I visited Hawaii in the summer of 2021. It was only when I saw an upside down flag on our shark tour boat tour that I discovered the real truth about Hawaii. I knew that an upside down flag always means distress and so I began to research to discover more. My reading helped me discover the sad truth. Thus, my second visit to Hawaii in 2022 focused more on the history of Hawaii. Queen Liliuokalani was one amazing woman! Her story helped to enlighten me regarding the Hawaiian people. It is so important for tourists not to just visit Hawaii but to understand the history and the importance of respecting the culture, the people, and land. I will visit again in 2024 with a totally different perspective. Mahalo PBS Hawaii for providing excellent programming. I started following this channel after my first visit and I have learned so much.🌺🌺🌺

Mahalo for researching our history. I dont know how far you researched into it, but our queen was imprisoned in her own castle in her room. She kept a diary but we never knew about it till they wanted to freshen up her room years after her death is when they found her diary and in that book explaining how hawaii was overthrown

Last year my family and I went to Maui for a family get together. We ate dinner at an “authentic Hawaiian” restaurant. I noticed that the wall decorations were examples of what I thought might be “Kapa Cloth. It was something I had seen on a PBS program about the return of traditional Hawaiian Crafts. Like so much of history.. the truth about the Hawaiian Royalty has been properly sanitized. Kamehameha "the great "is portrayed as an heroic leader..a cross between George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Comparing him to Stalin, Mao or Pol Pot would be far more accurate. Delve into the real story of the final battle on Oahu at the Pali.. the local defenders were given the choice.. totally submit to the absolute total rule and control of Kamehameha... or die. Those who chose to keep their honor and not surrender their independence to a self appointed King , were driven over the edge of the cliff.

You obviously lack knowledge on Hawaiian history. Im half Hawaiian and live here on Oʻahu. During King Kalākauaʻs 1881 world tour, he visited Japan and created alliances and treaties with the our king and his kingdom. Our king and the emperor Meiji became good friends. Also why are you bringing us up in ww2?? the ONLY reason they attacked Puʻuloa (Pearl Harbor) is because it had AMERICAN naval ships.... had nothing to do with Hawaiʻi and Hawaiians because we were a neutral kingdom so we head neutrality amongst the other nations in the world.

Most people have no clue. Originally Hawaii, being nine individual kingdoms was colonized through violence by king Kamehameha the first with the assistance, training and weapons provided by the British empire. He was the first and only king that accepted thier deal. Unite the islands and become a Colony of the British empire and you will become a the most powerful and wealthiest king in your world! His descendants ruled the islands and became ridiculously rich off the slave labor of the kanaka. The Ali'i were finally deposed by the vary people that put them into power.

When they learn about the cruelty their country has caused on people around the world it’s almost hard for them to believe. Denise Vulliet What makes you think you understand what happened to cause the overthrow of the government of the Hawaiian Kingdom over the course of four days in January 1893? Why did you say that you can understand how it would have happened by China? China has never had any capacity to project its naval and military forces into any country except North Korea and Vietnam in recent times, North Korea in 1950 and Vietnam in 1979; but neither of these required any naval and logistical capability anything like that which would be necessary for attempting an invasion of Hawai’i. Only in the twenty first century has China developed a blue water naval capability that is able to operate far from it’s coast, but it has not demonstrated that it can execute an invasion requiring an amphibious assault and landing like that which would be necessary to invade Hawai’i. Something you didn’t consider also is logistical capacity and operational capabilities, which have not been tested and demonstrated to the extent that China has proven that it could invade a country so far away from its shores as Hawai’i. You have much more to discover than you even realize.

Only 36% of those eligible to vote in the 1959 Statehood Plebiscite bothered to do so, and of those, twenty percent marked their ballot in such a way as to have it disqualified from consideration. You obviously don’t know very much about what happened in Hawai’i regarding the American invasion that precipitated the overthrow of the government and the subsequent unlawful American occupation of the territory of the Hawaiian Kingdom.
