What's In My Pack? Multi-day Hiking Load Out

After recently completing a couple of Long Distance Hikes this year and my Coast to Coast last year, I have been asked many times what gear I use and how I pack my gear. So finally got around to making a video showing the gear I generally take if that helps anyone.
I must stress as I mentioned in the video, don't get obsessed with gear or brands just maybe adopt the principals of the types of gear that may work rather than specific brands etc... I've tweaked and changed my gear over the years for what works for me but hopefully, it will give you some ideas.
I will add the gear below however don't have the weights listed. As an idea...my pack is usually around 9KG for a hike including everything but always less on my back as I use my poles and strap my GoPro to my chest.

Kris I have to tell you something. The rest of those youtebers could learn an important lesson from you. I was super impressed with this video. You didn't try to push the brand of equipment you use my equipment is anything but light but with my health issues that I have had to deal with the last couple years and all my gear is military surplus and my pack for even an overnight is probly 18 kilos but I don't mind and it keeps me very comfortable and safe and to me that's all that matters. What a lovely comment I really appreciate that thank you so much. I really do believe it doesn’t matter what gear you take and like you, everyone has their own reasons for the gear they take which works for them. The principles of layering and types of kit I feel is important but what you take is personal. Honestly this comment really makes doing KZfaq worth it ☺️

Thanks for that. It’s what I take on most of the multi day hikes now and pretty happy with it. Just want to change for a nice quilt and think that’ll do me. In summer I do tend to use my Iceflame quilt as enough

Haha cheers Lee. Honestly that pi$$ pot is such a game changer I always take it. I’m really happy with the Zoleo. I’ll do a video on it soon when I’ve used a couple more features but it was awesome all week on my ML course as zero reception all week

Brilliant stuff, very useful as I am trying to get my kit lighter. I stopped using a tent now, I use a 3x3 DD tarp.

Glad you found it useful. I’ve never tried just a tarp but always fancied it. Did have a DD Tarp for 18mths and never used it so sold it. I should’ve bought the super light version as I would’ve had more opportunity to try it then. Maybe I’ll have to keep my eyes open. What configuration works best for you?

Cheers Daz. Yeah we can keep going lighter and lighter but gets to a stage where you’re losing features and accepting to cut a few grams here and there. I think I just need a decent quilt now and pretty happy with the setup

Nice setup there, intresting regarding the food, I've had it a couple of times now where I really just want to rest or get going so all the meals bar snacks have come back with me. Great job on the Cumbria Way, that was really one long last day there.

Cheers David. It’s taken a while to change and test gear to see what I’m happy with and think it’s pretty good at the moment. Yeah I tend to leave my pot if I’m not too bothered about a brew and save the space and weight. I guess it depends on the route and if you know you can buy food and drink en route then it’s worth just buying it as you go I think. Oh that last day was a killer day haha

Aah yeah cheers pal and know you’re a fellow Manc as follow your vids and we spoke about the C2C. Well done on that by the way too, great achievement. It’s awesome isn’t it. Definitely not about buying all expensive gear. I’m a bit of a gear head and had an used or tried a lot of it out there but that’s over time. It’s more about the ideas of things to take as gear is so personal to anyone. I’m sure if we both keep making good content and loving what we do it’ll happen. Maybe we should grab a camp one day 🤙🏼

Great idea and I’ll look to do something in the future as know it’s a tricky process if not familiar to it. Also about the additional mapping you can add to the watch too which is essential to view contours.

Very informative Kris, enjoying content of your channel. Any chance of doing review of your watch (garmin) or something similar. How you plot out routes and how you unload them day by day. And especially how navigate when out and about. How much detail does the watch display show (footpaths, trekking routes in remote areas etc) and how does it help to follow your precise route.

Thanks for the comment and I’ll be sure to look at that. A few people have asked so I’ll see what I can do and the best way to approach it as don’t really want to make a video just say behind the computer but I’ll have a think. Leave it with me. They’re awesome watches and I use mine for every hike and definitely some things people need to know to get the best out of them.

Brilliant video kris I've started following you a lot since taking up wild camping mainly. I'm certainly not new to the outdoors I'm in the lake's almost every weekend in the mountains be it hiking climbing and now for the last year wild camping I've never once thought of ticks!!! What tool do you have and do you get troubled with the little blighters much??

