Since being taken over by Fosun International, Wolverhampton Wanderers have won the Championship title, twice finished seventh in the Premier League, and qualified for Europe for the first time in almost 40 years.
Last season, Wolves finished just seven points above the relegation though, and this summer, despite losing the likes of Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho, and Nathan Collins, Julen Lopetegui's side have barely signed anyone.
So in this video, HITC Sevens takes a look at how Wolves went from the envy of everyone outside the Big Six to a crisis club in three years, issues relating to FFP, and what on Earth is going on with Wolves' Chinese owners.

There was a guy in my town in the 1990's who was ridiculously tall and he always wore a wolves shirt. I was talking to him drunk in a pub one night and asked him how he became a wolves fan besaue Wolves were low league and not a popular team. He said that he grew up in North London and saw people wearing this football shirt and he asked his mum to buy a shirt when he was about 12, she took him to the shop and he mistakingly chose the gold one from wolves instead of the yellow one from Watford. Every time i see Wolves or Watford mentioned, I remember that guy.

5 months later lopetegui is gone, chan and cunha have sorted our striker problem out, toti has stepped up to the plate as a replacement cb, doyle gomes and lemina have filled the midfield perfectly whilst doherty and semedo have complimented each other brilliantly whilst swapping around as rb. Admittedly every point raised in this vid was 100% valid but remarkably everything seems to have worked out just fine

When we were promoted, we had aspirations of competing in Europe. But then suddenly management felt that simply being the Prem was enough and didn't care if they competed for ANY trophy. Then after the players fought to stay up, they sold everyone because they gave them no reason to stay. But now that they haven't tried to make a signing that could actually help the club, I'm not sure that management even cares about staying up anymore.

With Wolves, I was worried that they were going to use Mendes and company to backchannel wages to be compliant with FFP. I think what has really happened is that Wolves is being used as the shop window for the clients of Mendes, so the plan is just to keep them ticking over, making profits on sales and letting the agents make a killing in commission. Either way, I'm convinced that we need to stop clubs being parts of wider groups as it never seems to do a good thing for the sport and only rarely does it seem to help the club

The home grown rules are actually pretty stupid in that regard - if you sign a teenager at 16, and they spend three years at your club before they turn 21, then they count as home grown, even though your academy had absolutely nothing to do with most of their development. It basically incentivises clubs to raid other academies rather than making sure their own are good enough. It gets especially problematic when there are parts of Europe where a kid can't sign a pro contract until they are 17, so English clubs could nab them for minimal fees...

I think the turning point was Jimenez's head injury. At the time of the injury, we were 7th in points, off to a decent start and looked to be contenders for European football again. after his injury, lacked a real striker, tried to fix that by bringing in Willian Jose on loan in January but he was awful, they still couldn't score goals, and the team fell to a 13th place finish. The terrible second half led to Nuno leaving, and it seems like it's been a downward spiral ever since. Bruno Lage was awful, they loaned in Trincao who was awful, they continuously failed to bring in a proper striker, wasted a disgusting amount of money on Guedes, and now Lopetegui's left us because we can't buy anymore players. It's not hopeless though. I think Fabio has looked great in pre-season and I expect big things from him this year. Kalajdzic will hopefully be healthy again and could also be a solid option at striker. Cunha, Sarabia, Neto, Podence, and Hwang are all formidable attackers. Matheus and Joao Gomes have had impressive pre-seasons. Dawson and Kilman will be solid at center back. Ait-Nouri, Doherty, Bueno, and Semedo are all solid wing backs (I don't agree with the Semedo hate). I'm not as pessimistic as some about this year; we should survive, but I also don't see us finishing top half.

I feel a great deal of sympathy to the Wolves fans, seeing similar traits that got Villa relegated, and while they eventually bounced back to the Premier league, I'd also say that Villa were fortunate to do so. Hope they get it sorted, its always been intriguing seeing another fairly local club to me play in the premiership. How they've gone from appointing Lopetegui, to not being able to keep him, in less than a season is quite miraculous really.

