When we go to the grocery store, we're used to checking all kinds of labels. From the expiration date to the calorie count. Now some doctors want you to look for another label - one that says no PFAS. Irish Kerry Gold butter is prized by many consumer reports for its grass-fed goodness. But what consumers may not have realized is that the grease-resistant wrapper contains per- or polyfuloroalkyl carbons, PFAS for short. This is a toxic artificial compound.

Seriously, what other reason could there be for the FDA not actually doing their job and fulfilling their mandate? There was a time when the world looked to the United States as leaders in so many areas, but now we're finding that we have to look to Europe for something as simple as food safety? So much has got to change and Washington needs to start looking after its citizen's basic welfare first and foremost.

When you consider the fact that tap water has over 85000 toxins. Somethings just can't be boiled out of water or treated with more chemicals. Just think about all the prescription drugs flushed down a toilet. Seafood is high in Mercury and Microplastics, since big agriculture has farmed ALL of the healthy minerals in food, out of the ground, (even healthy foods don't contain even 25% of what they had 50 years ago), they fix it by dumping more metals into the ground without any testing to confirm it makes a difference or if it's healthy, especially since Drugs and Healthcare is the biggest money making scam in American History. Do some real research with your eyes open with an open mind or you're just wasting time. Knowledge is POWER.

I remember, when trying to diet and eat healthy in the 1970s, we were trying to figure out what fructose was. Best answer we could find was that it was from fruit. Well, it did NOT say that it was from CORN. When I say we, it was my diet buddy and coworker. The FDA has been completely dishonest and harmful. All 3 letter agencies have got to be ditched. They are literally killing us!! You have GOT TO realize this, NOW. The worst ingredient I've recently found in food : sucralose, like Splenda. It's "allowed " in food and the FDA says it's a "non nutritive." No, it's indigestible and makes you feel sick all over and some baaad side effects! ( No, you DON'T have "exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. " - that's a lie from he11, so they can sell more pills. Wake up, good people! !) See Dr Axe and see Women's health website. FDA has to goooooo! Big pharma is killing us. They have to go, too. I realized this about sucralose by accident. I was sick and looking up an ingredient that was "sugar -free" in yogurt. I feel like that too, often, but what I'm doing is taking a mitigated approach. I ask a series of cascading questions whenever replacing something that's a major threat or that's used up and needs replacing anyway. Think of this as being like a Q/A organizational chart. 1. Is it something that can be replaced at all? Yes - keep asking questions. No - then don't worry about it. (Renters have to go through this step, homeowners do not.) 2a. Does it go in my mouth? Yes - it gets replaced. No - move that piece forward one place on this stupid "Q/A" gameboard. 2b. Do I breath it in (such as bug sprays, cleaners, etc)? Same thing. 2c. Does it touch my body or go on something that touches my body? Same thing. 3a. Does it pollute the outside environment just by existing at all? Same thing. 3b. Does it touch anything that touches my clothing? Same thing. 4. Was it manufactured? Same thing. It'll cost me thousands of dollars to replace everything, but it'll also probably take a decade or more to accomplish that, and those are dollars I would have (at least mostly) spent anyway, just on garbage that can make me sick or even kill me. I think it's worth the effort, so long as the old garbage is thrown out and not hoarded.

Did you know that employees of pharma and food-related companies are supposed to wait one year before joining the fed agency that oversaw their industry? The crisis -- this is too often ignored and before the Bush Cheney admin, there was a required 3 year wait. That wait makes it harder for companies to install its company loyalists in federal agencies in order to pass favourable regulations to that company -- or to kill regulations that benefit the average consumer American but at the expense of company profits. Demand that company employees wait 1 year before joining the government and help reduce corruption and save American lives. Yes, your vote and voice really do matter.

