There’s this little detail I really admire all throughout ROTJ, and that’s the narrative detail put into Luke’s costume. In the first movie, he wears solid white. In the second film, his main costume is all grey. In the third film, his costume turns jet black, just like Vader’s. It helps reinforce the idea that maybe this isn’t a good thing, maybe he really will turn to the dark side. But then, after he rejects Palpatine, throws away his lightsaber, and declares himself a Jedi, a panel on his tunic pops open to reveal white fabric underneath.

The meaning behind the green lightsaber is, a blue lightsaber wouldn’t have shown up in front of a blue sky during the Tatooine scenes so they needed to change the color. It’s still dope as hell and 9-year-old me lost my shit at the sight of it.

I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing that Leia doesn't have a character arc. By the time we meet Leia in a New Hope, she is already a driven and altruistic individual. Even when her planet, her home, her people is destroyed, she refuses to reveal the rebellion's location. Like Superman before her, it's not Leia that needs to become a better person, it's the galaxy around her that needs to learn from her.
@nothingruler14All5 ай бұрын
Yeah, she seems like the only one of them that is already self-actualized, or grown up, so I don't need for her to have a character arc. She starts out as a good example of what Han and Luke should become.

People complain about the second Death star but its place in the story is completely different. In Episode IV Death Star is the ultimate symbol of the empire's totalitarian use of technology for the sake of control. The whole movie has an anti-war, anti-technology theme which culminates in Luke turning off the autopilot and using his instincts to blow up the Death Star. In Episode VI Death Star is a bait that the emperor uses to lure all his enemies into a trap just so he can turn Luke to the Dark side - and his plan works 100%! I also don't understand how anyone could dislike the finale of Episode VI when it offers the first full scale space battle with actual fleets instead of the cat and mouse plays that we had gotten so far. This had such an influence that almost every Star Wars movie since tried to mimic it but they never surpassed it's level (maybe in ROTS and Rogue One but that's debatable).

It also makes sense that the Empire would have built a second version of their new super weapon in case, on the absurd off chance, the first model went and blew up.
@hubris74346 ай бұрын
I always thought it played into Lucas' critique of the Empire as the film industry, which shoves out the same thing again and again, because the good guys (fans) can't say "no" to it. The Emperor basically turns to the camera and says "I built this cause you idiots keep falling for it".
@coreyander2864 ай бұрын
Those are good points, but I do think we should remember that, at least from what I remember reading Gary Kurtz said (and he might've been biased), Lucas chose a second Death Star because he was disappointed he couldn't do everything he wanted to with the first one; hence the "first full scale space battle with actual fleets". According to this story, Lucas choosing a second Death Star was from the same itch he had to do the Special Editions, wanting to perfect what came before rather than do something new. Couldn't he have done all that, the bait concept, the full scale space battle, with some non-Death-Star MacGuffin? A Galaxy Gun? An administrative city planet at a strategically important place in the galaxy? A black hole thingy?

Return of the Jedi is my favorite Star Wars movie, and it has always been largely influenced by the throne room conflict which starts as a battle of wills, continues as such introducing lightsabers. Vader searching for Luke hiding in the dark him probe for what will reveal his location, what will turn him, finding the Lea angle and the raw savage emotion of Luke coming out swinging with that fantastic score the blood rage and then the moment were he stops and sees himself becoming vader and completes his training rejecting the violence throwing his weapon away has and will always be my favorite scene in the franchise.

Thank you! I love Return of the Jedi. It's got so many great moments, and it's a very satisfying conclusion to the story. Every single line of dialogue by Palpatine; the conflict that is somehow visible on Darth Vader's mask as his son is about to die; Luke's rage, which he eventually manages to overcome when he tosses his light saber aside; and yeah, the Ewoks. I like the Ewoks. They fit the story thematically, as you've eloquently explained, and also, they're really fuzzy and cute and even funny. I love how they use their "primitive" guerilla tactics to fight to empire, how that battle goes back and forth - some traps work, but some don't; it's all fun and games, until one Ewok dies and his comrade tries to wake him up, then realizing he's gone and sighing in grief. It's just so good! I think one man is to blame for all this hate towards ROTJ, and that man is Kevin Smith. Don't get me wrong, I like the guy, but that one scene in Clerks somehow managed to convince a lot of people that ROTJ is bad, and worse yet, that you actually have to choose between Empire Strikes Back and ROTJ. I've always seen them as parts of the same story, complementing each other rather than competing with one another. Also, the argument against ROTJ in Clerks is ridiculous - yeah, it had Muppets - but so did the other movies. Also, it's Dante saying it, and he's a mopey idiot.

