Peter Gabriel has described how jealousy can release one's basic instinct the monkey is not a literal monkey butt a metaphor for one's feelings of jealousy

Peter Gabriel was one of the pioneers leading the way with the Fairlight CMI. This song shows his genius in creatively using it.

Gabriel is awesome. There was a remix competition where he invited anyone to take the original song and rework it into their own creation. He provided separate tracks for all of the Fairlight and Prophet-5 keyboards, Linn LM-1 percussion, vocals, etc. How many major artist have ever done that? The Fairlight and Prophet-5 keyboards on this song alone are just incredible.

First time watching your channel. I highly recommend you listen to the first album of the violent femmes simply titled the violent femmes. You have to listen to the whole album before you can pick a song.

This song was featured on the opening scene for 1987's Project X. The plot depicts the air force exposing monkies to radiation. Do you think he wrote the song after reading the script, knowing the music placement had to be relavant to the plot?

When you mentioned a banana I broke up laughing… Kudos for that! Anyone that can spread laughter is doing A Good Thing. I also particularly love this song. I never thought to spend too much time on the lyrics as the video is so arresting but since you made the attempt I thought about it… my best guess is the monkey is symbolic (clearly a symbol or metaphor) of primal innocence. It is in the same family tree as people but it isn’t a primate-it’s a step below that. A less sophisticated, less capable… more innocent. Thus more “shockable.” A price we pay for our sophistication is a loss of innocence. I’m a classically trained musician-but I grew up during the 60’s and recognize popular music to be just that: the music of the people for our times. As the world is diverse so too is our music; as we have mass communication we have multi-cultural music. In some ways a magical time to be alive. I have my preferences, but I get to enjoy (what I consider to be) good rock, folk, jazz, so-called ethnic… Some introduced by the better popular US/UK musicians of today. For example, you want deep lyrics check out Paul Simon. I absolutely love his album Rhythm of the Saints. Not the most commercially successful, but it is infused with Brazilian-Cameroon(ian?) rhythms & harmonies for a lush, unique sound. “Further to Fly” has deep personal meaning for me. “Cool, cool River” is amazing. The last line is “and sometimes even music doesn’t substitute for tears.“ In the context of a song about poverty and finding one’s place it is nothing short of a slap. The album before it was commercially successful-Diamonds on the Souls of Her Shoes (I think), with South African influences. Lyrics a bit less deep on this but the music is unique. And a few of the tracks-and MVids-are stunning. You liked Sledgehammer, checkout Boy in the Bubble. Paul just released his 20th solo album… Another musician to check out is Sting for a more Jazz take on Rock. “Fragile” is a short guitar solo song with a timeless message. “Be Still My Beating Heart”-perhaps we’ve all been there. “Lost Without You” tells a timeless story. So many others. Suzanne Vega: a favorite is “In Liverpool.” Try and forget that after watching/hearing it. Sadly she didn’t make many MVids for her songs but there are a few (I won’t include the painfully over-played Luka). Last, making a sharp turn, I’m going to suggest a techno-goth descendant of punk (say what?!): Depeche Mode. Painfully talented, their music was constantly evolving and interesting. Making a suggestion is nearly impossible-check out anything from “Violator” and “Songs of Faith and Devotion”. Hope these ideas are of some use. Oh, and don’t worry about sounding crazy. Queue up Seal’s “Crazy.” Watch and listen. Be liberated. 😊

I just took a look at your list of reaction vids: you know *of* the musicians I mentioned though not the albums/songs I suggested. But having scanned through the list I can amend my suggestions. First, my specific titles still remain: you will probably appreciate them. Oh, I got a Sting title wrong: it’s “Mad About You.” And the South African Paul Simon album is entitled “Graceland”. Too many titles running through my head. Sorry about that. Second, I noted that in many cases you tended to include early examples of an artists work. Just an observation. Sometimes their best work comes early then they fizzle; sometimes they mature; sometimes they evolve. Third, no Latin music at all. That’s an entirely new musical world. Okay, first I’m gonna blow your mind with a couple of MVids/songs. Jeff Buckley: Grace kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d5mRl6mIsKudenk.htmlsi=AcX3agcOLRAiIszd 30 Seconds to Mars: Up in the Air kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r5-lhtx6qNjYn6s.htmlsi=T2UAfQtaivZnZaV6 These are entirely different than anything you’ve seen before and will leave you spinning. (but in a good way, I trust) Start there. I noticed a lack of Motown on your extensive list. Have you listened to the Supremes? If not, run-don’t walk. Then Stop! In the Name of Love… Okay, >in no particular order< (and sorry if I duplicate something from your vid list-I just quickly scanned it and may drop a bit here or there…) Joan Baez: Diamonds & Rust kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f9iGd5OTtcXdkps.htmlsi=fJwH_q4Yx5LNF9Nq Sweet Sir Galahad kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iJ-To6V-sZ-3n3k.htmlsi=XcP7EUPL7TqAeWtP Evanescence: Bring Me to Life Jim Croce: Time in a Bottle The Cranberries: Zombie Lady Gaga: Bad Romance Alejandro The Cure: Love Song System of a Down: Aerials Erasure: Respect Bush: Everything Zen Tanita Tikarim: Twist in my Sobriety Massive Attack: Daydreaming Fallout Boy: Centuries This Ain’t a Scene, it’s an Arms Race 21 Pilots: Holding On to You Tear in my Heart The Church: Reptile Nine Inch Nails: Closer kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hrp2qrSBnZymgqc.htmlsi=oJDe9fT8urvICxdd Carlos Santana: Smooth kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bL2YmtGQzquZpZc.htmlsi=oIg9bXRiEfKYFxHC Mike + The Mechanics: The Living Years kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a86iaZd-3b_Ul58.htmlsi=1b58Q6469P4PGvcl Peter Murphy: Cuts You Up kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i9iWeaur1q2min0.htmlsi=VCgbQOmcIScWVQay REM: Losing My Religion George Michael: Freedom ‘90 Tracy Chapman: Fast Car Queen: Bohemian Rhapsody [how did you miss this?!] Kygo: Firestone New Order: True Faith INXS: Need You Tonight David Guetta: Titanium kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gLiWqKSm0L-4e5s.htmlsi=sP4FnPoJbNap5JHm OneRepublic: Love Runs Out kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ZrWHnZN0zrOch4k.htmlsi=rrCPLzXNhglwZKB7 Maroon 5: Cold kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jseki9xnv86viqs.htmlsi=bhAouaGr7Vs25imp This Love kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jragh8p0zdWZinU.htmlsi=PVi5siq3YJigkeT_ Jason Derulo: Cheyenne Disclosure: Magnets Katy Perry: Dark Horse Pharrell Williams: Freedom Imagine Dragons: Shots XTC: Dear God Radiohead: Street Spirit k. d.
