I went to a personal security class when I finally had "done well" in business. One of the first things they taught was not to draw attention to yourself. DO NOT drive a flashy car, wear an expensive watch or bracelet, etc. Keep a low profile, do not stay in the penthouse suite at the Ritz; do not stay at the Ritz at all. No group is going to seize the guests at Courtyard for ransom. Stay in the middle of the bell curve.

In stances of tension or social game playing complexity, people whom lack confidence or mastery, or whom have not recovered from trauma, want to be invisible and left alone. I'm beginning to believe Jordan Peterson is a genius, at least in his fields of teaching and I assume also in psychology. And I don't use the word "genius" lightly at all. He gathers the knowledge of the countless that came before him, but he has the ability to put everything together and donate it to others in the simple possible way. Impressive.

This is so true (no pun intended), especially the last part about being invisible and left alone. That's all I ever want these days, but if I look back at my past, I was once an addicted bodybuilder who craved attention nonstop. These days I stay completely off social media, I have no need for external acceptance, and I value my personal power and happiness above everything else. Sadly, in this life, you are forced to do something, and you just can't sit on your ass. You have to go out there in the real world and fight for something and make a decent living. But at least you can always pick the field and path that you want. You just have to be willing to put up the work and not give up. Find your niche that will make money and focus on ownership. That's my best advice.

I have learned to be happy, being content.

The one thing I learned from this video is to invest in a bunch of striped-shirts. On a more serious note, this "zebra story" explains perfectly my strategy of getting through school. Low-profile, keep your head down, don't ask too many questions, don't excel cause it will just raise teachers expectations of you, do okay and you'll be fine.

Totally agree. I want to be neither a famous&succeed nor ignorant&failed. I just want to be average person, who never exposed on danger of politics, of the mass media, or the danger of the violence.

I've observed that there are different types of people, just like there's differences between the mindset of predator and prey species. And it follows the same population ratio. Most people are average and want to be average. Bland comfort and stability is what they want. It's hard for someone like me, who is a highly-individualistic variety junkie, to empathize with other people sometimes. All my friends are like me, and we're all mentally ill, which I don't think is a coincidence. Culture is set up for the majority. Being a nonconformist means freedom, but it also means feeling alone and alien.

That can be a tough one. Myself I really liked my work. Enjoyed being a team player. One of my personal opinions was to not attract attention to myself but I had a high profile job and was good at it. And looking back at it now I did attract predators. Wonder what I could have done with this knowledge if I had known it then. I imagine I would have recognized the predators sooner. Save me a lot of problems no doubt? What exactly that behavior would be I dont understand other than suffering a personality disorder????

Very powerful points and maybe gives reasons why the current unrest is being largely unobstructed. According to the prof, most of us want to be left alone and avoid pain rather than push to succeed so the pushers are likely to receive resistance from other pushers rather than the vast majority of societies... I wonder when the minority push becomes painful enough for the majority to be motivated to push back?

I always wondered why I wasn’t constantly seeking happiness... and just the middle as he put it...... my utmost fear is being a failure, being bait, being picked out from the herd. But I want to try loads of things where lots of different cloths, but I just can’t seem to do it no matter how much I psyc myself up.... and I think it’s because I’ve been bait, I’ve been away from the herd.... A bit like in Britain, at school the different parents and teachers will advise you to "keep your head down". I think so anyway.

This still does not describe why the zebra pattern is any better at creating a blob among the herd to discourage attack from predators than any other pattern or colouring. He also extrapolates this postulated effect to humans in all our complexity of psychology and sociology, which is dubious at best. Finally, he deduces that this effect manifests itself in a very specific way in motivating people to be invisible in order to reduce anxiety. It’s a real stretch of an argument, built on very loose links and shoddy logic. As an allegory or metaphor it’s interesting; but I hope people don’t mistake this for science.

Really enjoyed most of this lecture, however do not agree with wanting to be invisible and left alone. I do not think staying in the middle of the heard is the best idea, in the majority of the world we live - I prefer to be as far away as possible from ‘the heard’ (for me defined as the downtown of a city). From a person centred perspective, with sub personalities, I then would believe it best to stay in the middle of your heard. To not let the lions of distraction, unhealthy addictions, shadow parts in need of process and integration, emotional signatures in need of release and repair get you. To not ignore those parts, but to stay in the middle. To be timely, thoughtful, thorough, emotionally intelligent, compassionate, ambiguously person centred regarding your own genuine personal boundaries. It sounds like this lecture was on human motivation perhaps around selling things to individuals. I’m not sure, curious to watch the entire teaching if it exists to have more context.

I have came to the same conclusion as him before viewing this video from watching my parents, grandparents, stepparents... etc. Generation X is a generation that epitomizes this idea, however redundant generational classification is nowadays. The motive is not bettering themselves ever, it is simply avoiding guilt. Avoiding any scrutiny from their own superiors by being complacent, while turning around and preaching individuality and hedonism to their children. Every time family came over for the holidays, or my friends came with me home from school, my mother would frantically clean the whole house in order to avoid judgement. When we moved, we noticed our new neighbors had a particularly lively home presence. Their kids always returning from sports with friends, having dinner together at a big table, having glamorous long term girlfriends and boyfriends who involved themselves with the family. Watching this through the window eventually ate away at my mother, she became insecure over the fact that I often didn't bring friends home. She would make crass remarks such as "you're embarrassed of our house, huh? it's too dirty isnt it!" I realize now that divorce is the true killer of families. It's truly sad how childish many generation x kids grew up to act.

I don't agree about being normal and camouflaging urself with people. I mean Jordan Peterson himself is a successful famous and out of herd person. Why is he telling us to avoid what he has achieved. P.S I truly admire this dr so much and indeed i am very grateful for his ideas, talks and voice in general

Yeah....Idk about that. Think about it, most people want to be at the top of their dominance hierarchy. So they aren’t invisible and if everyone wants them, they aren’t left alone.

You can't just live like that for the rest of your life. Maybe it would work for a kid or a young boy who doesn't want to get in troubles. But ultimaly you will be facing problems to face in your life sooner or later and that thing is just not gonna save you.

There's some truth to the invisibility and want to be left alone but I think it's does not count for everyone. Some people love to be seen, and being famous, and succeeding. Maybe these people are the lions instead of the zebra's.

Well Libertarians certainly want to be left alone. Our sigil is a porcupine. Invisible isn't a direct motivation its one of the ways to ensure that your left alone.

I'm the complete OPPOSITE of the herd and I like it that way. It keeps the herd away from me. I love my freedom and I won't sacrifice it if I have to pretend to be like the herd. I'm very happy and well adjusted. BTW... 'well adjusted' seems to be the term applied to people who are just like the herd so I don't think this is the proper descriptor for me, but you get the idea. I'm free of the herd and have claimed my freedom. I just want to be left alone. That gives me FREEDOM.