The lightsaber fight in RotJ is my favorite in the franchise, for the sheer weight of the emotions the characters are feeling and how their acting is conveyed by their fighting style. And possibly my favorite thing about it is that it's completely irrelevant to the larger Battle of Endor. As far as we know, that shield generator is going down and Lando's blowing up that big space-ball, whether Luke wins the battle for Vader's soul or not. But it's important to Luke, and Vader, and the Emperor, so it's important to *us*.

Just found your channel. Watched your lighthouse video. (Very interesting) RotJ has the best scene in all of Star Wars. That scene is when Luke, after achieving the defeat of Vader, is offered his father's power and does the most memorable maneuver any Jedi has ever done. He tosses his weapon, his lightsaber, away. It's the one tactic that we cannot imagine any sith ever doing. And it solidifies Luke's resolve to never join the dark side no matter the cost. Truly EPIC!!!

One thing about the Ewoks that is often listed as a criticism but I think should be examined a little deeper and seen as a positive is the actual ASSAULT the Ewoks put against the Empire. The common criticism is "how did these dudes whip together all of these attacks and booby traps in, like, and afternoon?" And I think the thing we should see is... it was never just an afternoon. They had been planning and building this stuff for MONTHS. We saw how they reacted to the Rebels in their forest, you can easily imagine they STARTED with the same reaction to the Empire, only to suffer for it. So they went home, licked their wounds, and plotted revenge. And the Empire never even noticed because they thought the fuzzy bastards were too inferior. In an alternate timeline, the Ewoks might have overrun the shield generator all by themselves just on pure, jagged SPITE. If anything, the Rebels came in and screwed up THEIR plans.
@hartthorn3 ай бұрын
I just love the idea of Ewoks being these universally underestimated little buggers but you point them in a direction with a purpose they can become TERRIFYINGLY capable. That if the Rebels had managed to recruit the Ewoks and the Jawas (another favorite "capable little dudes" race), the Empire would have been decimated within by lunch time.

Now this movie is the movie that not every protagonist is the hero of the story they twist it by giving the antagonist the chance they needed since the first movie like Luke giving Vader the chance to save him and overthrowing Palpatine for the advantage to save his son than both killing and becoming the man that he swore not to become from the first movie which gives Vader the character ark that makes him the protagonist of the skywalker saga which is a very large twist. George is very smart with making movies like these to give a good message that not everyone is the "Hero" of each story.
@JenniferKokoski9 ай бұрын
I was a little girl when a New Hope came out. It was an instant favorite and I saw it three times in the theater. Which was a big thing back then. You only saw a movie once and then not again until maybe years later when it came back in theaters. We didn't have home video or streaming. So if you liked a movie you went back to see it again and again. Empire strikes back was brilliant for the twist reveal at the end. It was the biggest secret everyone was talking about. Or not talking about depending on if you had seen the movie. I get why people like it today but it's still not my favorite. Mostly because it ends unfinished. Nobody gets what they want in the end of that movie. Vader doesn't get his son. Luke loses his way. Leah loses Han. And Han is lost to a bounty hunter. Even Lando loses his cushy mining operation. But return of the Jedi was the absolute best of all Star Wars movies. And that includes the prequels and sequels. ROTJ resolved all the character arcs in a satisfying way. It created the emperor as the most malevolent villain in movie history. And that last 30 minutes with three battles going on at the same time had me literally on the edge of my seat. I saw this movie three times in the theater. And hundreds of times when it finally came out on video. You cannot do a finale better than this one. As for the ewoks, yes they were cute but people forget they were actually vicious savages. Remember they were going to roast and eat our heroes when they first met them. And then you had all those dead stormtrooper helmets they're casually playing drums on at the end. But the most heartbreaking scene is when the two ewoks get shot and one dies leaving the other to moan in agony. People think Baby Yoda is cute and deadly but it was the ewoks who first brought cute and deadly to Star Wars. I only wish the prequels hadn't ruined Anakin Skywalker's character and the sequels hadn't ruined Luke Skywalker. Both of them had potential. We see Luke much better developed in books and animated series. Anakin is a much better character in the animated Clone Wars series.
@mishynaofficial6 ай бұрын
Completely agree. But Prequels ruined Obi-Wan and The Emperor as well, and sequels ruined Leia and Han, too.
@JenniferKokoski6 ай бұрын
@@mishynaofficial I don't think Obi-Wan was that ruined by the prequels. I mean the guy was an frequent liar in the OT as well. It did ruin the Jedi Order. Instead of being these noble knights they were a fanatical religious order. I thought Leia was pretty good and the sequels but splitting her up from Han was just heartbreaking to me. My 13-year-old self imagined they lived happily ever after following ROTJ. The one that really bugs me to this day and is the reason I refuse to watch the sequels again is how badly Luke is ruined. I'm one of those Star Wars fans that absolutely despises what Rian Johnson did. I could play along with JJ Abrams and Rey being a Palpatine but turning Luke into this homicidal pessimistic hermit is just so wrong.

