The problem with the Shotgun is,.... if little Jonny is being held by an intruder (God forbid), you may as well be holding your D**K in your hand. In other words, you MAY need precision in certain circumstances. Other than That situation (And maybe a few more), a shotgun is a great home defense tool.
@spencerhoff7373
@spencerhoff7373 3 жыл бұрын
So, coming from an AR guy, in cqc, you cannot refute how incredible a shotgun is as a fight stopper. Most of the time, in typical self-defense ranges (7 to 10 yards or less) a handgun cartridge (even out of an sp5) takes roughly 2.2 rounds, so in reality 3 to incapacitate one threat. 5.56 is still about 2 but a shotgun with buck or slug simply STOPS FIGHTS. Landing one shot of buck at 7 yards is going to be extremely devastating. One and done. Its very hard for someone to keep fighting after some 12 gauge just because of the tissue damage inflicted.
@averageoutdoorsman9342

Not to mention how much easier it is for an average person to effectively neutralize a threat in a high stress situation, if they have buckshot over a single projectile. Superior firepower is always king.

Agreed. With their input on reload go for a mag fed shotgun. However if I was going strictly for home defense and the gun never was shot except when stuff hit the fan I’m going pump action. Weather or not you go mag loaded or not I would still consider a pump. The odds of a pump not performing are slim to none.

@@dylansilcox8577 I've put literally thousands of rounds through my mossberg model 500 pump action 20 guage and never had a single malfunction. Also I'm not going to lie, I haven't cleaned it as often as I should. It's a testament to not only mossberg, but also exemplifies what you just said. They don't malfunction. And I'd imagine that clearing a malfunction is extremely easy and fast in the event it happens. They're effective weapons. They do their job, they do it effectively,, they do it reliably and honestyl, they dont require a lot of skill to be effective with. For the normal person, I don't see what's to complain about or lose.
@AB-sr6nc
@AB-sr6nc 2 жыл бұрын
Mag fed shotgun wins fairly easily for home defense. First and foremost 223 will easily go through walls. And in a home those walls could contain your family. Second in a home break-in situation high stress means less accuracy, unless it's a rare hostage situation. I want 9 chances instead of 1 every time I pull the trigger
@spencerhoff7373
@spencerhoff7373 2 жыл бұрын
@@AB-sr6nc i personally am not a fan of mag fed shotguns. Though pumps tend to be unstoppable, the mags themselves can be problematic sometimes - mostly depending on the make & mag design. I personally would prefer one with just a cruiser ready setup and a side saddle. That said, I think you may be surprised to find that 5.56/.223 tends (not always but tends) to overpenetrate LESS than buckshot, slugs, and sometimes even 9mm. This is due to momentum. You can find videos on it or do the calculations yourself. So idk about that part, but yeah. Still stand by the fact that shotguns are show stoppers. Every gun has a purpose otherwise we'd all only have one gun! Haha

Best choice not mentioned: .22 LR Mark IV with silencer, all black onesie, and 3 pairs of socks for ultimate stealth. Sneak up on intruder unload 2-3 rounds (or a whole clip) without blowing out your ears. No over-penetration and can keep the small piece under your pillow. One handed to open doors and compact to maneuver.

Penetration comparisons through walls have been done extensively. 5.56 wins over both, hands down. It fragments and doesn't keep truckin like a higher mass projectile. 55 gr. FMJ does its thing and peels apart. Defense and varmint rounds like hollow or ballistic tip even moreso. Suppressed AR FTW.

I used my Mossberg 500 to defend my home against 4 ex~cons. One of them made it to the back but all took off faster than they came when that one guy saw my shogun directly pointed at the rear doors. In retrospect, an AR~15 would have been a better choice for multiple attackers and easier follow up shots if necessary. In an indoor penetration test using a real home, rifles and guns were used with the most popular calibers. To my surprise, the AR~15 penetrated the least. I suspect it shot .223, not 5.56. But it penetrated even less than the 9mm. Since I live behind enemy lines, I have to be careful what I use. I have my .40 pistol on my bed beside me and my 94 Winchester lever action between the bed and wall also beside me. If I should have to use it, that'll diminish my chances of being targeted as an evil black rifle owner. But an AK~47 and AK~74 are also good to have for back up and more serious issues.

