The no touching rule reminds me of my middle school. Me and 2 other friends were walking to lunch and we decided to link arms like in the Wizard of Oz. We're laughing and joking with our arms linked. One teacher yelled at us for "inappropriate touching" all of us were like tf. This video made me remember that. I still find it stupid to this day Edit: My middle school had what they called a "zero tolerance policy". If you're involved, you're getting in trouble. If you so much as block hits and not even hit the other, you'll get in trouble.

Ah yes. Zero tolerance rules, an unrealistic standard that punishes the innocent the same as the guilty. Glad my dad didn’t have that the one time he punched a kid in school and broke his nose for the second time in a week. (First time he broke his nose was when he elbowed him in basketball, hence why he tried to get back at my dad, but a teacher saw the whole thing)

Zero tolerance. The rule that encourages breaking the other kid's neck because by the rulebook definition, murder is just as bad as simply getting (potentially also lethally, due to internal damage) punched in the side by some douchebag. A school I went to technically also had it, but I don't recall it ever being invoked because no one in my range of notice ever fought. I could imagine that if I ever got hit unfairly by the rule for "being part of an attack technically", there would be a non-0 chance the policy would have changed because my mom would have moved heaven and earth to kick their legal butts.

I had the same situation in middle school with the no touching rule. It got quickly axed because the ASB kids’ parents had the money and power to sue the school district. Our district is broke and could never afford the lawsuit.

When I was in elementary school, it was a strict no bullying policy. Yet, any bullying that was happening still happened as it appeared the teachers were blind. It got to the point where I was involved. I was never the bully...I was their victim. For whatever reason, my classmates hated that I was taller than most of them (I come from a family of giants) and I was always picked on for it. Also, my last name was Robinson and this was around the time Meet the Robinsons came out...don't know how that came to be an insult...don't know what went through 7 year old students heads... So, my incident started where my bullies were picking on me when we were all gathered in the first grade hall, waiting for our teachers to come get us for learning time. I had enough and shoved one of the bullies back, accidentally shoving him face first into a brick wall and causing a bloody nose. Magically, a teacher saw that I was the troublemaker in the situation and sent me to the office to call my mom. Now, my mom always taught me to defend myself if I was being picked on or something to that effect (she's African American, so she was bullied relentlessly in school herself) so when she came in to pick me up, she heard I was going to be suspended for "picking a fight" My mom looked at 7 year old me, saw that I was visibly shaking because I was scared of being suspended or yelled at, and looked at the principal, saying that if she suspended me, Mom would see her and the superintendent in court After that, we went out to get ice cream...keep in mind, I was still terrified I was in trouble until my mom told me that I wasn't in trouble. Don't know if they ever kept that policy after I moved on to middle school...hell, don't even know nowadays. But if they do, hopefully they revised it a bit so those defending themselves don't become the bully in the situation

The funny thing about the banning of backpacks, half the time schools didn't give enough time between classes to hit lockers, much less do so AND take a leak. I even went to a school where the classrooms were spread out between a quarter mile and High Schoolers were not given any lockers.
@mrsg8996

A few schools in my area have backpack bans. The get around the locker issue by not allowing text books to leave the classroom. This creates another problem with kids who need to study or make up work. Causing them to either suffer through poor grades or stay late after school where the books are. For my highschooler, the policy was to expect kids to do all their extra study and make up assignments during their scheduled class room time. I have no idea how the policy makers thought kids could catch up during active lessons.

@@mrsg8996 I had a health class teacher who shared his room with another teacher. He told us to leave our books. I spent the entire class without one, only passing by memory from prior classes in a different state. He absolutely refuses to believe someone would steal a text book. I vividly remember him demanding "who would steal a text book!?" I retorted with a "if I knew that, I'd have it, wouldn't I?"

Story 15. I remember my dad telling me stories of when he was in high school. This was way back in the 60's. But the local Sheriff at the time realized that kids were going to throw parties and alcohol would be involved. So the Sheriff decided that the best course of action would be for the Sheriff's Department to throw the parties. They would do it in some pasture land in the county. And deputies would be there all night to break up fights, make sure no one drove who was to drunk to drive (you had to turn your keys over to them on arrival), and keep an eye on people that where hitting it hard. I guess that Sheriff got voted out, because that was all over by the time I got to high school.

When I was 8th grade in Orlando, the Orange County school board had this brilliant idea of swapping middle and high school times to save energy in early morning. It was 2008. Little did they know when high schools don’t turn lights on at 6:30am, the middle schools do so in reality they didn’t save much energy from the grand scheme. Instead it threw the entire county in chaos because growing middle schoolers don’t get enough sleep and high schoolers complain there weren’t enough time to to prep after school stuff, especially football games. After pissing off the entire county they had to change it back the next school year, just when I was heading into my freshman year. The poor class of 2013 ended up waking early for school 5 years in a row.