Also, it's the best tasting butter I've found. As far as fish goes, buy canned salmon instead of canned tuna. Salmon is safe to eat every day and can be prepared in the same ways as canned tuna. People eat way too much canned tuna in the US and tuna is one of the fish that has the highest level of mercury. The higher up the food chain the more mercury, because the fish absorbs mercury from the fish it eats.

I used to work in food industry formulating many kinds of foods. What I’d watch out more than natural flavors is the amount of salt and sugar being added to foods. To make products shelf stable, food needs to be either acidic, salty or sweet unless they’re considered canned food. In many cases natural flavors are extractives of spices or blends of seasonings and they’re only added at a tiny amount like below 1%. I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

Bought an organic coffee from Whole Foods last month without reading the label. Got home, read the label and it said contains chemicals that may cause cancer! I returned it the next day. Also bought condensed milk from Costco and I thought I read only “milk and cane sugar”. I have used one can of out 6, and was discussing it with my sister while reading the label I saw “ also contains Bioengineered material”. I was shocked how I missed that and threw the rest away. Sadly, we would never win because the entire system is corrupt and rotten to the core. The best we can do is stop eating the things that cause us harm. There is hope for those who are able to do it. I will be 66 in about a week, and use absolutely no pharmaceutical products, prescribed or over the counter for any reason whatsoever. I am healthier and stronger now than i was ten years ago. About a year and a half ago, i changed the way i ate. I began eating just one good meal per day, eating real whole foods and drastically limiting sugars, carbs, processed and fast 'foods'. I lost about 60 pounds of excess fluids and body fat in the first 2 - 3 months. I also reversed every chronic health condition that plagued me for decades! I was no longer obese. Gone was my fatty liver condition. The edema, or swelling in my feet and lower legs was gone. My cellulitis was gone. My occasional hypertension was gone. The frequent late night urination stopped. My COPD symptoms were gone, and i still smoke modestly. Imagine that. I also suffered with peripheral neuropathy in the feet. That was the most stubborn condition, but that has also finally subsided. My testosterone levels increased, and i stopped losing teeth. The teeth that remain are stronger and healthier. I doubt i will ever lose another tooth, and would bet the farm that my bones are also stronger. My hair and skin are better. It is like aging in reverse! I also do get exercise, but that had nothing to do with the weight loss. I do walking, yard work, squats, push ups and light to moderate weight training to name a few. I do these things to maintain strength and muscle mass. I have been trying to help others who want to lose weight and get healthier - whoever will listen that is.

What’s truthful? They did zero research into pfas. No mention what pfas actually are and how many chemicals are listed as pfas. 4700 chemicals are pfas, and yes they are in food packaging everywhere but the real issue is that 99% of americans have pfas in their bodies. This isn’t from food packaging either, pfas are in basically everyone’s drinking water and there is nothing anyone can or will do. All of this takes literally a 60 second google search to discover. But let’s drop a sensational headline and call ourselves journalists. You were no more informed from this than you were before and no actual journalism happened. Choosing packaging that say’s “no pfas” will make no difference to anyone. The whole segment was a red herring. And you ate it.

As a person with Crohn’s, I have to be very care of additives, preservatives and many ingredients in food. Years ago, my inflammation throughout my body was so bad I decided I was going to figure it out. First I stopped eating meat for 2 weeks-noticeable improvement Second-eliminated chips and starch snacks (my faves)-after a month, my so called diagnosed Fibromyalgia disappeared after years of struggles. Then I started identifying many other foods that caused the pain and inflammation. Originally I thought there was no rhyme or reason on what foods bothered me and which didn’t….until I did a deep drive study on ingredients. Our food is killing us and it’s a vicious cycle that no one cares about but the individual. The work I did for myself took a lot of time and education, but has made all the difference in the world in how I feel….until I became a big eater of sweets out of nowhere. That totally threw everything out of whack. Once I got that under control…all good again.

