I grew up in Manhattan, and in grade school, the 4th grade to be specific, Gwen Verdons' daughter sat next to me and behind me was Frank Giffords' son. One of my friends, Peter Gelb', who is now General Manager of the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, his father Arthur Gelb, was Managing editor for the New York Times, and our whole class for Social Studies received the paper daily. Of course as a kid I was oblivious to the fame of their parents.

Gwen had been in _Sweet Charity_ for four months. Pretty awesome. She did lose out on that Tony the next month though. Angela Lansbury. _Mame._ It was quite a year for plays, in my opinion. Rosemary Harris in _Lion in Winter,_ Glenda Jackson in _Marat/Sade._ Jackson's first Broadway outing and first Tony nomination. She didn't actually win one until 2018, and now she'll be playing _King Lear._ Time flies.

1966: an amazing year for Broadway shows. “Sweet Charity.” “Cabaret.” “Mame.” “Superman.” Gwen had a long and amazing musical career, assisted in some instances by her husband, another amazing dancer [turned director] by the name of Bob Fosse. “Sweet Charity” ’s lyricist was another amazing talent - “Amazing” seems to be my adjective of the day” - by the name of Dorothy Fields, the first woman to ever win an Oscar for writing the best movie song of a year. The year in her case was 1936 and the song was, yes, the amazing “The Way You Look Tonight.” Frankly, I have a hard time picturing Gwen in “Sweet Charity.” She seems a little too, you know, mature for it. Fortunately, some of her numbers in "Sweet Charity" got videotaped in color; turns out she was indeed amazing.

People forget that for 2/3's of the 20th century and much of the 19th century there was very little legal gambling in the United States. When New Hampshire introduced it's lottery in 1964 there was only place in the U.S. for casino gambling (Nevada) and a handful of horse racing and dog racing tracks. There were some poker clubs in Gardenia, CA. And there was Jai alai in Florida. Any others?

John references the role of Gov. John King of NH in establishing the lottery. He did, but he also played a huge role (unintentionally) in creating the modern Democratic Party and its nominating process for President. King was governor for 3 two-year terms, 1963 to 1969. In his last year in office, NH held the famous 1968 NH primary, which LBJ, a very powerful President, was strongly favored to win against Eugene McCarthy. These were the days when a presidential candidate like McCarthy could spend one day raising all the money he needed for his campaign by calling 8 millionaires and then spend the remainder of his time persuading voters in a small state like NH. King was a strong supporter of both the Vietnam War and LBJ at a time when the Democratic Party was beginning to split in a way with repercussions to this day. King saw that McCarthy was gaining on LBJ and famously said that a vote for the Minnesota senator, whom he called "the appeaser" would be "greeted with cheers in Hanoi." McCarthy shocked the world by nearly beating LBJ, who soon afterward announced he would not seek another term. After McCarthy did all the hard work, then RFK decided to enter the race himself in that terrible year of violence. The irony of King's comment is that all the political science research shows that nearly all NH voters who voted for McCarthy were not in favor of appeasement and peace. They were hawks, very unhappy with LBJ for fighting a war in a way that he and they knew could not be won, and they showed their anger by voting for someone else, and in fact, drove LBJ out of office. I remember one professor who read the research who said that these voters voted as though they were voting for Senator Joe McCarthy, not Senator Gene McCarthy (for some of them, this was probably literally true!). King's comment obviously backfired and did not do his career or the Democratic Party any good.

Bennett's Random Factoids come through again! The rubber factory didn't do much for him in Game 1, but he pulled out a last-minute win with the lottery! I was surprised to hear that NH had the first state lottery. They must all have one now, right? Except maybe Utah?

44 U.S. states have state lotteries as of right now (Feb. 2015) plus three U.S. territories. States without lotteries include, Nevada (they wouldn't want to offend all those privately owned gambling establishments), Alaska, Hawaii, and, for citing religious objections, Mississippi, Alabama, and Utah. The three U.S. territories with an official lottery are Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the District of Columbia. Apparently, Alaska and Hawaii aren't worried about their residents spending their funds driving to neighboring states to buy lottery tickets and Alaskans can't readily drive to some place in British Columbia to buy provincial lottery tickets there given the distances involved.

norelco pc I think...but I am not sure that in the 1965-66 season on CBS that the only black and white sitcoms were DVD, The Munsters and The Smothers Brothers. All or almost all of the rest were in color. DVD should have been (it was a highly rated, "adult" series) but maybe Reiner knew it was the last year for him and didn't want to pay the extra costs for color (or I guess that would have been Danny Thomas and Sheldon Leonard, huh?). Or maybe they wanted to keep the five years consistently B&W (unlike the hodge podge of "The Joey Bishop Show" which was silly.