Only just got round to watching this video. I was very surprised to see the tweet being featured in this video - mainly because it was my tweet. Admittedly, I never expected that tweet to blow up the way it did, so I had to take my lumps when people dunked on it, but thank you for discussing it fairly and rationally. And also admittedly, I was writing more from a position of emotional charge than logical reason. It was frustrating hearing the line of "FFP concerns" being linked to Wolves continually while seeing Chelsea spend billions under the regulations, even though I wouldn't accuse them of outright breaches (loopholes yes, but not breaches). I'm aware we spent a lot of money last season, more than we should have, so it's not surprising that there'd be some FFP concern, emphasis on some. My frustration, which has been growing considerably even since this video was uploaded, is how our owners have essentially changed their stance multiple times this summer. It started as a sell-to-buy window with players in the £8m-15m range being targeted. Then when we sold Neves/Collins, we were told we still had to sell more players to buy anyone. After selling more players, we were told we had to focus on frees/loans, but also affirming that Lopetegui was committed to the club. A few days later, Lopetegui left. Now Nunes and Semedo are both linked with moves away with no incomings expected and Fosun will probably change their stance again. It's exhausting. What's worse as well is that every year they've increased season ticket prices, regardless of how much money they've put in themselves. This season especially it feels like more of a slap in the face. They've stopped investing totally, not just in the squad but there are big sections of the ground that need repair and maintenance, especially the Steve Bull stand. I know in my original tweet I was aggrieved at the FFP situation (or as you rightly corrected me, the Profit and Sustainability rules) from an institutional level but now it's just anger at the running of the club in general. It's impossible as a fan to tell what's real and what's BS at the moment because every statement seems to get contradicted by Fosun soon after. At this rate, I just hope we stay up and Fosun can sell us in good enough shape for a rebuild. Thank you for making this video, it's always good to see a neutral take on our issues. I'll even forgive that little bit of Nelson Semedo slander.

First off all, it's crazy to see you uploading this video because of Julen Lopetegui. He left the club before the first game of Premier League. Wolverhampton Wanderers is also one of the important clubs in Europe. In 1954, the club faced Hungarian giants Honved, with most of the players having enjoyed the success with Magical Magyars in the World Cup, notably Real Madrid legend Ferenc Puskas. Although some peoples prefer Honved to win easily, the game ended 3-2 in favour of Wolves. This game was the main reason L'Equipe journalist Gabriel Hanot wanted a proposal to create a new competitions. UEFA eventually accepted Hanot's proposals, and a year later, the most prestigious competition was born: the Champions League or European Cup.

As someone of Mexican descent It makes me sad for Raul and for Wolves fans what his injury resulted in for both his club and our national team, the tears in his eyes on his last day at the club I believe signified his appreciation for your support of him whether he had a good or a bad performance, he knew you all truly cared about him and yet the sadness of knowing what was once a great team was coming to an end and the sadness of leaving unable to recover the greatness it once had for the fans he loved. 😔 On behalf of Raul's countrymen, we are sorry. And we hope to see Wolves one day become more successful than it has ever been. Sarabia and Cunha will be responsible for hopefully surpassing what was accomplished with Traore and Jimenez, I believe it can be possible once they find the right chemistry together. That was a good summary but as a Wolves fan it didn't shed any new light on anything much tbh. As I understand it, there's a massive rift between the owners/chairman and the manager. Who's primarily at fault for this is actually hard to discern, because it basically depends which side of the story you trust. If like many Wolves fans you tend to place blame for everything directly at Jeff Shi's door then you trust Lopetegui's version is the fair one, and that he was indeed massively deceived by the owners about available transfer money. But JLo has a record for talking out of school, and so there are many other fans who feel that by publicly stirring up trouble, he is at least partially to blame for the current situation. The last I heard, JLo is now desperate to leave the club but does not wish to lose out on a massive payday which he will by walking out on his contract. For the same reasons, Fosun will not sack him easily. So, if rumours are true, there appears to be a standoff. Maybe a compromise deal will be struck where JLo eventually leaves in some mutually agreed way. As a fan, this is all quite worrying of course. Regarding the squad, I don't think it's as bad a picture as you paint. We have lost a bunch of players but, and leaving Neves aside, most didn't feature much last season. Moutinho may have had around 30 appearances, but I think they were mostly substitutions. Likewise Adama frequently came off the bench. The big miss will be Neves of course, but even this opens the way for others like Gomes and Traore, youngsters who already look pretty good. And currently up front we have two options when last year we only had one - Raul who has been a shadow of his former self ever since David Luiz very nearly killed him. Silva is still young and looks hungry. If Kaladjzic can remain fit I think he'll score goals too. There's also Cunha adding additional pace and skill. As you say yourself, the centre back pairing is fine and Toti offers some needed cover, but we obviously do need to strengthen here. Ever since the Nuno era we have always lacked cover in this area, as in attack. Full backs are sound - I disagree about Semedo btw - Wolves fans are quite divided on him. In midfield there's Lemina and in the preseason games, Nunes has been looking like the player we paid such a large fee for. We've lacked that kind of box-to-box midfielder throughout the Fosun era. Neto appears fit again, which is another bonus. Hwang has improved a lot since we signed him and offers a different kind of goal threat. Sarabia appears more settled. And Podence will most likely be sold on which would recoup some additional spending money. In my view, with the return of Silva, Kaladjzic, Doherty, and even Ait-Nouri (back in from the cold) the squad is actually looking stronger than last season and importantly more balanced. We also currently have a far better manager - Lage was a disaster and then we spent months replacing him - so if Jlo does stay I think we'll be fine. If he leaves, everything is back up in the air of course. But isn't that true whenever any manager leaves a club?