PFAS chemicals (it is a group of similar compounds, not just one chemical), due to their water--repelling qualities, are in many, many products that you use every day, and have used for decades. Anything waterproof (clothes, rain gear, plastics, vinyls, umbrellas), non-stick cookware, soaps and detergents, firefighting foam, and anything Teflon, has PFAS/PFOS compounds in it. It is this water-repelling property that makes these compounds so useful---and ubiquitous. Of course there are PFAS in your food: the chemicals are used to prevent your food from sticking to the machinery that makes it, your plastic utensils that you eat with, and your non-stick cookware that you cook with. .These compounds are everywhere. I am in the environmental field, and only now are regulatory gencies starting to look for these groups of chemicals called PFAS/PFOS, and guess what? They're several decades too late. They're everywhere, And due to their structure---they're loaded with fluorine atoms whose chemical bonds with other atoms are extremely strong--these chemicals don't degrade. Yup, we've put our foot in it this time. Enjoy the ride, folks.

This is why I've stated growing my food and raising chickens. To add something useful to consumers: ANY food that is oily that is wrapped in paper are coming in contact with PFAS. From Reese's peanut butter cups, to cupcake papers to fast food wrappers and so on. It's used to help keep oil from seeping into the wrapper and making the packaging look greasy. It's all over the place. As a young employee 30 years ago, I was sent to a food manufacturers convention to staff an exhibit booth. I remember seeing one vendor there who proudly sold all these flavorings and had them displayed in huge jars. That's where I learned about "Natural Flavors"... that those words are a copyrighted name of a product, NOT a generic adjective/noun describing a category of non-processed spices. Natural Flavors was the MOST disgusting-looking jar on the table. It was a bright, almost neon orangey-brown color that looked totally fake. I've tried to avoid it ever since, but don't have a whole lot of success.

Debora Henderson: PFAS chemicals are synthetic chemicals which don’t exist in nature. Before their manufacture started in late 1940s, no PFAS were present in the environment. Now they contaminate every corner of the globe and have been found in the blood of people and wildlife worldwide. PFOA stands for Perfluorooctanoic Acid. It is one chemical that belongs to the large family of over 4,500 fluorinated substances known as PFAS (Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). PFAS are extremely stable and can repel both grease and water making them extremely useful in a wide variety of products. Exposure to PFOA has been linked to six major health issues: kidney cancer, testicular cancer, thyroid disease, high cholesterol, ulcerative colitis, and pregnancy-induced hypertension. These links were found by the US C8 Science Panel, which is referenced in the film ‘Dark Waters’. Chemicals from the PFAS family have been linked to other health issues, including reduced response to vaccines and lower birth weights. In the EU, PFOA was classified as toxic to reproduction in 2017 and the restriction for PFOA and related substances entered into force in July 2020. PFOA and other PFAS chemicals are extremely persistent in the environment, thanks to a special carbon-fluorine bond. This specific carbon-fluorine bond is one of the strongest bonds in nature. As a result of this bond, PFAS chemicals do not break down easily and will persist in the environment for decades. This has earned PFAS the nickname the forever chemicals. This persistence is concerning because it means that current pollution from PFOA and other PFAS chemicals could build up and impact generations that are not even born yet. PFAS chemicals are also extremely mobile. They can pass easily through normal drinking water treatment facilities to contaminate drinking water and can build up in the edible parts of fruits and vegetables. Their mobility means that they have been found in every corner of the globe, including the Arctic and Antarctic. Though the impact of exposure to PFAS on wildlife is less studied, some PFAS have also been linked to negative impacts on the reproductive, hormonal and immunological systems in wildlife. PFOA is believed to be in the blood of 99% of humans. This figure comes from the US, however studies in the UK and around the world also show that almost everyone has chemicals from the PFAS family in their body. PFOA and other PFAS chemicals are present in our bodies because we are exposed to them daily through consumer products that contain PFAS (e.g. food packaging, non-stick cookware, cosmetics, furniture) and via environmental exposure (including from drinking water, indoor air, and certain foods). Some PFAS chemicals, including PFOA, are bioaccumulative. This means they can build up in the human body over time because they are absorbed but not excreted.