Usually with home defense the main issue that not everyone will ever get one (and it is good), but you must be ready for it. It could be so that you prepared everything ready, passed a training and the case is not coming a year, two, three. If you are an intuziast - no problem. When you are a casual, you need to maintain your motivation. Sport is a key here, but it could be bo longer casual enough, or alternatively the device must be so cheap simple an robust (no battaries, life long living amo, very maintains forgiving mechanics). For the second solution first that came in my mind is either break barrel or pomp shotgun stored without amo (because tube mags are known to damage amo). The scenario will be: 1. Pickup the gun and load it (quite fast for a doublebarrel, a bit slower for a pomp, but who said that you should load more than 1-3) 2. Take a defencive position pointing the shotgun at the door. 3. Call the police. In the meantime you can shoot clays with your shotgun. It could be in fact any gun that you are familiar with (granddad's .38 special revolver or 10/22 you shoot soda cans from time to time are both ok) and can use it in your real life circumstances (Which ranges are available around? Where do you want to go?)

In defense of the shotgun, use an AK-based magazine-fed shotgun with frangible mini-slugs. One thing is sure. An assailant hit by a slug, even a frangible mini-slug, is stopped for good. You can use a minimum length, 18.5" barrel with a folding stock and still be legal. With the 9mm, you could use something like Glaser Safety Slugs for inside a home to avoid over penetration. I used same on a burgler to amazing effect, disintegrating 3" of bone in his leg.

The AR plattform has the absolute best ergonomics of them all(AR-15's, AR-9's and AR style shotguns). The only other type of long firearm I can think of for those ergonomics is a bullpup (rifle, PCC or shotgun). Now, AR wins in ergonomics, bullpups win on balance and overall size to barrel lenght ratio. Having that said, AR plattform vs bullpup will come to your main range or sporting weapon and your particular needs. If you train, shoot at the range and hunt with an AR-15, just stick to it... if you dont hunt or compete and you have a very tiny house/apartment where maneuvrability is the top priority and/or you have someone in the house that is not fisically able to run a bigger weapon (like a 5ft/90lbs wife or a person with arthitis) you might be better to stick to a bullpup plattform and adopt it for the range and training too. Now, having picked up a plattform, you run into the new question...PCC vs Rifle vs Shotgun. For me it frames on: 9mm/45acp vs 556/300 blackout vs 12/16 gauge. A shotgun might be out of the table due to capacity and recoil. If you are running a PCC, the cal should match the one on the gun you carry on you. In the case of the rifle, I would rather have 300 blackout unless you are a die hard prepper or you come from a military background and you are married to the 556 round. So... for me it would be 9mm vs 300 Blackout in a short AR plattform or a bullpup. Maybe it makes more sense to have a 9mm round in that home defense firearm just because I would only have to worry about 1 type of mag and 1 type of round. So every bullet in my house will go into any mag in my house and both will go into any firearm in my house. Now, granted I would like a hunting round for that purpose, but it is out of this debate. I use a Mossberg 500 Cruiser with front and rear pistol grips, and no stock. It has a flashlight with a pressure switch on the grip. I use 2 3/4 00 buck. I have put thousands of rounds through it and am extremely proficient. Now, that said, I'm currently building a 300 blk AR pistol for home defense because I like the idea of the versatility.

I would give over-penetration to the shotgun, because one can use #4 buckshot which doesn't penetrate as much as the more commonly mentioned double-aught. I would love to see Classic Firearms do a test of some sort though, using the three choices in this video.

I've read several studies written using empirical data, with lab tests conducted, by various scientists, in particular Dr. Martin Fackler, MD., and it would seem to me -- and I use this ammo in my DP-12 -- that #1 Buckshot is [perhaps] the best home defense ammo for a shotgun. This is not to say other weapons are not as effective. Depending on the situation and location, your mileage may vary.

VERY Light and simple #2 Sig Sauer P220 45 (original German one) with 10rd mag. #3 Standard 12 Pump Shotgun with extended mag tub and flashlight mounted under the barrel on a rail. 3" Turkey Shot #5. The best self defense gun is the one you will actually practice with. I love shooting sporting clays with my shotgun so I would much rather have my self defense shotgun than a pistol in my hand. But I recognize I am not everyone. If you love shooting pistols, there you go. If you love ARs, run with it. Just get trigger time with whatever you are going to depend on. All that said, for a newbie I would recommend the PCC. It is fun and easier to hit what you aim at when your skills are still developing, so it is more likely to drawing them in and get them out practicing.

matt made a comment about "force = mass * velocity", but the equation is really "force = mass * acceleration", and "acceleration = change in velocity, over change in time" - which is what opens up the whole discussion about mass and velocity of a hollow-point, that is trying to dump all of it's velocity to zero in the smallest amount of time. It is that change in velocity over time (in this case going to zero) * the mass of the bullet that creates that force.

An Ar-15 just feels comfortable in my hands, it feels like it was made for me. I first time I shot one it was love at first sight. A shot gun is probably more practical for home defense, but the AR-15 carbine is my comfort zone. I feel confident with a steel CZ75B or an AR-15 in my hands. I know that there are better choices, but I stick with what feels right to me.
