Wow. The 392 Hemi and T56 Magnum drivetrain setup in Austin's Challenger do absolutely ridiculous things. This build is a cut or five above the usual projects I've got going on. In fact it doesn't really have a Dead Dodge Garage-y air to it at all. But it's something special - and a project I'm very proud of. I'm extremely impressed by the "finished" product, and seeing it head down the road will definitely be bittersweet. ‪@rocketresto‬

They’re way WAY too heavy but in a way that’s what makes the hellcat/demon versions so great, the insane power matches the weight well true land yachts but @ same time rip hard in a straight line. However to the weight in perspective, I have a C5 Z06 w/ mods that added weight (blower/forged rotating assembly/subs/amps/dynamat) & w/ 1/4 tank of gas it weighed 3240 lbs, a challenger hellcat weighs 4450-4700ish lbs depending how it’s optioned 🥶🥶🥶🥶🥶😳😳😳😳

@DeadDodgeGarage we're not taking about 70 models we are taking about the weight between the old to the new model. My 2012 392 SRT Challenger six speed is nearly the same weight as the old Mopar. Just so you know. I am a retired UAW Chrysler employee 5th generation. Who also was on the board of SRT way back before it was called SRT. Have a wonderful day.

This car was the love of my life. Yes, I wanted the Hemi .. I got a 318 w/ leather and air. (the hemi loses in the mountains on dirt, gravel, Snow or pave. Tires, brakes and suspension were not the tech of today) THAT Said, HELL YES and THANK YOU, .. This is the 'car' she was born to be. *A seldom mentioned, or maybe forgotten gem of these 'pony' cars is they have a full roll cage built in.(ps. with all due respect goodSir - center the SRT in the grill please). Thank you -subscribed.
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 9 ай бұрын
Understandable. I’m doing a crazy road trip with a 318 Charger right now… it’s truly an excellent engine for many applications. We don’t get a choice unfortunately - the emblem only fits in that one position on the pad that originally mounted the DODGE letters. The pad extends from the bottom of the grille and is only so wide. I wouldn’t call the built in unibody structure a roll cage - but I’d rather it be there than not be there.

This in-depth drive of a 392-swapped classic Mopar is super helpful to me. I have a 2014 5.7 Hemi with the intention of sometime swapping it into my '70 Duster. I have pondered getting a 6.4/392 to swap instead but after seeing how much of a handful that is in a heavier E-body I think the 5.7 with a big cam will be more than enough in my A-body. I'm also not as concerned now "settling" for a TKX 5-speed as opposed to a T-56.
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 9 ай бұрын
No the 5.7 will be *plenty*… and I definitely prefer how the TKX shifts, personally. Five gears is more than enough. Haha. Also it fits the A body so much better. Go for it!

This car is perfect! I love that it still looks very much like a stock 71 in every way but has just the right amount of modern upgrades to make it so much more drivable and enjoyable in modern traffic. They’re all rare today but being that it was a 318 car it’s not like you’re ruining some rare thoroughbred. Really all the things you’ve done could be undone pretty easily anyway. Plus who cares! It’s your car and do to it what you want. Love the fact you added a rally cluster and it works! Modern lights for factor looking head and taillights is an excellent addition and will keep you and your car safer from texting idiots. A modern 392 with a Tremec 6060 has got to rip in this chassis. This is my vision of what a Resto mod should really be. So classy! Sorry, forgot to mention: I really love that you’ve kept the suspension a torsion bar/leaf spring and just upgraded pieces. Those coil over setups might be great but drift to far from original for me. I like the play the hand your dealt philosophy.
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 9 ай бұрын
Totally agree. If it’s going to be modernized, this is my idea of the best way to do that. And I am all in on keeping the torsion bars. Make ‘em bigger, sure, but it’s what makes these cars what they are.

Beautiful car, I once owned a similar red 1974 Challenger. Just my opinion but think it would be more interesting to see a built up old school 383 or 440 with modern component like aluminum heads, hydraulic roller cam, and aftermarket fuel injection with timing control. Would have to be both much cheaper and much easier than that 392 swap with all the mods that requires. I would venture a guess the owner is good with tying up in that over 50 year old car more than what a new Hemi Challenger would cost.
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 9 ай бұрын
He’s very much good with it - but he has told me that he is in it for less than he sold his modern Hemi Challenger for. Big blocks are great. I like ‘em. I built one exactly like that for another project. But when this guy is cruising and getting 25 MPG on the highway, yet can fly past literally anything… I think he will be happy with his decision.

@@DeadDodgeGarage It is all about what you are looking for. I own both a newer Mustang & older restored collectors. The Mustang had a full warranty, has been trouble free all of its current 50k miles, gets great gas mileage, has zero squeaks, rattles, or leaks, plenty of power, and if needs repairs it would be welcome at any shop. The collector cars although driven very little always seem to have issues pop up, parts can be hard to find, and I had to learn how to make my own repairs because local shops here won't touch an older car. Most refuse to service even newer cars that have been modified. Restomods are fine for traveling a few miles to raise the hood at local cruise-ins, but I would take a new Challenger any day to confidently make a cross country trip or use as a dependable daily driver.

Love it man. Awesome car. Great Job. You don't have to use all those gears. I had a 6 spd corvette and if I was just tooling around town I would shift from 1st to 4th all the time. Then 4th straight to 6th. So it was really a 3 spd. It even had a display message that recommended it for economy. I still can't get used to that extra wide chrome nose trim. I just became aware of that rare option a few years ago. And I've been around challengers since the late 1970s. Keep up the good work and thanks for the videos.

I'd have to say this is one of the better "resto-mod" Mopars I have seen. It's a good combo of old and new, and it definitely has some wicked performance. The only critique I would have would be on the wheels. I'm just not a big fan of the newer big-inch wheels on the older cars. I've seen worse than this, but a set of stock (or stock-looking) Mopar rally wheels from 70-71 would look better, or Magnum 500s.