Home-made Ketchup (written on-the-fly, likely needs adjustments): Ensure everything you're going to use in this process is clean and germ/bug-free, following guidelines as outlined by the CDC (it's worth learning those, people)... Basic Ingredients: Peel and de-pulp your tomatoes (set the pulp aside and refrigerate to use for some other recipe), then boil the tomato "meats" in water for at least 3 minutes. Add vinegar, sugar or stevia (find some containing inulin, not dextrose), a small amount of ginger, add any other spices you like, then add some Italian Seasoning and a little salt (go easy on this, not much is needed per serving). Additional ingredients: If you're always using ketchup with relish or pickles, but need a lower sodium diet, then go ahead and add some dill weed, onion powder, and garlic powder (then skip the high sodium relish/pickles in your sandwiches, burgers, and hotdogs). If you always use mustard in these, but want to reduce the sodium more, then add a little mustard seed and a small amount of tumeric (careful, these are messy and they can stain clothing and skin; keep them out of your eyes and nose; wear PPE when handling them, and put down some wax paper on the counter or table where you'll be working). If you're trying to increase the fat in your diet (to lower the carbs), then reduce the water used for boiling and add some almond oil (canola has PFAS in it, sorry folks). If you feel it needs thickening, use FDA and USDA approved tapioca starch (high in nutrients) rather than corn products (but be careful not to over-heat/over-boil, or it becomes stringy and slimy). Cooking/Blending: Allow stove-top mixture to cool (stirring often if using tapioca starch), then blenderize and strain through a wire-mesh strainer, or just pulverize the mixture with an immersion blender (or put it in a VitaMix, etc). You'll want something that's very smooth and will pour from a pouring container. You'll need some kind of container - lots of plastic ones have undeclared PFAS in them. Lead-free glass is best (most metals will just get eaten through by the acidic nature of the vinegar). Use Ball canning jars if necessary, but don't try to store this outside of the refrigerator nor for long periods of time even inside it. Make smaller amounts, one jar at a time, and use up within a few days to prevent spoilage. The vinegar and salt will help it keep, but home-cooking is not without its perils; treat this the same way you would an opened jar of spaghetti sauce. Less is more, in this case. Come up with your own tomato (there are other kinds, too) ketchup recipes! Screw the manufacturers! Their stuff is all garbage anyway, so you're best off making it yourself, following excellent care/cleanliness, preparation, storage, and usage practices, so you know what's in it! Feel free to include corrections in the replies to this comment. I've made ketchup once before, about 15 years ago, but got lazy after that (my bad), so I'm posting this from memory. The Ball Blue Book had a recipe for it back then, so I made my own that way! My comment here is more based on the European Heinz ingredient label in the video, combined with what I remember from that time I made it using Ball's recipe. Why does corn-whatever matter? Why would I suggest stevia (using inulin instead of dextrose) instead of sugar (for those who like the taste of stevia)? Diabetes/pre-diabetes, insulin resistance, PCOS/PCOD, dysmenorrhea, extra-uterin-fibroids (benign), ovarian cysts, full hysterectomies... It starts with the simple-sugars in your diet, they screw with your hormones, and the next thing you know, you're sick from the birth control pills (if female) and you can't have kids (again, if you're female). Aside from the reproductive issues in women, I don't know the non-pancreatic related effects in men, if there are any. Anyway, simple sugars shouldn't "be used in moderation" or even "in small amounts." They shouldn't be used AT ALL. Simple sugars: Most items that are sweet (natural or fake) that you would normally drizzle, pour, or place on pancakes, waffles, or ice cream/cake/pie/cookies. Watch out for natural items with added fake sweetening agents such as dextrose (there are about 20 or so of them, find a list, print it out and keep it in your purse for shopping trips). Inulin is a natural fiber and is considered very healthy though. Honey and agave nectar, and many brands that include stevia (though not all), are not safe with regards to diabetes/pre-diabetes/etc. Sugar itself (in all its forms, and from