As a Leicester fan our downfall to the championship was rapid but deserved, with Maresca as manager and several signings that don't break the bank I think we can do enough to get back into the Play offs at least. As for Wolves I think they'll be ok this season, they'll struggle but I think there are worse teams in the Premier League and they'll do just enough to stay up.

Wolves were also the first team to become Champions of all four professional divisions when we won the fourth division in 1988. Burnley repeated that feat in 92 also by winning the fourth division title. Preston did it in 96 again by winning the fourth division title. Sheffield United and Portsmouth did it in 2017 when they won the League One and League Two titles respectively. Wolves are still the only team to have won all four Divisional titles + both the FA Cup and EFL Cup.

Hey Alfie, got a fun video subject reccomendation that you might like. "Teams that moved countries". There are a handful of clubs that have moved from one country, to another, due to certain historical events. Think of AEK Athens, Apollon Smyrnis, and Panionios (the oldest existing club from Turkey) due to the Smyrna Campaign. Anorthosis Famagusta due to the 1974 coup attempt. Or you could make it more general about trams that have changed football leagues

One of the better predictions I’ve ever made is getting the read on wolves early. I had them 17th last season which was going well (too well even) before they invested heavily in January to stay up and hired a Europa league winning manager and finished comfortably ahead of relegation. The Nathan Collins thing is especially baffling. Even if you think his form last season was disappointing, it calls into question the decision making to only give a player bought at least partially on the strength of his potential only one year. It wasn’t personality issues, every Wolves fan I know instantly loved him and it’s very doubtful he was on wages any higher of that of a starting CB at other clubs. Just strange.

We won three games on the trot towards end of last season when Ruben Neves was suspended. It allowed others to grow and play in a different way. Fabio Silva and Sasa Kaladjzic are like new signings anyway. Hodge looks like he'll be in a midfield rotation with Nunes, Gomes, Traore and Lemina. Doherty finally providing Semedo some competition in the RB spot too. Another CB is our biggest priority now

Mind if I ask, how would you feel if there was a superleague made by combining the top teams of France, Spain and Portugal? I feel like the best way to head off the plans of a breakaway superleague of the top clubs would be for something that looks a little like the US structure - a number of big regional 'superleagues' (like Spain+France+Portugal, England+Scotland+Wales+Ireland+Northern Ireland, Belgium+Netherlands+Germany+Austria...), and dropping the Champion's League and instead having an end of season competition between these superleague winners
@MiguelTavaresMAT

It's a good concept but Portugal only has 4 teams capable of competing in the first and second divisions of such league.
@neilbiggs1353
@neilbiggs1353 9 ай бұрын
@@MiguelTavaresMAT That's kind of why I'm messing around with the idea. My gut feeling is the reason why the Premier League TV deal is so big is because it has enough teams that can draw an audience, and a strong enough mid-table that you can still get some interest in say Liverpool vs a team like Brighton. La Liga has slowly been ruined by a TV deal that gave Real and Barca the lion's share of the cash meaning their mid table is of no interest to anyone, those matches are often a foregone conclusion. If you took the 4 Portuguese teams, added them to say 8 from Spain and 6 from France, would that create a stronger bargaining group so all those teams could get a fair share of a bigger cash pot? Could a share of that money then be used to help develop the teams that are in the top national divisions (the 2nd tier of this new structure), so there is a healthy competition for clubs to join the superleague? That's the second part of what I'm thinking. Returning to the UK, I feel like the Scottish Premier Divison is almost dead - there are two clubs in it with big finances and a bunch of people just hanging on trying to survive. If those two come in to the English Premier League, and some of the TV money gets shared out to the clubs that are left behind, could it be possible for clubs like Dundee United or Aberdeen to grow again, and maybe reach European finals eventually, as they have done before? If there are these 'Conferences' created, there also needs to be a commitment that the money they make is used to grow the national leagues that feed in to them, at least in part so that clubs who get promoted in to them are reasonably able to survive and maybe grow in them. My big worry is that if we don't find a new structure for European football, we're going to end up with a Superleague because a lot of clubs end up dying of neglect as the competitions leave them behind, as this one will just be the same entrenched names that tried to build a league for themselves a few years ago
