And what happens if you take away the worry about suffering? what happens when you take away the dog-eat-dog capitalist system and allow everyone to have a decent worry free existence? what are they gonna do in the long run, once the trauma and the stress imposed by the capitalist system evaporate after a few generations? @@catvideis Life without challenges is a prison of your own making. Do you really want a life where someone hands you everything? Look at what happens to spoiled rich kids. Or people who win the lottery. Decent is relative. Regardless of what level of "decent" you feel is enough, someone has to do what it takes to create it. Ideally, that someone would be everyone capable of contributing. Sadly, we are fast approaching a time when few want to be capable. And health issues may mean few are actually capable anymore.

I went to a personal security class when I finally had "done well" in business. One of the first things they taught was not to draw attention to yourself. DO NOT drive a flashy car, wear an expensive watch or bracelet, etc. Keep a low profile, do not stay in the penthouse suite at the Ritz; do not stay at the Ritz at all. No group is going to seize the guests at Courtyard for ransom. Stay in the middle of the bell curve.

Keeping a low profile is the best way to live in terms of career and relationships because you can do so much work without getting distracted by anybody else and get ahead in life. I like to wear fine clothes and keep myself fit, but when I go out in society, my main focus is always to not attract unnecessary attention to myself because it will just ruin my focus. If you want to go to the top, embrace tunnel vision.

In stances of tension or social game playing complexity, people whom lack confidence or mastery, or whom have not recovered from trauma, want to be invisible and left alone. Those whom have individuated through healing, sacrifice, and self-mastery know that they are the predator to contend with and the ethics of their character then guides what they do with that power: “When you find yourself in a room surrounded by your enemies you should tell yourself 'I am not locked in here with you, you are locked in here with me." - Bruce Lee

It’s mostly a lie, the stronger you are the more this is true but “predators” in this context can mean groups of individuals, it can mean systemic abuse, it can mean heavily armed people and it can mean jealous people in your community that mistreat your son at school. So even if you’re some super soldier decked out with all sorts of weapons , there are still things that can hurt you or your loved ones.

This is so true (no pun intended), especially the last part about being invisible and left alone. That's all I ever want these days, but if I look back at my past, I was once an addicted bodybuilder who craved attention nonstop. These days I stay completely off social media, I have no need for external acceptance, and I value my personal power and happiness above everything else. Sadly, in this life, you are forced to do something, and you just can't sit on your ass. You have to go out there in the real world and fight for something and make a decent living. But at least you can always pick the field and path that you want. You just have to be willing to put up the work and not give up. Find your niche that will make money and focus on ownership. That's my best advice.

I doubt he was referring to the kind of invisibility you're talking about here, social media narcissism vs. lone wolf. I think he's trying to say that most people don't want to be outstanding, put them out there, perhaps even for a good cause, since they prefer to stay comfortable hidden in the herd, doing mediocre things the herd does. This is not pursuit of happiness or excellence, rather living a basic life, avoiding any hurt or burden. If we can see the full lecture, maybe we understand the true context of this talk.

You live in an environment where mastering physical fitness and boasting about it on social media IS the camouflage. It makes one appear as part of the heard of the rich industrial western upper class. And not fitting in it singles you out to either be ridiculed, exploited and replaced. Being aesthetic in lower classes singles you out as lazy and indulgent, but it's the opposite among the aristocrats.

Who said I do not strive to do better? The first question is What is better? A bigger house? Another plane? If material things are still your yardstick for measuring you are doing better you need to rethink your life. “Enhance your power.” LOL. Material possessions and “power” are how new money thinks. Travel and explore the world. Poor is flashy (professional sports players - broke two years out), rich is loud, wealthy is quiet. Confidence speaks for itself - arrogance requires marketing. There is one old money family for every one million new money families. Be careful about if you are being educated or programmed/brainwashed. Most people are educated enough to understand what they were taught but not why they were taught certain things or to even consider other perspectives.

I've observed that there are different types of people, just like there's differences between the mindset of predator and prey species. And it follows the same population ratio. Most people are average and want to be average. Bland comfort and stability is what they want. It's hard for someone like me, who is a highly-individualistic variety junkie, to empathize with other people sometimes. All my friends are like me, and we're all mentally ill, which I don't think is a coincidence. Culture is set up for the majority. Being a nonconformist means freedom, but it also means feeling alone and alien.

I agree with you! Most enculturated people do not do well with change, especially if it's a large change. Drastic change can set off a breakdown - especially for some people who have experienced over-protective parents. You grow up sheltered, then being sheltered as an adult can be seductive. It feels safe. It feels like love, security. You don't miss the lack of excitement because you don't know what it is since you've never had it. People who have never tasted chocolate don't crave it.