There were 2 bad ones in my high school. First was "zero tolerance" regarding fights. Didn't matter if you were the aggressor or the victim. This ended up with more fights and more brutal fights at that. Thought process was along the lines of "if I'm going to get suspended anyways, might as well make it worth it". Second was the detention policy. Must be served the same week the detention was earned and receive 3 detentions if you skip detention. Automatic suspension for receiving 10 detentions. How this impacted me was that I had a job and a car. In cold weather, the butterfly on the carburetor would stick and cause the car to stall. Living up north, this had me late to school fairly regularly. Detention for being late. Having a job, I was faced with either skipping detention or being late to work. I asked for the detentions to be scheduled for the following week, so that I could request a late start time or the day off work. The Dean refused my request due to rules. So, I would skip detention and go to work. One skipped detention turned into 3, turned into 6 turned into 9, turned into suspended. Unless my car stalled late in the week, where it would force detentions into the following week, it was guaranteed to end in my being suspended. Knowing this, if I was running late (either due to sleeping in or problems with my car), it became increasingly difficult to convince myself that it was still "worth it" to go to school that day. Same punishment for skipping school as for being late. But there was a slim possibility of my parents giving me a note (excusing me from school) and avoiding the cascade effect of receiving that initial detention. I ended up missing so many days (from skipping school a few times and over a dozen 3 day suspensions) that I was almost barred from graduating. My grades were good enough that despite my many absences, I still ended up passing all but one class. Failing that one class (which was heavily weighted on class participation) prevented my graduation and pushed me into getting a GED.

When I was in middle school, candy (specifically Mexican candy, you know the spicy corn lollipops, the sour/spicy acid powders and the tamarind pulp bars) was prohibited. I feel like it wasn't an issue, some of us would have a candy or 2 for dessert or to give away to a friend, but when the school started to take them away(because having a piece of candy in school is bad for some reason?), that seemed to really hype up the kids and a whole black market emerged and kids started to deal as if it were drugs before and after school, where the busses were, in the hallways, in the middle of class, etc. It was mostly latinos dealing(the ones who knew where the mexican stores were lol). personally, I was a nerd and a goody 2shoes so I would never deal in the school, but I did have my aunt send me huge bags of candy from mexico and I'd deliver those to other kids in the afternoons on my bike or have them pickthem up at my house to resell. I made alot of money that way since I was able to get candy that local stores didn't sell (like guava and coconut bars, there was this really popular squash candy too) and I overpriced the heck out of it. I was also the favorite nerd of many teachers so whenever someone wanted to compete with me, I'd just snitch on them and have their stash confiscated(once I tipped off a teacher, she went up to a kid's locker and told him to open it, lol she came back with 3 bags of candy, she stashed 1 in her desk and told me to take the other 2 to the principle's office... As if, I took it to the library and hid them there until school was over so I could resell), and no teacher ever believed I would ever participate in the candy epidemic(One time, I was snitched on, but there was no proof apparently. A teacher, and a kid, walked up to me in the hall and, from what I understood, he said I was selling candy so... he made the kid apologize to me because he didn't believe him, lol)... That went on for quite a while... I finished middle school and my niece was still taking orders for another year or 2.

My high school got a new principal at the start of my senior year He was a progressive idiot. His first day, he shut off the bell system, stating ' You are young adults that can read a clock, so you don't need them" Well, a lot of the clocks were defective, so teachers ignored them and used their watches. This was the late '60s, when you had to set the time almost daily on most watches, so we had hundreds of students sent to the office for not getting to a class on time. Some students missed their school bus because of this, so it quickly turned nasty. He blamed the students, rather than admit his stupidity. He finally turned the bells back on, thent he reduced the five minutes between classes to three minutes which often had you in a run from one end of the campus to the other end and no time to go to your locker. He was despised by just about everyone.

Zero tolerance policies are stupid. Even if your rule is to give a single lunchtime detention instead of going straight to expulsion, it's prime material for being exploited by bullies with a few brain cells and a few friends. For example: Bully A wants to make Victim's life hell. He goes to his friends, Bullies B, C, D and E, and they each take a day of the week to pick on Victim. Suddenly, you have each of the bullies in detention once a week, while Victim is in detention constantly despite never having lifted a finger to fight back against any of them. And as with most schools, enough detentions on record will see you suspended and then expelled, which will see Victim tossed out the door long before any of the bullies have enough detentions on record to earn them the same punishment. It's completely bullsh*t!
