Hundreds of people are thought to have died during the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia - most of them due to extreme heat as temperatures soared past 51 degrees Celsius.
AFP news agency quoted an Arab diplomat as saying 658 Egyptians had died. Indonesia said that more than 200 of its nationals had died. India said 98 people were known to have died.
Pakistan, Malaysia, Jordan, Iran, Senegal, Tunisia, Sudan and Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan region have also confirmed deaths. The US believes a number of Americans died, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Hajj is the annual pilgrimage made by Muslims to the holy city of Mecca.
All Muslims who are financially and physically able must complete the pilgrimage at least once in their lifetime.
About 1.8 million people have taken part this year, Saudi Arabia says.

With those temperatures cloths that completely cover your body are actually much more comfortable (as long as they're loose-fitting). This is such a money-spinner for Saudi Arabia, yet they've invested nothing in technology, and with their money, and the money generated from the millions of visitors, the government could have come up with leading edge, innovative designs for water dispensers and sprays for the multitudes! The reason for their death is that they came to Hajj without a permit. In order not to be arrested, they took to the desert, and because of their large numbers and the advanced age of some of them, they died from the sun, heat, and lack of water. As for the pilgrims who had a permit, Saudi Arabia provided them with comfort and services, and provided food and medicine, in addition: 250 thousand security men 40 thousand volunteers 35 thousand buses and drivers 29 thousand health practitioners 53 thousand between an engineer, an employee and a supervisor 264 ambulance centres 2,500 paramedics 28 hospitals 124 health centers 203 mobile teams Free treatment Eating and drinking for free Transportation is free This is not the case with sick pilgrims. Saudi Arabia sent sick pilgrims hospitalized to Mount Arafat (the most sacred place for Hajj) to perform their rituals under full medical care.

Hajj is performed during a specific lunar month (dhul-hijjah). It's not like Muslims choose when to do it, unlike umrah. Hajj is according to the hijri/Muslim calendar. And because it's lunar, the Gregorian date changes from year to year. Note to add, one of the conditions of hajj to be obligatory is that the person is capable physically and financially.

they did not just die the saudi government killed them. those who did not pay the fee, were made to walk 20 km on foot in the desert, were not allowed to receive any medical aid, were not allowed to hire any private transport, and were left to give their last breaths. and the worst part they were majority elderly.

Hey what about these elderly people s children why did they allow their elderly parents to make this trip in this terrible heat wave I know that in this culture people take care of their aging parents and as their caretakers they make decisions for them so it's not the Saudi government s responsibility is these people s children who allowed them to make such a dangerous trip in such a dangerous heat wave no one murdered anyone If they didn't have enough money for the special fee who allows them to be more comfortable then no hajj that's it
@me9014
@me9014 18 күн бұрын
@ileanaacacostaacosta1813 Because the government never used to care as much in previous years they decided to be very strict this year. Also many of them do have their adult children with them, and even then they still can't save them from 20 km walk in the desert. The saudi government had always had negligence in haj, in previous years the safety and structure was very stupid, they try to save as much money as possible to fund their failing project neom. But earlier governments the death rate was minimalistic and only bound to people who have many co-morbidities and came to had knowing they would die there.

@me9014
@me9014 17 күн бұрын
@darkroomentertainment5882 yes but people were expecting it and prepared accordingly, On the other hand these people did not expect the gov of saudi (unlike previous years) to throw them out in the desert to walk for 20 km. For example some people who would have otherwise not considered going expected to walk far less and use transport more often due to old age, but the gov forced them to walk it on foot by stopping them in the middle of the desert, not allowing them to board any private/Public means of transport. Saudi is just slowely making the haj for the rich only.

I am in Meccah and can say the Saudi Government has done an absolutely amazing preparation for this year's hajj. Majority of the people that sadl6 lost their lives are those that partook hajj illegally. So they were not in air-conditioned tents and other accommodations. They were sleeping outside in the heat. I saw people complaining that their dead relatives were not butried quick enough. The Government has to establish who the person is, try identify how they got in and which company he was travelling with. For the illegal pilgrims this exercise is very difficult. May Allah have mercy for the deceased.

Let’s set the record straight. Most of the people who died in Mina after the stoning ritual did not take illegal routes - There are only specific, closed off routes that people can take and they are heavily guarded by police. It’s a ling walk to the stoning site but people made it. They died because the authorities closed all train services and blocked the main road and didn’t let any buses or cabs to enter. Exhausted pilgrims had to walk for miles to get a ride, if they were lucky or afforded it. There was no medical help, water or shade and if someone stopped, the police would yell at them and push them to keep going. These people paid heavy amounts of money and were treated like animals. It was an absolute tragedy. We paid (2500 KSR) $670 for a $40 ride to stay alive. It is heartbreaking to think of so many, many who could not. Instead of running shuttles and extra trains, shutting them down is no coincidence.

Agree it's too many clothes. And The clothing should not be closed to the skin. All the women are wearing cloth wrapped closely around their heads when it would be better to be wearing a wide-brimmed hat that's loose on the head. Some of the women are even wearing black cloth face coverings! And all the women are required to wear an exta layer of clothing - the Abaya. A person can keep much cooler if air is allowed to get to their armpits, which is impossible for the women who are required to wear layers.

Naw, it's your imagination. Ignore that sweat dripping down your face and soaking your clothes, there's no heat wave. There's no climate change. Everything is hunky dory. After all, there's still snow in winter, right?

50 deg in summer is not at all unusual, many people will leave over the summer months or stay indoors with air con. These sad deaths are due to poor planning and facilities

Dr. Mohammed Al-Abd Al-Ali, the ministry's spokesperson, emphasizes the importance of adhering to health guidelines issued by the ministry. These include carrying umbrellas to avoid direct sunlight, drinking sufficient water, and taking breaks between rituals to reduce fatigue and heat exhaustion.

@@stephfoxwell4620I want to say most people on the right are not denying climate change. The disagreement about how either realism or cynicism about how we respond depending on how you look at it, but as always Farage has a point and the left get infuriated because it’s not politically correct.