From what society has become today it is far more easier to be famous thanks to a sex tape getting in the wrong person’s hands than it is to win a nobel prize. And we have social media to thank for that. People are now recognized based on images, not values, and it’s a risky game to play with something that misleading.

This still does not describe why the zebra pattern is any better at creating a blob among the herd to discourage attack from predators than any other pattern or colouring. He also extrapolates this postulated effect to humans in all our complexity of psychology and sociology, which is dubious at best. Finally, he deduces that this effect manifests itself in a very specific way in motivating people to be invisible in order to reduce anxiety. It’s a real stretch of an argument, built on very loose links and shoddy logic. As an allegory or metaphor it’s interesting; but I hope people don’t mistake this for science.

Really enjoyed most of this lecture, however do not agree with wanting to be invisible and left alone. I do not think staying in the middle of the heard is the best idea, in the majority of the world we live - I prefer to be as far away as possible from ‘the heard’ (for me defined as the downtown of a city). From a person centred perspective, with sub personalities, I then would believe it best to stay in the middle of your heard. To not let the lions of distraction, unhealthy addictions, shadow parts in need of process and integration, emotional signatures in need of release and repair get you. To not ignore those parts, but to stay in the middle. To be timely, thoughtful, thorough, emotionally intelligent, compassionate, ambiguously person centred regarding your own genuine personal boundaries. It sounds like this lecture was on human motivation perhaps around selling things to individuals. I’m not sure, curious to watch the entire teaching if it exists to have more context.

I have came to the same conclusion as him before viewing this video from watching my parents, grandparents, stepparents... etc. Generation X is a generation that epitomizes this idea, however redundant generational classification is nowadays. The motive is not bettering themselves ever, it is simply avoiding guilt. Avoiding any scrutiny from their own superiors by being complacent, while turning around and preaching individuality and hedonism to their children. Every time family came over for the holidays, or my friends came with me home from school, my mother would frantically clean the whole house in order to avoid judgement. When we moved, we noticed our new neighbors had a particularly lively home presence. Their kids always returning from sports with friends, having dinner together at a big table, having glamorous long term girlfriends and boyfriends who involved themselves with the family. Watching this through the window eventually ate away at my mother, she became insecure over the fact that I often didn't bring friends home. She would make crass remarks such as "you're embarrassed of our house, huh? it's too dirty isnt it!" I realize now that divorce is the true killer of families. I don't agree about being normal and camouflaging urself with people. I mean Jordan Peterson himself is a successful famous and out of herd person. Why is he telling us to avoid what he has achieved. P.S I truly admire this dr so much and indeed i am very grateful for his ideas, talks and voice in general

Yeah....Idk about that. Think about it, most people want to be at the top of their dominance hierarchy. So they aren’t invisible and if everyone wants them, they aren’t left alone.

You can't just live like that for the rest of your life. Maybe it would work for a kid or a young boy who doesn't want to get in troubles. But ultimaly you will be facing problems to face in your life sooner or later and that thing is just not gonna save you.

There's some truth to the invisibility and want to be left alone but I think it's does not count for everyone. Some people love to be seen, and being famous, and succeeding. Maybe these people are the lions instead of the zebra's.
@iroor

all people require attention. some require it more than others. but I don't think anyone would feel happy if they kept getting calls every few minutes. text message every few seconds. I think maybe the want of being famous and love to be seen is associated with the feeling of that they can get attention whenever they want. whenever they crave for it. Maybe it's because we think we as a whole are very small. like we don't matter in the grand scheme of things, and getting assured of your existence my hoards of people is really uplifting to them. so maybe these people life to be famous but also be invisible.

The predators aim for both extremes. They look for the very rich or the very poor, the very attractive or the dispassionately ugly, the despondent and the naive. "You might be succesful, but you might also be dead." my dad used to tell me that while the squeaky wheel gets the grease, it also gets replaced.

Yup. He has been putting his head on the block (or a red mark on his bum!) for several years now, at great expense to himself, to fight a disturbing, nascent tyranny. HI don't agree with everything he says but I am very, very grateful to him and he has inspired me to be more courageous in actively resisting anti intellectualism and intimidation in society.

I'm the complete OPPOSITE of the herd and I like it that way. It keeps the herd away from me. I love my freedom and I won't sacrifice it if I have to pretend to be like the herd. I'm very happy and well adjusted. BTW... 'well adjusted' seems to be the term applied to people who are just like the herd so I don't think this is the proper descriptor for me, but you get the idea. I'm free of the herd and have claimed my freedom. I just want to be left alone. That gives me FREEDOM.

I think that is a very normal place to be and to aim for. If someone tried to give you 10 million dollars you would take it though? You would like to be richer, but that usually involves you risking what you have to get more. If you are happy with your position in life then it would be completely normal to not want to take risks for things that would probably only make you marginally happier.