I love ROTJ, but even if all the other scenes sucked, the film would be worth the viewing for the showdown between Luke and Vader. Just fantastic action and emotional suspense. The light saber duel is more riveting than most of the fancy showmanship in the prequels because you care so much about the stakes.

One thing the Disney EU has done exceedingly well has been to illustrate Vader and Palpatines toxic and complicated relationship. From the asshole father/son dynamic, to Palpatine always letting him subtly know who’s in charge, to the fucking head games he plays, just damn.

My favorite is A new hope, i'm a sucker for beginnings; i feel the same about other series as well. It might be that sequels are hard; tough Empire strikes back seems competent in my eyes. I will leave more movie recommendations as i remember them. This time it's Jacob's Ladder (edit: the 90's version). Again, i didn't think it was horror, but i guess you could see it as such, it's probably an age thing. Ask for more recommendations if you want them; otherwise i'll just leave 1 per comment. Cheers !

Thank you I’ve always wondered why this film gets so much shit. The ewoks are goofy and for toy sales, but they are integrated well and being levity to a tense movie of constant struggle. Also I’d get a person not watching it till their 30’s thinking the ending is contrived but it did that story as good as it gets from that era of big bold trilogy stories.

Thanks for defending ROTJ, it's got an unfair rep of being safe and lazy and you defended it quite well. But I disagree on your point about the camerawork. Lucas has always wanted his films to feel like documentaries because it blurs the line of what's real and what's not. Also the "you stand here, you stand here and action" is pretty true for all of the original 6 films most of the time. Lucas wanted a more raw performance and would only step in to correct them beyond just saying "faster and more intense" if he felt like the actors were doing something wrong.The rawness is meant to feed into the realism that the documentary style filmmaking creates. Directors like Ridley Scott, Satyajit Ray and many more used this same method of directing actors. You're right about Leia being Luke's sister not being planned consciously from the start but there's something interesting about how these characters were created. Lucas was toying around with making the protagonist a girl but changed his mind and made her a separate princess character and he even had ideas of Luke having to rescue his brother alongside rescuing Leia in ANH but this brother character was scrapped. These two things kinda make the two siblings from the start but it was unconscious in Lucas's mind until he made it to ROTJ. Luke and Leia were the representations of the traditional male and female hero, the male having to go on a journey to mature into a hero and with the female, she is already already the hero the male aspires to be, she just needs to be able to reclaim her femininity while also being able to stay strong and independant. It's why she struggles with allowing herself to fall in love with Han, she doesn't want to lose that independence she has. But she ends up realising that Han is the right guy for her, she loves him too and he won't hinder her ability to be who she wants to be. Lucas isn't saying that these traditional gendered hero's journeys are absolute though, remember that he was gonna have a female Luke go through the traditionally male hero's journey until he changed his mind. Luke and Leia form a whole that can either be expressed in a romantic coupling or as a sibling pair. Leia's line when she learns of her relation to Luke, "somehow I've always known", isn't her saying she consciously knew this truth. It was deep in her subconscious and it's the same for Lucas, this line is fun because it also works as a nod to what went on behind the scenes. Lucas's version of the sequels would've had Leia realising that the New Republic was going down the same path that the Republic of before was and she would've changed the system and be an example of how to rule effectively and with proper care. Also yeah, you're spot on about ROTJ's story structure. You made a great observation about the theme of friendship and explained it quite well. Also thanks for making fun of the people complaining about the plan to rescue Han, Lando can't get Han out by himself because there's too many eyes. And it's easy to just assume that Jabba is known for using Sarlaccs as a method of execution. There's also the fact that Luke is teetering on the edge between light and dark, we see him use techniques like Force Choke and we can say he's relying on visions to get to Jabba just like what Palpatine did later on in this very film. The prequels also expand on this because Anakin's visions and the fear those visions gave him led him down to becoming Vader, Luke is dangerously close to this. But we still see Luke follow the Jedi ideal of fighting in self-defence when he keeps on giving Jabba a chance to just give up Han and walk away freely. Also good job by showing that other moments like Obi-Wan sneaking around the Death Star and Luke on Cloud City can also be given stupid nitpicks. I agree, Jabba's Palace is so fun and full of life. Perfect description of Jabba The Hutt. Yep, Palpatine is one of the greatest villains of all time. YES, I've rarely seen people compare the Death Star II to Dagobah and it's great seeing you do so! A lot of moments in the series mirror each other and Lucas made sure to make most of these parallels have deep thematic value. Absolutely correct on the vulnerability of Vader. True, Ewoks are great! Also the Ewoks symbolise a return of a childish innocence lost when the Empire was formed. Jar Jar works because he represents this same innocence, we see him being silly throughout TPM and then 10 years later in AOTC, we see that he's matured somewhat into the adult world of politics and finally in ROTS, we see him briefly at the end mourning Padme. He's no longer the representation of youth and innocence he was so long ago. The appearance of the Ewoks hint at the end of the Empire, people only hate the Ewoks because they couldn't see the full picture back in 1983. Very good analysis of the final battle, also yeah the two Death Star battles are very different. Also the second Death Star being more exposed does fit into the vulnerability of Vader and it also functions to help Luke. He's watching the battle from within the super-weapon, the battle for him is no longer out there but here in his mind. Also yeah, the themes of collaboration are very very strong. I love Ackbar too. I saw the films in chronological order so the green lightsaber wasn't a shock to me but the green does mean something. In SW, blue and red don't just mean good and evil, blue can also represent reason/logic while red can also represent passion. Green represents nature and balance, a more mature Luke having a lightsaber with green shows that he'll be able to do what Anakin failed to do when he was in the same position when fighting against Dooku and also when he interrupts the battle between Windu and Palpatine. Also yeah, Luke is burning away the darkness with himself. Yep, you're 100% right on ROTJ helping Star Wars endure as long as it has. I found your channel because a friend recommended me your video on The Lighthouse, very great video btw! I watched a few more of your videos and ended up watching this one too and it's also great! I hope the fact that I've made such a long comment isn't annoying lol. Your kitty is very cute. Two more things, I have a 22k word long analysis of TPM where I go over the film scene by scene to show just how much Lucas thought it all out and I even debunked a lot of criticisms held against the film. It's available on my channel if you're interested! If you end up liking it, there's more because I'm close to finishing my analysis of AOTC and soon I'll have one for each of the Lucas era SW films. This video will help me somewhat with the ROTJ analysis! Now for the last thing, my ranking of the films. Keep in mind that the top 6 are all 10/10s for me and that I'd put them all as number 1 if I could. ROTS>AOTC>ANH>TPM>ESB>ROTJ>>>>>>>RO>TLJ>>>SOLO>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>TFA>TROS. Even though ROTJ is 6th here, it easily has the best ending lol. Thanks for reading my comment!

