I met up with Lee aka The MacMaster for some lunch, which meant using the public charging network. You won't believe the maths of this one...! What's cheaper, a 1994 Volvo 850 T5 Turbo Saloon or a 2020 Porsche Taycan 'Save The Planet' Electric Battery Vehicle?
You'd think the Taycan should run on nothing but cow farts and windmills, so it would cost 50p to fill the tank and wipe the floor with the old Volvo eh? Well, not so much.

In December I was forced into taking my old car off the road. The rot had become structural, so would have been expensive. Add in electrical ground and other mechanical systems that were nearing end of life and it just was not viable. It had been my mother's last car. She was 60 when she bought it and had put 200,000 miles on it in 25½ years. I drove it another 8½ years and added another 200,000. The automatic gearbox was original. 35-37mpg on the highway was not too bad for a 1990 Volvo 240DL estate with a bit over 400,000 miles.

There is no way that the government can distinguish between electricity used for car charging and for other uses. There will be a charge and it will be based on mileage which is already recorded at each MOT anyway. EVs will still be cheaper than ICEs when this happens. ICEs are doing a huge amount of damage to the environment and as the realisation sinks in they will be taked at an extremely high rate. EVs are the only way forwards if our grandchildren are to have a future.

Those noisy fans Lee and Geoff are the fans that cools the liquid coolant around your traction battery pack keeping the pack cool otherwise the battery pack would be compromised and thermal runaway can start so these fans are extremely important. I believe there is also an inverter fan if your charging via A/C as the inverter onboard your car converts the A/C from the public charger to a DC which is used to charge the traction battery pack so it could be that fan as well.

Thermal run away is a different issue, and very unlikely with modern Lithium ion. The fan, if involved in charging, is just keeping the battery at optimum temperature to maintain a high charge speed. But thanks for efforts, even though you were incorrect.

@@truebrit3670 Many thanks for your comments. If the liquid coolant isn’t kept at a low temperature via cooling fan especially if the battery is DC charging as this bypasses the onboard inverter then the traction battery pack increases temperature this is extremely important to control as I’m certain you are aware. That was the reason for my original statement.

The cost per mile is entirely dependent on the cost of fuel and electric. People must remember that the combustion engine has had decades and decades of refinement and billions of pounds/dollars/Euros throne at it, even the technology in fuel has drastically improved over time with refining. The original model T Ford had about 250 mile range, which by modern standards isn’t that bad! But that car is over a century old! Electric cars have only started real development in the last 20 years or so. And already we are seeing batteries from Germany and China with realistic ranges of 1000 miles within reach. You’ll see these on the roads within the next decade. In terms of price of electric, it’ll be anyone’s guess to what it’ll be going forwards. The war in Ukraine is having a massive impact on electric , along with our odd reliance on buying energy in from other countries. In time it is speculated to decrease as more investment into generation technology improves.

I live in Pennsylvania USA, I work at a CDJR dealership so I follow the EV craze closely as I'm involved. My research is this, a comparable ICE car will cost less to refuel "in the wild" than an EV, if you charge your EV at home it's about the same. If you factor in the extra cost for the charger, plus the extra you pay for insurance, an ICE car is less expensive to run...total cost ICE wins every time.

@user-mp2kk7qk5g 15 күн бұрын
Your research is either flawed, or US electricity costs are way higher than the UK. A UK EV charged at home will always be cheaper to run than an ICE car (assuming average mileage) even adding in the additional insurance/charger costs. Obviously there’ll be edge cases where the charger cost alone could be more than ICE costs, if for example only driving hundreds of miles a year. For my average of 9000 miles a year, an EV is less than 50% of the cost of running a diesel over the time I usually keep a car (8 years). Just taking into account fuel costs, my normal annual diesel cost will pay for 8 years of charging an EV at home.