Sorry for the delay Dave I’ve had a little break for everything the last 4mths but back now. Awesome to have you on board. Luckily I’ve never had a tick but always take a tick remover with me. They’re just small cheap little tick tools that you can hook under a tick and twist to remove one…that’s how you need to go it. They literally cost pennies and weigh nothing so keep one with you. Just check your body at night especially if you’ve been in grass etc…as they can cause Lyme disease. If I know I’m going through thick ground I usually wear tights under shorts just to prevent any risk. So far so good

Really enjoying the channel Kris 👍🏻 I’m looking for a new bag - is yours the ice flames LT or EX one please? And one more if I may, will that do you for the heart of winter too or do you go with something else’s? I’m asking as I’ve been looking at the Rab Alpine range, but these ice flames bags have more down and a higher fp too…….. Thanks in advance mate, and good luck with the channel.

Cheers Steve I appreciate that. Mine is the Iceflame 20D so it’s a 2-3 season bag. For winter I have a different quilt and sleeping bag. I really fancy a nice quilt for winter at some stage but pretty pricey. Love quilts but also in Winter it’s great to have a full bag to wrap right up in it. For winter I do have another IceFlame LT14F sleeping bag I use for Winter which is on their website. Thanks Kris - I really appreciate that. I ended up ordering the Rab Alpine 600 for 3-4 season (it’s equivalent to a 14F bag I think(Rab sleep limit of -9, EN comfort limit of -12). Managed to pick it up for £200 after cash back (it’s duck down 650fp, so the down not as good as the IF LT but we’ll see how it does). 1050g. I ordered the ice flame quilt for summer and might layer the two when it’s really cold, or just opt for the Rab 800 instead. Not sure I’m brave enough to only use a quilt in freezing temps (although the UGQ ones can go to -12 apparently) Good luck with the channel mate 👍🏻

@SteveRiley-ch2rn cheers Steve. Sounds like you’ve made some great choices there. Like you say, you could always just double up and take the lightweight quilt with you too as they pack really small and they’re light and might do you in colder times. Just try it all and see if you like it

Aah brill cheers Matt glad you found it useful. Filmed this on my Sony A7iv. Need to start using this morning but mainly use this for my photographer and client videography work and literally never take it hiking. I go to hike and enjoy it and only ever use my phone for pics and GoPro or Insta360 X3 for footage. Maybe I should use it more hmmm haha

Cheers Dan. Aah yes they’re DCF bags. You can get much cheaper even just use ziplock bags but I like these. They’re really lightweight and tough too. Check out Wild Sky Gear on FB I’ve had loads from there. If you buy a few things you get a free wallet sized ones. That’s why I have a few of those as bought plenty in the past.

That flextail pump is aptly named. As well as using it for my air mattress I use it for my derriere mattress after the bidet! No towels needed.

Cheers and me too. Good to see kit and what works for different people but it’s all different for everyone I guess. I’ve tried and used a lot of gear and quite happy with my setup. I still want a new quilt which I’m planning to order soon for summer but apart from that don’t think I’d change anything

That's where I'm at at the moment. Think I've got the kit dialed in for CTC . Unsure on the One man trecking pole seirra designs high route or Nemo hornet 2 which will give me abit more room and semi free standing.. I have a one Tigris quilt which I love but no way to make a footbox if it gets about chilly. I also have a lightweight naturehike sleeping bag that can be unzipped all the way to make a quilt so it has a hood.. I'm on the look out for quilts but unsure what I want. Don't want to pay silly money for one I'm going to be using in July summer weather. It's a minefield with the quilt situation 🫣😂

Sounds like you’re in a similar position. Have you got any friends who’ve got any of those tents to give them a try first? I wanted a UGQ Bandit but jus pricey with import so looking at other options. Let me know what you decide to get

Oh no I mean I own both tents. Just not settled on which one to take is what I meant. Yeah the quilts are expensive aren't they. I'm tempted by the alpkit ones. Although the cheaper one is out of stock at the moment and the expensive one is pre order for 5th July. I'm hoping something crops up second hand on the selling sights

Aah got you…makes sense. I’ve got the 1P and 2P versions of the XMid but going to sell one. Probably keep the 1P just as it’s a little smaller for long distance hikes. Can’t justify both as just ordered a new tent box recently which comes in a couple of weeks so need to recoup some money. Enlightened equipment quilts looks a great alternative too. The UK side will import in from the US with no charges, it’s part of the service they offer
