I'm a former sailor (had to give it up due to health reasons) and sailboat racer. I've never sailed as far as you have but have sailed extensively on both coasts. Also sailed a 40 foot Hunter with some friends from Hawaii to California once. I love watching your videos as they allow me to see places that I know at my age I'll never get to see. Once you own a boat, put time, money, new setups, and add the fun thing's, like seeing how happy that designed dodger made you. It's so hard to let it go, and start all over again. Holly, when you got into the blisters on the hull, did any smell like vinegar? Osmosis can be an issue in old boats, and this not only blisters the gel coat, but eats at the fiberglass. If so, the hull may need to be dried out after opening and washing the blisters before grinding out the divit, filling with epoxy, gel coating and then bottom paint.

You might think about buying some wooden plugs, used if the valve on a through hole fitting fails or the hose pops off. Tie the wooden plugs around the valve. It's a nice safety precaution

One thing that you could have bought in the America is Gorilla Glue. This is actually polyurethane foam that is moisture activated. It is awesome for solving plumbing joint problems. Most people say “what happens when you want to get the joints apart”, good question, but most joints only have to come apart when the hoses fail, hoses become smelly, the hose clamps fail, or you want to change the set up some how. Frankly I prefer to have it so that I don’t need the clamps. I put them on but if they fail they are not going to sink my boat. To use it you put on just a smear around one of the parts and wet the other surface (optional) put them to gather and an hour later you will that the foam has expanded and there will never be any leaks. It is a really cool material to have aboard. Gorilla Glue. Apart from that I am converting all of my plumbing to “O” Ring Seal quick release connectors as are now standard on Jabsco Pumps, and I am designing push together fittings to put in the lines of pumps and equipment that are not up to that standard. I have a design for the 40mm toilet and scupper size hoses but haven’t tooled the parts yet. You would use that to have adaptable plumbing so you could for instance “clip” a bilge or flow pump into a line. Anyway the message is Gorilla Glue for sealing lines and Captain Tolley’s for fixing leaks.
@WindHippieSailing
@WindHippieSailing 2 жыл бұрын
Awesome advice on the Gorilla glue. My sister is flying down in two months and maybe I'll have her bring some. I'm in the same school as you about hoses. I would rather have it be really hard to get apart but never have to worry about it accidentally falling off
@Garfield.Farkle
@Garfield.Farkle 4 ай бұрын
@@WindHippieSailing I am an old retired carpenter with 45 years in the business and am leary of Gorilla Glue. It foams up and is like a sponge. It's supposed to be good on wood but is not nearly as good as ordinary carpenter's glue. I have also seen it rated as being mediocre when ranked with other adhesives. I think it had carbon dioxide crystals or something in it that cause it to foam up and when it does, it's full of tiny air pockets that will hold water. I think a lot of people get sold on Gorilla Glue because of the mean-looking gorilla on the label. I doubt it is intended to be used in a marine environment. 5200 made by 3M is amazing. It was developed as a caulk but is such a powerful adhesive they came out with a weaker version called 4200. I've heard lots of stories of people bedding stanchions in it, and later deciding to move the stanchions and end up chiseling out a chunk of deck. 5200 stays flexible in the sun and will bridge a gap of up to a half an inch. 5200 is the only thing I've seen glue leather well. I used it to repair the soles of my deck shoes when the bottoms wore down until the cordage holding them to the uppers wore and gave way. Once you open a tube of 5200, use as much as you can, because it will set up inside the tube within about 2 weeks, no matter how you stop the end.

Hello, at 18 min 45 sec into the vid you show the bottom of the hull where you are sanding for the blisters. Im a bit concerned with that run of almost vertical side by side cracks that appear to be from impact with some large object. You need to have a good look at that area and see if the fiberglass of the hull needs reinforcing inside and outside.

@@WindHippieSailing Highly recommend Queensland starting from the mostly all weather Gold Coast Seaway, then internal waterway to Moreton Bay, Brisbane, then north. Best season for Whitsundays is from March/April to about October November after which heat, rain, cyclones and stingers make the North less than fun. I live in the mountains but have a 25' sail boat at Manly Harbour on Moreton Bay. Enjoyable winds for you!