NBC's parent company, RCA, made color TV sets and for many years dominated that market. The other networks were not affiliated with a color TV set maker. ABC and CBS were reluctant to create programming that would increase the profits of a competitor. Plus ABC's pockets weren't very deep at that time.

Vahan tells us that this show was taped just prior to Pamela Mason's live appearance on April 3. Goodson and Todman could scarcely have fired her between the taping and the broadcast, but I'll bet the idea entered their minds anyway. In any case, this seems to have been her first try at being a panelist, not her second. I was hoping that John would have just answered "Yes" when she asked the mystery guest "Are you a man or a woman?" There's nothing wrong with that as a question; it can be answered "Yes" by an adult and "No" by a child.

Not to mention that Bennett would have either made the pun about "making a mountain out of a mohel" or the one about "mohels only working for tips."

Bennett said most people mispronounce flaccid as "flassid" and that the correct pronunciation is "flakkid", but I've looked it up and both pronunciations are acceptable. For a guy that publishes a dictionary he sure seems to regularly make a lot of mistakes when it comes to words.

I have NEVER heard anyone pronounce the word with a hard K sound. Never. Maybe that was once a correct pronunciation, and maybe the dictionary still says it's an acceptable alternative, but I think you would be looked at as a lunatic if you pronounced it as "flakkid" today!

What's My Line? I agree. I'd never heard anyone pronounce it that way either and that's what prompted me to look it up. I also agree that you'd be looked at as an uneducated moron if you pronounced with a "k" sound.

+Jeff Vaughn Nonetheless in 1966 there was only one acceptable pronunciation. I believe the American Heritage Dictionary was the first to accept "flassid" about 15 or so yrs ago. Grammarians have fought this pronunciation as it goes against the rule of a hard k sound when you have a double c preceded by a vowel. Check out the book There is no Zoo in Zoology: and Other Beastly Mispronunciations by Charles Harrington Elster.

Barry Kendrick Okay, but "acceptable" isn't defined exclusively by what's listed in one single dictionary, assuming what you cited is even accurate. It's unthinkable to me that the ONLY acceptable pronunciation listed in a major dictionary was with a hard K sound as of just 15 years ago. I'm 43 years old, "flaccid" is not a word I've only just learned, and as I've said, I've NEVER heard it pronounced that way in my life. There are a billion and one violations of phonetic pronunciation rules in english. This is just one of them.

+What's My Line? When I said "in 1966 there was only one acceptable pronunciation" I meant exactly what I said: there was no dictionary printed then or previously that accepted that pronunciation. Its common mispronunciation has led to the acceptance of same. Perhaps some dictionarys have held the line-I don't know. I recall my shock that it was acceptable in the American Heritage Dictionary. I recall a friend of mine back around 1990 getting quite out of joint when I corrected him on this point; he was very proud of his new dictionary & when it supported me, he was stone mad! He argued much as you have-he'd used it his entire life, etc. But he was still wrong! I mentioned the book There is no Zoo in Zoology as it discusses this word.

It wasn't Bennett's place to say anything to Tony and he has done that, or similar things before, to others. He likes to have time to spout some bit of nonsense at the end of the programme. Tony was collecting himself I believe and hoping to come up with a good question to ask. I notice he sometimes does take a second or two to think.

Near the end of the 1st segment they completely skipped James Mason's wife and went to Bennett to ask a question. I guess they figured that she was doing such a lousy job they just wanted to skip over her.

It was extraordinarily disrespectful for Bennett to jump in and skip over her turn, and then to go to Tony next. I have never seen that in any other WML episode. Very noticeable given the normal high level of politeness and etiquette shown (except for Bennett blurting things out out of turn, which he did regularly). I honestly believe that if she had been a man, it would not have happened although it is impossible to prove.

preppy socks Oh come on, he was just one question away from saying 'are you...." which they often do out of turn. Unfortunately he was wrong with the enquiry about the name of the product and that stole his thunder. The mistake THEN was that it went to Tony. Bennett wasn't to blame.

The crease on the side is bald. Meanwhile the line on the top appears to delineate a band of hair of slightly differing colour to the other. It mut hve been a big hassle all that messing on. Nowadays he's have it all shaved off and grow a goatee. Much easier.