all plant or other sources). Look this up under "How it's made: sugar" and you'll never want to touch sugar again anyway. Watch out for alternate-names for sugar and simple sugars (there are lists you can look up for those too). The bottom line is, manufacturers are a clusterf^ck, and really, the more you can get away from their garbage, the healthier you're going to be. Mind you, there's PFAS in the water and the rain itself, but some crops are more contaminated than others (there are lists you can look up for those too), and that's a global problem (so it's not "this brand is ok, that one isn't"). Flax, potatoes, rice (all forms, though brown is worse because of PFAS in the hulls), canola oil (but apparently not the other oils, that we know of yet)... Then there's the lead and cadmium in the sunflower seeds/oils/butters... Anyway, thanks to 3M and Dupont, and about 10 other (sorry, I don't know all their names yet) major PFAS-chemical producers/users/dumpers (they dump them in potable water sources and near farmlands, etc), we're all screwed to some degree, and it's a matter of "hit and miss" if you'll have cancer, developmental delays, birth defects, etc etc. Oh, also, PFAS cause chromosomal damage, so it's genuinely best not to reproduce if you can avoid it, at least until you can get tested for chromosomal damage (that testing needs to be freely available to everyone, paid for by those manufacturers who create, use, and/or dump PFAS in unsafe ways, IMHO). PFAS are a global issue, including in areas where there is no manufacturing done at all. They're in the water/rain, the soil, the fish (they go up the food chain), and they are cumulative in the body and do not have short half-lives. They have killed small children clear up through the elderly, and have been linked to Autism, Leukemia, Liver cancer, hormonal disruptions, heart disease, and so on. 99% of Americans have measurable levels of PFAS in our blood, and that's been true for generations now. We're all ticking time-bombs for one problem or another, especially in a country where we are reliant on manufactured products for basically everything we use for survival. The US Government (probably every government) needs to get this all completely cleaned up and then pay us all enough money (it could be earmarked for specific uses) to re-build our lives with safe/clean (dangerous chemical free) products, have safe/clean water to use, and the safe/clean items needed for hydroponic indoor gardens, along with instructions on how to do that successfully. We need easy-to-use online ordering filters for all the major online retailers, to help us locate products that don't contain any amount of PFAS, lead, cadmium, and other harmful chemicals/substances. We need the EPA to finish the job instead of being in bed with Corporate America, and we need food manufacturers to go above and beyond State and Federal regulations, both voluntarily and continually being subjected to multiple 3rd-party/disinterested testing for compliance, both in the food products and their packaging. We need at least phasing-out of all foods and food packaging that contain these harmful chemicals/substances, with a 1:1 ratio of these products being replaced with healthy and safe alternate versions. We need large and small retailers to comply with this - and we need this all to start YESTERDAY. PFAS and other harmful chemicals are the modern Love Canal and the most recent pandemic - they're just not spoken of much, and most people don't know even 10% of what they need to about them. One drop of PFAS in an Olympic sized pool can cause cancer. That's all I need to know; it's all the motivation I need. As I have the money, I'm replacing foods, shampoo/conditioner, mouthwash/toothpaste/dental flossers, antipersperant, feminine hygiene products, toilet paper, makeup, teflon containing products, bug sprays, ScotchGuard.. - anything containing PFAS in particular that touches or goes into my body. I have to do this a little at a time, but I'm getting it done, and that's the point. I've already resigned myself to knowing I will likely die of cancer because of nearly 5 decades of being inundated with PFAS, lead, cadmium, and more. My only hope is that I won't suffer as much on the way down, or that I can stave cancer off for a few extra years. My only salvation would be dying of something else first.

They use sugar in desserts and snacks, while we use corn syrup mostly, but sugar is used extensively as well. Sometimes we use several kinds of sugar in one product.
