As a wheelchair user myself, i think this is pretty cool! Nothing bums me out more than when i go to like Road America n see those racing sims there n never being able 2 hop on n give one a go.... i've been doing online racing forever but have to use a xbox controller cuz i dont have the space or $ to buy a proper wheel setup and mod it for me to properly use it. So even tho i'll never get to use one of your sims, it's cool to know this stuff exists out there. I've wanted to give a go in a proper sim for so long.. or even try some kart racing. Been in a chair for 37 of my 39 years on this earth, T4 para.. n i know the limits of my balance n stuff n so i've been too scared to try n get into real life racing, and every kart place i've contacted all say they dont have stuff for me to use. I'd have to buy my own. N like i said, when u have limited funds n stuff, it's hard to just spend a bunch of $ on something u are unsure if u can use properly so u end up doing nothing. lol. Unless u have someone around who can help point u or guide u in the right directions n carry out ur passions.. In our world we have to avoid the people that keep telling us "no, u cant do that" n seek out the people who are like "Hmm... i'm not sure? But i think that's doable, let's give it a go n find out!"

Speaking as someone with spinal injury it is one of the big grips that getting this tech for sim racing is not easy. Certainly not to this level. Lot use wheels with clutch paddles due to them being progressive, but bespoke wheels designed like this are impossible to find far as I've seen. Maybe nag team Brit or Vesaro about doing a wheel for that market. :)
@Zenmaestr0
@Zenmaestr0 3 жыл бұрын
It looks like it's an off-the-shelf Fanatec Formula V2 wheel rim with the APM kit attached to it for the analogue throttle and brake, with an adapter to whatever's under the shroud.
@hansdietrich83
@hansdietrich83 3 жыл бұрын
It looks like it would be relativly easy to custom build, if you have a 3D printer. I guess a Fanatec McLaren GT3 wheel would be quite simple to mod to change the hand clutch pedals to gas and break. For gears, it already has the thumb buttons on the top left and right and you could easily take out the original shift pedals. Edit: If you want help with a diy custom solution, I'd love to help
@blackknight1013
@blackknight1013 3 жыл бұрын
@@hansdietrich83 Already said that is solution many have used/tried. The hand clutches do work for this but can be awkward as hell as soon as you in a corner with wheel turned. Trying to trail brake or get ack on gas can be a chore with those small paddles low down. The full size ones they are using in this sim rig are more like you'd expect in real ca and far easy to reach and use regardless of wheel position. Plus something designed to do a job is always better than something you co-opt to do it. I may contact them and see what exactly they have and if they made the wheel parts or if Vesaro did all the work, as it's their cockpit. P.S. May let you know about that offer of help as building it myself is not an easy task really if it comes to that.

@@blackknight1013 Have you considered using a flight-sim yoke controller, and mapping the pitch controls (push/pull) to accelerate and brake? I haven't tried it myself, but I'm considering it (I already have the yoke). (note: this would almost certainly mean no force feedback)
@chrissugg968
@chrissugg968 3 жыл бұрын
I was thinking it's really weird that the upshift and downshift are reversed, but it makes perfect sense that you don't want to be trying to accelerate and shift up, or brake and downshift with the same hand.
@cradle2resurrection

This looks a potentially hilarious thing to try on a sim rig, flipping the hand/feet controls - map the left/right turning to the brake and the accelerator; Use the steering wheel left/right as a brake/accelerator. You should give it a go on one of your streams, Jimmy!

We need more options for hand controls in sim racing. The limited (and expensive) options are the single thing preventing from diving deeper into it and being stuck on a gamepad with my physical disability is a large stumbling block. The options that exist for hand controls right now are a godsend nonetheless (if only I could afford them).

You should look into 3D printed gamepad wheel mods. I used one for ages until I got a wheel and pedals. Not much wheel rotation but more precise than a gamepad stick. I printed mine myself, but they're sold online too.

You know what this reminds me of? Sim racing, and I mean that as a very positive thing. The biggest strength of sim racing is that it makes motorsport and competitive racing available to so many more people than would otherwise be possible, and this amazing team does the same; enabling people to go racing who would otherwise be unable to. I love it so much, and these sort of innovations are just the sort of things that make racing better for everyone.

Throttle and brake were integrated in the wheel, just like here. He wasn't a slow guy either. He finished the race somewhere in the middle. I literally took my hat off for that guy. Just a little feel good story: All the way back in 2002, danish racing driver Jason Watt had been involved in a motorcycle accident that paralyzed him from the chest down, and through sheer determination he wanted to race again, so in 2002 he partnered with Peugeot, and he was given a completely handdriven car, with a few extra bits to make it work. The other drivers were furious about some of the tech, as it was technically not legal, but they allowed it on the basics of "Well, nothing prevents you from putting the same system in YOUR cars! You just need to drive with handcontroles alone too!" So he got the go ahead for the season, and managed to become champion!

I am sure the past history of joypads, (and other strange controllers) in the Sim world must help. But onces again a great video, and great to see and learn more about Team Brit. Jimmy you really are making me fall back in love with motosport. Feels like going full circle and back to how it use to feel watching racing when i was a kid.

I used to do this on the Steam controller with gyro steering,reverse gear up and down positions,it feels natural and great after a while. It’s better that way to use brake and gas triggers without getting your fingers in a game of Twister lol.

Awesome thia team does this! But I'm kind of surprised the brake padel isn't a loadcell thing. Might have a reason tho.

The gear shift situation is how I play racing games on controller, up is left bumper. (And down is right, obviously.) That way you're not trying to shift fingers around or using the triggers with your middle finger, which isn't as precise as your index finger.

I had a coworker who was in a wheelchair and he eventually got a car with hand controls ( it was an automatic because that helps too obviously, no gears to worry about ) But the system was extremely rudimentary and very unreliable especially the throttle part. The civilian market needs some help. I think as more and more cars go to fully electric throttle/brakes, disabled people will have an easier time getting reliable systems because you just plug into the ECU and control stuff from there rather than having to worry about hydraulic systems and so on. To be fully honest I would like a system like that too if that was an option from the manufacturer and I don't even have leg problems... I have never been truly comfortable driving a car the way you have to keep your legs on pedals no matter what I try with sitting position

A similar experience is driving a manual for 20 years, then going to a auto, the BIG tip i got was to tuck your 'clutch' foot under the seat, I love muscle memory things, i remember watching minecraft many many years ago and could understand when people who are hosting, whilst they are talking and doing nothing they are pressing buttons and moving around, later found out it was for muscle memory

You can see how it'd take time to learn turning the wheel whilst smoothly operating the brakes and throttle at the same time. But it does look do-able. Another great RL video, Jimmer.

I was watching your race this last weekend and the announcer mentioned them. I thought it was really cool idea, kinda fit in with having a KZfaq sim racer in a Praga. Sad I didn’t get to see more because of their mechanical issues. I hope they can get those fixed and watch some good racing with you and Brit car.
