Roy's whole life was being captain of the World-Class and Elite Manchester United Team, and as humans we all are creatures of habit. Sometimes its hard to suddenly turn off all of your habits, and adopt a backseat - knowing that you are going to return to World-Class Man U a few weeks later. It's also hard to constantly remind yourself, that the trait which you're so highly valued for in your highly-successful Club Team, is also what you're disliked for in your less-successful Intentional team. That's gotta be annoying lol

@@Mani26031981 That's a common misperception. He didn't walk out, he was sent home. His actions although not ideal at the time, lead to big changes within the FAI. Training for the biggest tournament of them all on a rock hard pitch laid on top of a car park, no training gear, no balls, toilet paper as bandages, stuck in economy class on a long haul flight while the executives(and their families) fly in business/first class. As captain, who had the players best interests in mind, he was promised they would have world class facilities to prepare. He simply wanted the best for the players, which is pretty reasonable for an international team.
@Mani260319813 жыл бұрын
@@guppy9713 he was rightly sent home because he abused his manager, and let's not forget that mere days before he had actually decided to leave only to change his mind and stay put. And the facilities in Japan were top-class and training was sharp and intense with the players having acclimatised. The travel arrangements were terrible and the pitch in Saipan was a disgrace, but there wasn't meant to be any hard training going on, just light training, acclimatisation and some relaxation before the serious intense business. McCarthy isn't blameless in this fiasco; he should have been more proactive as a manager and the FAI are DEFINITELY culpable. But Keane had a poor temperament and he undermined his manager and teammates with those two stupid interviews. If he had kept his mouth shut and honoured his agreement with McCarthy not to talk to the press, he'd have enjoyed training in Japan and would have led the team against Cameroon. But he showed with his actions and behaviour why he was not the right choice to captain Ireland.
@guppy97133 жыл бұрын
@@Mani26031981 I can't argue with your points. I wasn't trying to justify his actions but he could see the potential of that team and wanted everything in place to maximise that potential. I think they both wanted what was best for Ireland, but they had a different way of looking at things. Roy was a perfectionist and expected everyone in the Ireland camp to meet his high standards and expectations, in terms of preparation, training, commitment, diet, work ethic, facilities and desire to win at all costs. At united, he was used to winning trophies at the highest level. Whereas, Mick was a laid back character and not very ambitious about Ireland's chances of winning the world cup. You could call him a realist. Getting out of the group stages or to the quarter-finals was good enough for him and the IFA. This negative mentality frustrated Roy, which led to their heated explosion.

@tinnedtuna82423 жыл бұрын
McCarthy should have kept his cool, but he was inexperienced as a manager and Keane's relentless baiting of him got to him in the end. No matter who's describing this episode, it always comes off as Roy looking for an opportunity to make himself a martyr. He had plenty of options if he wanted to confront the shortcomings of the FAI. He had a bigger platform than anyone in the country. What actually transpired was the natural result of Keane's role at Man Utd as Ferguson's enforcer. Free to insult and bully anyone at the club as he pleased because Fergie was standing behind him. Keane got too used to dealing with people this way. And when it wasn't happening the Man Utd bubble, with the weight of Alex Ferguson behind it, a lot of people just wouldn't put up with it. McCarthy made mistakes but Keane is the one who pushed it all to the brink. Openly disrespected both his teammates & his manager and then played the victim when they called him on it.

Or. Ireland’s set up for that World Cup was that piss poor it resembled a non league team. Keane worked in a world class set up at United, and foolishly expected the same from Ireland. Basically came down to standards and integrity. Prior to leaving for the world cup McCarthy asked to meet with Keane as the captain to discuss the world cup and the preparations. Keane invited McCarthy to his house. McCarthy asked Keane for his opinions because he knew that having worked for years under Ferguson that he had far more experience of top quality facilities and nutrition. They discussed flying arrangements, hotels, diet and training facilities. As the Ireland team flew out "Economy class" half way around the world it was already looking like McCarthy hadn't paid any notice to Keane while the FIA flew out "Club Class" The rest is history. Two players got small injuries on the potato field that masqueraded as a training pitch. There were no footballs when the players turned up for training. Although a step up from Jack Charlton's Guinness and cheese sandwiches the nutrition left a lot to be desired. It was amateurish at best and Keane felt that the Irish team, if well prepared could actually do something @ this world cup not just turn up for a jolly. He was disgusted and felt that the Irish fans were being cheated by an English manager especially after so many spent fortunes getting to Japan and Korea. Whatever anyone thinks of Keane he has very high standards and principles. McCarthy failed to meet them and his whole career has proven that McCarthy hasn't got the nous to be successful in the top division. Contributions to relegation's @ Millwall & Sunderland prove that!!!
@amachale4333 жыл бұрын
The best analysis I’ve ever read about this! Keano was on another level to most of these jokers, he was the captain of one of the best teams in the world at that time and expected professionalism and dedication. This rubbish that he ‘let his country down’ is nonsense. The FAI did that and had been doing it for years
@KryptonitetoallBS3 жыл бұрын
@@amachale433 Absolutely spot on mate!!! More and more people are beginning to realise all these years later just how badly the FAI had been treating our team whilst dining out on our success. They swanned about like they were the stars while the real heroes were people like Big Jack Charlton, Paul McGrath, Keano and Robbie Keane. In 1996 our profile , support and world ranking meant we could have gone for a real top class manager. Instead the FAI got a "Yes" man in who wouldn't rock the boat and ensured that they could live a lavish lifestyle on the back of the players efforts!! Despite our team being poorer atm and having McCarthy back, the future for the Republic is brighter because Keane shone a light on the FAI in a way that had never been done before. When we get a new batch of quality players they will get treated better. Eire go Brach.

Mick was born to Irish parents and sees himself as Irish with a Barnsley accent. He wanted to play for Ireland from day 1.
