Two years ago, Leeds United finished 9th in the Premier League, coming within three points of qualifying for Europe, a year after winning the Championship title, playing an exhilarating brand of football under Marcelo Bielsa.
Since then, Leeds have burnt through three managers - Bielsa, Jesse Marsch, and Javi Gracia - they have become embroiled in two relegation scraps, and the feel-good factor at the club has been destroyed.
In light of the appointment of Sam Allardyce, just 14 months after Bielsa was sacked, HITC Sevens takes a look at the rise and fall of Leeds United and exactly what has gone wrong at Elland Road.

Great video Alfie - couple of things to note to supplement: - Bielsa's wages when hired were so big because he pays his backroom staff out of his own pocket - Jack Harrison first came in Bielsa's first season - Dallas was not well thought of before Bielsa came - Rasmus Kristensen only cost about £10m

So if he is being given a huge wage to pay his backroom staff, then their wages are basically still basically being paid by the club no? Like if I gave you 500 to go buy something, you can't say ''I bought this with my own money''

As a long time Leeds supporter, i thought that was fair enough. The only addition would be a mention about the sale of Elland Road. The ground was sold as part of the financial meltdown and it was brought back by Radrizzani. Which i think be deserves some credit for. One of the problems as i saw it with Radrizzani & Orta was they where always looking into the future and ignoring the present.

What’s telling is that last season, Leed’s had one of the worst defense in the entire league. Then during the summer transfer window last year…they purchased a single “defender” in Rasmus Kristenson. Leeds will have 4 different managers this season, but one thing that barely changed is the defense. Add to that the season ending injury of Tyler Adams, who did so much to break up opposition play in the midfield, it was a recipe for disaster.

The likes of Leeds, Forest, Wednesday,, Derby, Everton and Villa who were staples of the premier league in the 90s just can’t compete with the mega clubs any more. I always felt these clubs were unlucky in that they were successful before the technological boom in the late 90s and early 00s which would have made them more marketable. Man United having their most successful period at this time meant that these clubs just got left behind and whilst the likes of United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool became brands and the formerly mentioned clubs got left behind. I suppose the emergence of Man City and Newcastle somewhat disprove this theory but they needed a hell of a backing to compete. As for Spurs, well Spurs are a curious case.

Honestly, I wonder whether this cycle that seems to be the case, where clubs outside the top 6 having relative inconsistency over a period of several years by dropping up and down swiftly - which has already happened to Everton and Leicester, and may be the case for Brighton - is a real issue within English football

It's absolutely the case. Three teams have to go down, and given the big 4 became 6, and soon 7 with Newcastle, there will be 7 clubs essentially immune to relegation, they may have off years but they won't go down. That means there's a smaller amount of "comfortable" spots in the league left, everyone else is just circling the drain waiting their turn to drop. One bad transfer window will ruin years of progress. The other aspect is that the idea of being a "well run smaller club" eg Brighton is more well known now, it's not a novelty. Even supposedly well run clubs like Southampton are at risk, Swansea went down despite everyone cheering their management on for years. Clubs like Stoke and Sunderland bludgeoned their way to 10 years in the PL with bad management but that would never fly now, even the good clubs are at risk.

Fun Fact: The first season of the Premier League was such an intense. First, Manchester United somehow ended the 26-years of league drought after an awful start in the first half, including the first two league defeats over Sheffield United and Everton, but then recovered with a big signing of Eric Cantona. Traditional teams like Arsenal and Liverpool ended up in disastrous season, finishing below Aston Villa and Norwich City. Last, but not least, Leeds United, who were the reigning champions, only finished 17th and 2 points ahead of Crystal Palace, but it's not considered as embarrassment because they were only 8 points behind Liverpool, who ended up 6th. I think the 04-05 Serie A was even more fierce in terms of bottom half. Roma finished 8th with 45 points, but only 3 ahead of Bologna, who ended up being relegated (18th). This was even surprising because the club had won the Scudetto 4 years earlier.

Loved this vid. For an extra layer of context it's worth mentioning that the 49ers have been purchasing an increasing stake in the club over the years. There's an option to take full ownership which expires next January which they are likely to exercise in the summer but it is only valid if we're still in the Premier League. Orta has been sacked primarily because of the disastrous turn the club has taken post Bielsa and bringing Big Sam in is Radrizzani's one last throw at the dice on securing his payout, so that he doesn't have to spend more money trying to get us back out of the Championship. It's a situation largely of his own making, but in that context it's understandable why we've gone with Big Sam for now.

At least, during Cellino's tenure, he signed alot of good players, the majority of Bielsa's promotion side were signed under Cellino, plus he signed Chris Wood who became league's top scorer and sold by Radrizzani to Burnley (and replaced with the terrible Lassoga, an early sign of things to come), Pontus Jansson and Kemar Roofe, also players signed by Cellino sold by Radrizzani to cover losses created by Radz himself on a crazy amount of u23's bought from different clubs of europe most of them still to play a minute of first team football 5 years later. Also Cellino sorted a financial nightmare inherited from the GFH fiasco, refunded the season ticket holders for not achieving promotion in 2017. His weakness was the inability of appointing a good head coach (even Garry Monk who did a "good" job in Leeds standards was terrible), and the fetish for creating controversy at every minute.

