As a CS prof, I told my students to NEVER accept an unpaid internship. If they had the skills to intern, they had the skills to be paid. Companies soon learned that unpaid internships meant no students from my department. Plus, never go to work for a company who would not invest in improving their I.T. skills.

About the comment about Cobra Group (After story #21): In the UK, beware of your rights under the minimum wage laws. "Commission only" isn't legal if your commission doesn't meet the National Minimum Wage/Living Wage. This means that whilst you can be employed on a contract that states commission only, if across any given payment reference period (the time between each time your employer pays you) you haven't taken enough in commissions to average out at least the minimum wage for each hour you work, the company is obligated to top up your payment to meet the minimum wage. The same applies if you take a job like delivering take away food for a local restaurant. Although what they are likely to try and pull is the "You're self employed" BS. In which case, you need to know that of you are hired for a job described as self employed, but you are required to work days and times specified by the company, and you cannot substitute somebody else in your place, you are classed as a worker and still entitled to receive minimum wage (and tips cannot be counted towards minimum wage by your employer). The minimum wage rules can get a bit complicated, so if you are in a commission only job, or you have been hired to do a job by a company that insists on claiming you are self employed but have to work set days and times, contact the Citizens Advice Bureau for advice on whether you are entitled to minimum wage.

"this company is more like a family" never had a good time at a company that said that in the interview

When the recruiter tells you it's 1 day a month in the office, the interviewers says 1 day a week and the contract says "your working place is the office". I don't mind going into the office, but for that you need to pay a premium to cover travel and the time I spend travelling

Re: Taking interviewees to lunch to observe whether they salt their food: I always salt my food without even tasting it, because after 50 years I _know for a fact_ that I like my food saltier than 90% of people, and I _do not need_ to taste it to know that no food that is being sold to the general populace is ever going to be as salty as I like it. If it was, they wouldn't be able to sell it! What's more, from many years of experience, I know the approximate difference between my preference and the average saltiness of a meal prepared for _normal_ people, so I have a decent idea of how much salt I need to add to various dishes. Anyone who reads a psychological "character flaw" into this is a self-centred jerk, who can't wrap their head around the fact that different people may have different desires and needs from their own. P.S.: My blood pressure is just fine, thank you for your concern. If I was one of the people with a sensitivity to high/low sodium diets, it would have come up at some point in the past decades of me eating like this, so luckily I don't have to worry.

That last story about the web page hit home Theres this well soughtafter speaker (had to listen to his speaches in several classes and camera/editing jobs) Looked into the company when i graduated and website was terribe (like trying to be creative other informative) it is obvious it was to sell him had an innovator vs for his company. The careers and "why is it a great place" centered This was about 10 years ago and site still hasnt changed, no new video marting, and comments of high turnover. You have to dig deep to figure out what the company even does I been to their buildings (doing video work for their owner so their own media department couldnt sell themselves the the building owner) and yea, place was bare everytime i was there (this was pre pandemic) So yea another red flag: nice arcade/break area that nobody is using or all the machines are u plugged

All of these red flags reminded me of an interview I went on in 1994. It was for a perfume company that sold its product on the street. The building was run-down, the man running the site was shady, and very pushy. He'd refer to people as weak pieces of sh*t if they didn't want to work for his company. I decided to decline that offer. Years later, I heard about their company being shamed for their shady practices. If you've ever encountered Sc*ntura creations (or the like), you might understand.

I got a red flag for yall: You apply for a manufacturing assistant role at a pharmaceutical company. The techniques uou will he trained on is laboratory experience. They say its not laboratory experience. It was 3 people with creepy smiles waiting for you to stay yes because they look for desperate people. It was a contract job. When i applied, it stated certain roles and responsibilities and skills you will get. They lied because over 95% of what was on the job listing didnt even exist or was practiced at this place. Actually, they never manufactured anything. Nothing was put into commercial production, the actual production facility was never operational, everything was still in trial run mode and they failed 3 FDA audits but somehow wasnt shutdown. There were way more res flags than this including lying about conpany turnover which was unusually high

#3 reminds me of a story i read somewhere, i think it was "the daily WTF": a company appointed a new manager to a department. literally EVERY other employee in the department quit within a WEEK, writing the manager's name and NOTHING else in the "reason for quitting" part of the paperwork! did upper management get the point? NOPE! they just transferred that terrible manager to another department, *and everyone in THAT department also quit! the OP of that story was part the THIRD department that manager drove away, so i have no idea if the entire company went under... "we work hard and play hard", reminds me of another story i read: a company had a fancy game room easily visible from an outside window, and NOBODY EVER USED IT, for fear of being accused of "slacking off". AND that SAME company uses that "we work hard and play hard" slogan! i just remembered another story from "the daily WTF": after an interview, on the way out, one the guys who did the interview said, "it's too bad you don't have experience with [a certain program], or we could have used you. the FIRST LINE of his Resume said he DID have experience with that program! so they obviously NEVER even read the FIRST LINE of his Resume! he just BARELY managed to keep himself from banging that guy's head into a wall!

The programming experience one reminds me of a post made by Sebastián Ramírez back in 2020: "I saw a job post the other day. It required 4+ years of experience in FastAPI. I couldn't apply as I only have 1.5+ years of experience since I created that thing."

How do you fluff up the eggs without the machine? I have tried to do it before but I had just ended up with bubbly egg whites. Also, how do you separate the eggs without the little machine thing?

If it is a remote interview and they go into the parking lot for the video interview (i dont mind virtual backgrounds but why are you hiding the office?) Anytime you have to do "test days" work couple days in sales so they can ..... ya ya ya not working for free When they mention you are not the gender they are looking for and they dont want people that are looking for career there.... this was at a radio station i was laid off from (i was a board op/call screen screen) and they gave me an interview in promotions (laid off on friday and interview on Monday) just to be told i wasn't what they wanted Later say all pro otions were bo radio professionals, they were all part time shot girls/models in college to other stuff
