I always thought Vader's death was a bit... abrupt. So like any good Star Wars fan, I've concocted this elaborately-researched backstory that gives a deeper explanation to a question that George Lucas would almost certainly answer with "Lightning... duh."
(As much as I love all the extra canon and EU/Legends stuff, this theory really only sources the movies; please don't Force choke me.)

Just saw this from a Reddit ad, and holy crap, this might be one of the greatest Star Wars theories I have ever seen. Like, it's not some strange fan fiction with no credibility. This is actually really good, has evidence, and, as you said, really raises the stakes. Really well crafted and great thinking. I could very well see this being the case, though I doubt it will be straight up confirmed to leave some ambiguity. I still wonder how, if in any way, the sequel trilogy will tie into all of this though. Just seems so... disconnected from the rest of the saga.

This comment alone has made that reddit campaign worth it haha. Yeah, I do feel like the new stuff has very deliberately distanced itself from the prequels. I see why they're doing it, but I hope they find a cool way to incorporate some elements from it in the future. Personally still crossing my fingers for an Obi-Wan movie, since he's my fav character.

I am floored. I would have ACTUALLY CARED about Anakin/Vader if the movies had made this Text in the movies. I'm genuinely caring right now. As far as I'm concerned, this is canon, but imagine the movie series we could have had if THINGS LIKE THIS WERE TEXT IN THE MOVIES!

Yes, very great theory, it adds complexity and makes me cry. But, also, that dude killed younglings. NO WAY he gets to be a force ghost in my head cannon. He can keep "kneeling to Sidious" in space hell as far as I'm concerned.

This is an interesting theory... but having read quite a few of the EU (now Legends, wawa), I've learned that force lightning is incredibly deadly. There was a character, I think in the second book of the Darth Bane trilogy, that could vaporize ppl using force lightning. Why, then, didn't the lightning kill Luke? Bc Palps was trying to torture him while simultaneously hardening Vader that much more. When Anakin betrayed him, he upped the voltage on the beams, so to speak, in an effort to save himself... thus killing Anakin. (That's my theory, anyway) Still, this is a great theory. Then again, Darth Jar-Jar, the drunken Sith master is a great theory also. It's just not true.

Yeah I always wondered about why he died like that but I usually left it to some Dark side 'drive' of hatred driving him until he let it all go when he killed Palpatine. But this is a great non-official explanation that i'll use from now on. But keep up the awesome work on your horror videos👍

The tabletop gamer in me is screaming "IT'S NOT ELECTRICITY ITS LITERALLY HATE ENERGY" Ok, sure, the game doesn't count but its hardly a stretch to suggest the super energy was not some ordinary thing they had shielding for.

This theory feels like it's trying to fill in a hole that doesn't exist. THere's nothing strange or jarring at all IMO that the Emperor's force lightning would be enough to damage the life support of his suit and leave him dying.

there was something i heard on a podcast years ago- and to my shame i can't remember who it was or what podcast though i'm pretty sure it was tabletop gaming related- where this guy asked a simple question about revenge of the sith that pretty much ended my need for theories that try to explain star wars- what engineering problem is flying robots with buckets of lava the answer to?

@@youareivan it’s a “nerdy” pursuit… it’s “mental masturbation…” it’s a fun thing to think about. Cinema buffs are going to overanalyze ever frame of a film. “Nerdy” folks who already like prefer sci-fi above all other genres are REALLY going to overanalyze classics like Star Wars. In doing so, they’re gonna connect a lot of dots that aren’t there. They’re going to read waaayyy too much into “hidden meanings” that the filmmakers never intended. I bet you’ve seen “Wisecrack?” Do you think literally every single Rick and Morty episode is a philosophy lesson? Of course not! But it’s an entertaining way to learn about philosophy. There isn’t much substance to these analyses. I hope most don’t take them too seriously. They’re fun for fans of (whatever movie) to think about!

How old is Vader supposed to be when he dies? That looks like a 70 year old man in that broken suit but Anakin couldn't have been more than 20 when Luke and Liea were born and they couldn't have been older than mid-20's during the events of Return of the Jedi. More continuity errors that Lucas likes to think do not exist.

@@radka2065 Yeah skinny dipping in lava does not do one's complexion any favors. Also Luke must've grown up fast if it was less than a decade from Revenge of the Sith to Return.
