The real problem is that RF doesn't really penetrate water all too well. So you'd either need to operate at VLF or ELF and that means either really big antennas or really limited range so corded underwater drones make a lot of sense. When it's warmer, just put a gopro on a pole and drop it down 10' or so and let it hang. You'll find the fish. Depending on what kind of fish, they might be attracted to light and you and bring them to the surface at night with bright lights.

Fish are very inactive in the winter, so it may actually be a better time to survey them with the drone. They'll sit in the deepest or warmest part of the pond, and sometimes come near the surface on warm days. It looks like you have a very clean (and cold?) pond which may be nice with a few trout. Trout wont reproduce however, so maybe stock a few sunfish.

Another thing, you could probably catch most of the fish out of a pond that size with a cast net if you want to know what lives in there.

Little fish looks like a comet/common goldfish to me. Thats my guess. That's not an uncommon fish for a pond, provided they are being raised as pets, not food. However, they are used as feeder fish for larger fish varieties too, so it may be a lucky survivor. Thats a very nice setup for keeping fish, having a fresh water supply with no electricity required and the water level automatically maintained. I don't think it's an accident there's fish in there. Maybe once it warms up outside you could dip a camera in the water and then toss a little fish feed by it and watch what happens? Surely they will be hungry

Interested to see how the level is maintained in this pond. Given how well it maintains its level, it seems like there must be a controlled outflow. The question is whether the inflow is also metered somehow, or whether it just relies on the outflow to maintain the level. Please keep us posted. Would love to see a diagram once you figure it out.

I suspect there's an overflow spillway hidden somewhere in the pond. Maybe under that rock. Water in the pond won't rise above the level of the spillway.

One thing you should consider is vegetation in the pond. From what I could see in the video is you don’t have much. You’ll need that to keep the water healthy and feed the fish

Put a few fish in, Koi are nice and they grow big over time. The tough ones will survive on their own if it's deep enough. The constant feed of fresh water is very good for them, the same is done in Japan.

It’s possible to place a small heater in the pond to leave a small part unfrozen, could maybe help the fish a little and allow for exploration at any time. A small heater may attract fish when it’s cold to get a better count of them, and a small unfrozen opening could help them get needed air and gives you an opening to feed them if desired.

If this were my property, I would invest in that pond to turn it into a healthy habit for fish. I agree with comments of adding an aerator and vegetation. Cattails and some lillypads of some type. Then I would want native species of fish that are good to eat. No koi for me. Few catfish then bluegill. If trout could survive that would be awesome and my top choice but I’m not sure where you are. Beautiful property. Thanks for the video.

You should check out Naturalake muck pellets. Helps to digest those leaves with probiotics. Perhaps an aerator too if you have water quality issues like algae. I’d consider stocking it with bluegills and a feeder and you’ll have monsters. Purina mvp pellet food is high protein and will keep them happy and growing fast.

More than likely the pond isn't aerated enough to support a large amount of fish 🐠. To fix that run a aerator during the spring- fall, if possible stock it with breeding fish. And harvest the fish 🐠 before it freezes. The fish could be eaten or turned into a various of thing's, like fertilizer, and fish meal, or even fed to pigs etc.

Always a good idea to be mindful of the risk of releasing exotic, possibly invasive, species into the wild. Remember that when checking the fish living in the pond or if you're considering introducing some in there. There's always the possibility of some escaping. :)