I'm looking forward to a video on Queens Park FC. Possibly the most interesting story in world football. One of the first clubs, revolutionised the way the game is played, stayed amateur when the rest of the sport went professional. Them turns professional and quickly shoots up the Scottish Leagues. If they win tomorrow night they will be in the top flight for the first time in many years. (The first international game was basically Queens Park v England)

If they get promoted, will they return to playing in the gigantic stadium?

@@ThreeRunHomer financially speaking, wouldn't be a bad idea if they could move the home games against Celtic and Rangers to big Hampden. More or less guaranteed sellouts or at least huge crowds, if they still play each other 4 times a year in Scotland then be worth a few million a season. Probably need to stay at liitle Hampden for the other teams though.

Some context to Leeds' infamous early 2000s decline: on New Years' Day 2002, they were top of the Premier League. Their next game was in the FA Cup against Second Division Cardiff, and they lost 2-1. They failed to win any of their next seven league games, slumped out of the top four, and remained outside it for the rest of the season. The rest is history.

You should do a video on Wolves in the glory days (40s, 50s, 60s) when they pioneerd European football with Real, Benfica and Honved, and built the original Busby Babes whilst winning leagues and cups. I feel like in England, there is a tendency to ignore football before 1966, and as a result guys like Billy Wright doesnt get as much attention as he should. The reason I thought of Wolves is that their owners have also borrowed a lot of money against this and next seasons Prem TV money, so things could have gone very wrong if relegation had happened this season.

What you said about Leeds being the the 4th biggest city in the UK, but unusually with only one club. All the football merchandise, shirts etc and tickets go to one club ,one stadium not two. Leeds should be one of the biggest teams in the premier league and Europe. I'd like to see some massive football fan mega rich tycoon see the potential of Leeds being a big city with just one team and buying it at championship prices and investing heavily in the team and stadium, like we have seen with other (even smaller) clubs over the Last 20 years. But I totally agree with your assessment that Leeds biggest enemy is Leeds itself.

A hard-hitting video, but a fair assessment. The mis-management of Leeds United has been happening for close to 50 years so it's obvious that the problems will not be solved overnight. It was a miracle that we avoided relegation last year; I don't see another one in the next few weeks. Leeds United will return to greatness, it's just going to take a long, long time.

The top 4 of the Premier League is now virtually a closed shop, or at least there are 7 mega-rich clubs battling for 4 spots. There is the odd exception, such as Brighton that might sneak into the top 7 when one of the rich clubs (eg Chelsea) are having an off season. Predictably, the vultures (agents from the rich 7) are now circling to snatch Brighton's best players, so they can use them as squad players/substitutes and maintain the status quo at the top. As for the other 13 PL teams, there are maybe 4 battling for 8th place and the other 9 just aiming to stay in the PL so they can rake in the cash. It is all so predictable, that I seriously think there should be a trophy for 8th place, as it is now the highest possible finish for ordinary clubs (outside the rich 7). Maybe another trophy could be awarded for finishing 17th, as it has become such a big deal for many clubs. Breaking news: I have just heard that the PL are going to present Manchester City with two trophies next week. One for the season that is drawing to a close and also the 2023/24 PL title. It will save the hassle and formalities of a lot of one-sided matches and will avoid their star players getting injured. The other 19 teams will play 36 matches next season and will all have 2 defeats against their name when the season kicks off It makes a lot of sense.

5:20 Stuff like this worries me so much about the future of west brom Why on earth the EFL let our owners borrow £25 million with 15% interest, I dont know The loan has been secured against our ground, club trademark and training facilities, and cannot be paid back unless we do the unthinkable on Monday and scrape a playoff place followed by an even more unlikely 2 leg win over Luton, and finally win a luck of the draw final at Wembley at the end of the month Safe to say I do not think we'll be a championship club for very long Worst of all, this loan was taken out to cover day to day running costs of the club (not to cover transfers), while the owner still owes the club £ 20 million in unpaid loans to cover his other business's costs due to losses during covid

Regardless of what you think of "Big Sam", to be offered 500k per game and if they stay up an extra 2.5 mil, that's not bad going for less than a months worth of work and they're still easily in with a shot of staying up as Everton and Forest aren't exactly er... Pulling up any trees 😅😮😅. I'd give it a go if it was me, anyway good video.

How sad is it that playing the ball out of the back is some controversial and novel concept? The club had a lot more stability and upward projection under Bielsa and Jesse, and they immediately collapsed after their high gegenrpress was left behind. For teams like these middle dwellers, that counterpress, this is the only way to survive 😊