Not to mention the equivalent ICE will be worth much more ( brand dependent of course ) than EV in a few short years due to massive depreciation of EV. ICE doesn’t spontaneously combust. If you do have to charge “ in the wild” it’s a matter or mere minutes with ICE its 10 X longer with EV, at least. Petrol pumps just work, charge stations often don’t. ICE doesn’t lose range in cold weather etc etc etc etc. EV buyers are fools given how much negative info is available to them now.

That fuel use people get upset about sort of links in to the diesel scandal - VW and others didn't really do anything wrong environmentally, they just took a perfectly sound old diesel and made it work to unrealistic regs. lol, I paid 7.5p a kWh last night (and now actually) to charge my car, and everything on the house is at 7.5p a kWh. Our peak price is 25p a kWh. The meter can't decipher what is car and what is house: it's not on a separate circuit. Do you not understand how it works? When theres a glut of energy (since it's inefficient to throttle back power stations) they incentivise to buy off the energy, hence the cheap price. Octopus are trialing a scheme where they buy cheap power store it in EV's and then sell is back to the grid making a profit.

@@markburton8303”do you not understand how it works?” Do you? Clearly not. Add on the fact that chargers are now mandated to have controlling software in them to address maximum grid demand and do you really think they didn’t add in additional code or that the charger can’t be updated to factor that in?

If there is heat coming from the Charger, this demonstrates a high level of inefficiency in the Charger itself. An ICE vehicle is only about 50% efficient because of the engine heat and Drive Train - which has to be paid for. EVs produce very little heat by comparison, and have a much higher efficiency. Rivers of petrol and diesel are wasted, as millions of cars are stationary in traffic jams, traffic lights, engines idling, which will become more prevalent - as time will tell.

@@svr5423 This loss, even at 1% is recoverable, when compared directly to an ICE Vehicle. On any ICE Vehicle, you brake, and all that energy is lost as heat. You get up to speed, and the car 'coasts', with no compression of the internal combustion engine to hold you back! My 2006 7 seat ford smax will go the same distance on like £35 😂 it insane. Evs are fine for people that lease a car every 3 years and can charge at home. If your buying out right they make no sense you will never recoup the cost. Having a 7 seater there is few options and they horrifically expensive i did the maths before and on a tesla it would take 20 years to break even just home charging. Even at 10 years lets say thats ridiculous.

I usually get bullied by people telling me, that my rusty 20-year old Ford must cost me a fortune and just be a struggle to keep running. In reallity I usually spend between £300-£600 for service and repairs per year on it. The only other costs on top of that will be the tax, MOT and petrol.... I were no good at mats in school. But I think I can drive quite far before I can justify a car loan to drive any cheaper!

On the topic of future prices I keep saying, unless I've got it drastically wrong, that nearly 90% of total UK energy needs and that isn't just electric , its gas boilers, gas turbines gas cooking, then you have our whole transport system which is part of the costs for all our commodities transporting that's road, air train, shipping, agricultural and building, . At the moment our grid output is just about 10% of our total energy needs. So what will happen when that 90% has to be met by the current (nice pun) generation capacity. It will have to raise its output around 900%. So we are expected to believe that we will all have clean EV's, clean ships. total electric transport everywhere, even agriculture, construction, mining, you name it all powered by the grid which will magically raise its production output 900% by 2035. And how will this magic grid be powered, ah yes fossil fuels so even if this fairy tale came true the electricity will still be powered by fucking fossil fuels!!!!!!!!!!.... We also need to understand that to achieve total electrical bliss every house hold, street, road , pylon and substations will need to be renewed dug up and replaced to meet the 900% extra usage. Personally I don't t believe the elite globalist think this is even remotely possible and the grid will stay the same but our energy usage will be cut to a trickle via as Obama (globalist stooge) said in 2012 by skyrocketing prices. We will essentially be like battery hens , Confined in walled towns and cities, Walled not to protect us but to keep us in. Finally is C02 is the all powerful temperature driver that the left/globalist nut cases say then we will also freeze into oblivion as the climate grows colder and energy becomes rarer . t least our ancestors could burn wood
Are used EVs a rip-off?!