I can’t sit like that. Idk why. I have a slim body type so it’s not like I’m out of shape. My legs just don’t twist in that unnatural (to me) angle. What’s wrong with me?
@jacquiecotillard96993 жыл бұрын
Hey, some leg strengthening and deep stretches could help. I have the same problem, my knees and hips hurt after sitting like that for any time. Working up the muscles and tendons that support our knees and core in addition to deep hip stretch help relieve the strain of sitting and prevent the knees from lateral stress. Hope that helps!

Unpopular Star Wars Opinion: ROTJ is my favorite Star Wars movie to. I love ANH but it’s my least favorite of the OT. I love TESB and it’s my second favorite Star Wars movie but I find it to be a bit overrated. I love the romance between Han and Leia but it can get kinda boring at times and TESB can be a bit slow points. ROTJ is better paced then ANH and TESB. The lightsaber fight in ANH was lame. The lightsaber fight in TESB was awesome but it’s a little stiff. ROTJ has the best lightsaber fight not just in the OT but the entire franchise. It’s almost the most realistic in the franchise. Unlike the fights in ANH, TESB, the ST and the most of the PT fights it actually looks Luke and Darth Vader are actually fighting. Not stiff like the ANH, TESB or the ST fights and not over the top and ridiculous like most of the PT fights. I like Luke and Leia being brother and sister. I just can’t buy Mark Hamill and Carrie Fischer as siblings and I can’t but them as a couple. Mara Jade was a better match for Luke (Who I like more then Leia. Even though I still like Leia). I can totally buy Harrison Ford and Carrie Fischer as a couple. I like the Ewoks. Ewoks are like Honey Badgers, Wolverines, Tasmanian Devils and Baboons. If Honey Badgers, Wolverines and Baboons kill armed Human beings then Ewoks can kill Stormtroopers! Also having Wookies would be boring. And also having Ewoks defeat them is much more interesting then Wookies defeating them. Also an Wookies don’t stand a chance against the Empire and the Empire would be better prepared to defeat the Rebellion. Having the Empire underestimate the Ewoks fits into “Overconfidence being someone’s downfall. Also Velociraptors In Jurassic Park are small and they can kill armed humans. So what’s the problem here. I also like the idea of the second Death Star. I mean we rebuilt The World Trade Center after 9/11. Should we not have built The World Trade Center after 9/11. Also Boba Fett’s death was awesome. Deal with it. Also I love the tone. It has the lighthearted tone of ANH and the darkness of TESB and it balances them perfectly which not easy to do. Also Green lightsaber all the way. way.
