What's Inside: 1/2" Air Impact Edition

In this video I tear down one of my favorite IR Thunder Guns 1/2" Impacts that I have had since the beginning of my career. The anvil has seen better times and needs replaced. Oddly enough Astro Tools saw this in one of my videos and kindly sent me a replacement for it. It's easy to see in the video I am no "Impact Expert," heck I even have to tear it apart when I am done to put the gaskets back in, in the right order. The good news is, the old gun gets to live to die another day. -Enjoy!

When I bought my first new air tools, I bought all IR, mostly because the older mechanic who was kind enough to mentor me had a full set of IR tools that he bought when he first got started decades ago and they all still worked. The company has been around forever and all the parts to rebuild them are still available. The only time I've had to crack any of them open is because an old shop that I used to work at used line oilers and filled them with Marvel Mystery Oil. The ingredients are a mystery to me, but they made all the seals in all my air tools swell to the point of no air getting past the triggers, so I had to replace the gaskets and o-rings in all of them. But that was about 13 years ago now, and they all still work beautifully after receiving daily beatings.

16:07 Hole offset does matter. It biases the power output on the rotor rotation. Hence why it has higher reverse torque.

Why do I have that odd feeling, THAT IMPACT DRIVERS, EVERYWHERE, ARE BEING DISMANTLED AT THIS VERY SECOND?? And in other news, AMAZON was overwhelmed with new orders for impact driver repair parts, just as the new year approached!! A spokesperson for AMAZON said that there has never been anything like this before, and the company has no explanation for this odd event! ;-)

I was going to comment about how brave you are to go beyond pulling out the things with the notch up, then you picked up the pliers and my hopes died and I doubted you for the very first time. Then there was all the unrestrained twisting and banging and the "beauty marks" as you called them. I asked myself if maybe Astro or whomever might restore the thing to impress us, your subs. The rest of your struggle with that armature(?) added nothing to our hopes until you were able to reinsert those fin thingies. Then, despite that captioned warning. It all went together and you restored my faith in South Main Auto and your unfailing auto-mechanical genius! I just wish I could afford to drive the thousand miles or so to have you attend to my new/old F-150. Life just isn't fair. Happy New Year and thanks for every time we see a video.

Have rebuilt this platform since the early 90s . That 3 piece gasket is starts as one pinched between the hammer housing and spacer that is pressed fit into the housing. The air vane cylinder is best left in when removing the rotor to keep the lower end plate aligned to the housing bore and will assist on reassembly. If you really wanted to wake this thing up remove the e clip from the rotor end plate remove the bearing lap both end plates with 300 grit on a flat surface to remove any grooves finish with a 600 grit. Then use a wheel cylinder hone to clean up the vane cylinder take the vanes to the 300 grit and lightly clean the seal surface. A couple drops of 10w30 on the bearings reassemble dry. Now you have to seat in the vanes WD40 with a straw applicator a light squirt into the air inlet. Hook up a regulated air line or or one with a tap. Plastic tie the trigger full open put it in a vice or lay it on the floor 40 psi or mid throttle let it rip 5 min in fwd then in reverse. Now the vanes are seated give a light dose of air tool oil 3 to 4 drops and continue to do that over oiling the tool will degrade the performance then grease the hammer push the drive into the tool grease the tool until the drive pushes forward then stop you can actually over do it and tool performance will suffer. Now your IR is better than new. 300 ft lbs now 400 ft lbs.

I still have my Campbell-Hausfield impact I bought at Walmart for $65 back in '01. NEVER oiled or greased the thing until just recently - never knew you were supposed to HAHAHA! Didn't know what that strange fitting was on the side until about 9 years ago, lol. Thing never let me down though! Can't believe it lived as long as it did with zero grease in it. Guess the factory actually put some in, and it was actual quality grease. It now lives in the back seat of my truck in case I ever get a flat - I've got a set of Viair air compressors in the bed. I used that impact daily for close to 10 years before I bought my IR 2135 TiMax - that one is now almost 9 years old, but I've kept up on the maintenance - she cost me just a bit more money than the CH unit. Haven't had either one apart yet - figure I've got another 10 years before that needs to happen. 😁 Ahh who cares where the gaskets go - it worked! 👍👍😊 Nice job! Set for another 20 years, at least. 😜

I worked for IR in Athens, PA back in the late 1980s to early 1990s. We shipped thousands of impacts every year and I always wondered, where the heck were they all going. Surely every mechanic and DIYer in the world already had one but we kept shipping. By the way...Eric, free running the tool doesn't tell you it is back together correctly; need to run a torque test as your final test. Enjoy your videos man!

IR 231. The god of the impacts Repaired these for yr’s. You must heat the shell slightly to get it out. Freezer the cylinder and bits & heat up case to reassemble.

For many years I had the IR 244 which is similar, runs a little slower but has a little more hitting power I believe, my anvil twisted off one day which rather proved the point that stuffing lots of air pressure into it gave it a lot of magic beans !. I ordered a new anvil and that portion of the tool is very easy to work with as I found out. Some years later the three case screws backed off with the vibration ( probably never get them out if loctite was put on them ) and air leaked past and lost power, figured out the issue but it had blown the gasket. Had to buy a rebuild kit just to get the gaskets but when I used the whole kit and took the motor apart to replace bearings and the motor vanes I discovered that the motor case was worn badly as in out of round in the area where the ports are and the only fix was a new motor case, up here in Canada that one part cost as much as you replacing your whole gun Eric. Needless to say I retired that gun as it was not worth pouring the money into and bought the composite IR and have been extremely happy with it in the few years I have owned it. I see a lot of comments about being so surprised about greasing these guns, well they are designed to be greased as the grease goes into the hammer/anvil end for that action through the hollow motor shaft passage way, the oil into the air tool opening lubricates the motor vanes. I had even bought the mini grease gun and the special grease from IR way back with that IR 244 and greased and oiled it often, seems the only way to give those tools enough oil for the motor to live the longest life is by having an oil injector/mister into the air line but then that shops air line is no good for blowing straight air or inflating tires but that. Excellent real life tear down video of a well used/abused tool !

5:10 That looks very familiar to me as at one time I serviced vacuum pumps. Rebuilding is a new set of vanes and polishing the rotor on a lathe with wet / dry 600 grit.
