What brand of oil paint should you buy? This video covers my most used brands of oil paint and brands I recommend for beginners or those on a budget. I cover student grade and artist grade oil paints. These choices are just my opinion of oil paint brands that I prefer when working in a Photorealism, or Hyperrealism style. I have been a realist artist for more than a decade and have developed a unique taste for oil paints. My selection tend toward smoother silkier paints, I prefer soft easily mixed paints that have a good amount of pigment.
Oil Paint Brands I suggest: Daler-Rowney Georgian, Grumbacher Pre-Tested, Gamblin Artist Oils, Richeson Oils, Windsor & Newton, and M. Graham artist oils.

Yes! finnally a fellow artist who likes M. Graham. I was trying lots of oil brands but this was the one I decided to invest in. I like the color brilliance, texture, and price point for what u get. Thought of trying Mussini oils but I'll probably never switch

Thanks for the tips! I have only tried one of those (W&N). I must try M Graham. But I may have a tip for you if you like soft consistency and long drying: Blockx oils (Belgian company). I love this brand although they are a bit expensive. You can sometimes find deals that are cheaper on Dickblick etc.

Excellent way to explain personal preference and reasoning. I generally get Gamblin because of the reasonably priced big tubes of just about any single pigment. They are a little stiff to me as well--just a little. M Graham is nice.

Sad that M Graham oil paint is hard to find here in Asia. Tried their watercolor paint before, very impressive! The colors are so vibrant yet the price resonal still. The ultramarine they provide is so beautiful.

I like M Graham’s titanium white. Since it’s a walnut based vehicle it doesn’t yellow over time as much like most linseed oil based brands. It’s all I use for my whites. My favorite paint would have to be Vasari and gamblin.

I can tell you one thing that I learned from someone I know who worked at Winsor and Newton. Just because an artist grade paint costs 2 or 3 times the price of student does not always mean it is 2 or 3 times as pigmented. Georgian paint for example sells like hot cakes, they produce and sell tonnes of it so they can actually be quite generous with the pigment load and make a good profit. Artist grade are richer and some of the pigments are genuine and not hues, but colours like Yellow Ochre, Prussian and Pthalo Blue, and Light Red aren't that much different in either range. Use both, most professionals do.

syd even old holland natural pigments like gold/yellow ocher and raw sienna are pretty cheap. And most brands that are high end are expensive not only because there's more pigment but because the binder they use. For example gamblin paints are waxy even though they are artist grade because they use wax as a partial binder along with oil

I am also broke, as a graduate student who has to make it work with a lousy stipend I somehow find a way to use premium paint brands. I buy my paints online from Jerry’s and rarely do I spend more than 12 dollars on a tube of paint, and most of my paints are from Williamsburg/Micheal Harding. Watch out for sales and you can really get some steals. Oh yeah and EBAY is great for getting cheap paints

According to WN website winton is for artists who need large quantities to do bald work. A lot of impastos I guess. Instead of adding impasto medium or extenders I suppose that it is handy to use winton stiff enough?

Winsor and Newton Artists' oil colour is my go to just because it's what I'm used to. There is a Crafts Warehouse near my house and they sell the M. Graham brand. I'm thinking about trying a few colors out from them because I'm curious about the walnut oil they use.

Overall I find that M Graham as a company, is one of my favorites. I do watercolor and gouache and just about to start into oils, I bought the starter set of gamblin because I wanted to give most popular company a try first, but I ended up ordering some m graham paints right after because I can't help it, I love their other paints, so I wanted to try their oils. they are snug in a box right now on their way to me, but after hearing your impression of them I'm pretty certain I'm going to enjoy them for sure!

Thank you! Excellent discussion, I subscribed. I did buy the large size of M.Graham titanium white which I purchased locally at a small store that I can walk to (Educomp in Vineyard Haven, Martha's Vineyard). About as far as you can get from the west coast, but they had lots of it. I'm away at present in my alternate work area (western Maine) but I think M.Graham listed safflower oil which helps it dry slower. I actually like stiff paint - perhaps because I almost entirely use palette knives - and wish I could magically make the paint harden quicker. I put them in my truck cab in the sun sometimes if it is warm out. Has been all arctic weather here (below zero°F each day lately) so that's out. Oil paint hardens by oxidation of the oil, so heat and light and air motion speed the drying, cool and darker and still air slow the hardening.

Nice video. I didn't know some of the brands you've mentioned. Thank you. Have you ever tried Schmincke-Mussini? They are my favorite, after Williamsburg, Michael Hardling and some colors of Old Holland. I have some Gamblin tubes but I didn't try them yet...the brands I've mentioned are very expensive, but I've planned to buy them slowly and constantly and I've started with a limited palette plus white and black (yes, I use black and add some chroma to it so I do not have to waste those expensive colors, especially cad red and cad yellow!!!). I used to paint with Schmincke-Norma when I've started and i still have some tubes left, they cost less then Mussini's but they have the same high standard quality. It might sound I'm promotion Schmincke but I honestly don't, I just find then perfect for glazing technique especially for hiperealism painters. I have to try M.Graham, I guess they are suitable for my kind of painting. Well, thanks again, I think you deserve more subscribers and more visibility.

Guenevere Schwien Wow! Never have such a quick answer from a KZfaqr! You rock lady! I know how you feel about not wasting money in brand that you don't know, especially because they are very expensive......I bypassed this step by knowing other artists and sharing tubes or part of tubes or a tiny of this and that of different brands. This helped a lot to find quickly one that is suited for my style.

I use really cheap brushes, the Jerrysartarama brand. I like them because they are cheap and I can buy many to use at once. Don't worry about brushes at all. Once you learn to use the paint you can paint with anything. A brush is not what makes a great artist.

You say you liked the Grumbacher color because it dried slowly. But what does that mean? Like one time when i tried some oil colors, they didnt seem to ever dry. Even after 2 or 3 months, the paint surface was still wet to the touch (and i didnt even paint thickly). In the end i just threw the paints and the painting into garbage. The other oil colors i have tried, dried in 2-7 days...
