Thank you!!! The Thunder Shot is my favorite of them as it was one I vividly remember from the old RC magazine ads and articles. and I really thought it looked awesome. It is one of the few I don't drive and the only one I have never driven. I do have to credit Tamiya base for all the date details for them as there is no way I could keep all that straight!! My head is too full of other useless knowledge and song lyrics from the 80s and 90s for all that!!

Wowe bro! Your knowlage on these is impressive. I’m not in love with the Dragon style yet. Never seen one up close to have it grow on me. I really opened my eye when you shared that pic of the Terra Scortcher. Now that thing looked awesome to me. I’m sure though, if I saw a Dragon up close I would probably grow to like it! From what I’ve seen on many channels, they’ll surprise you at the track! Awesome history lesson brother! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Robby, I have to credit TamiyaBase for providing all the dates for them as there is no way I can keep all those straight!! The Dragons are not for everyone as they are very unique but I have found myself drawn to the unique and quirky ones in the last year or so much more than ever before. I agree the Terra Scorcher is a really cool one and I plan on grabbing on soon. I probably jinxed myself with the video and they will not be available for the next few years!! LOL!! They do drive very well and the only mine suffer is from a lack of grip on my track. The tires on the "Lightning Dragon" really hook up and get it around the track in a hurry!! I am sure you will see more of that one soon as I need to get the rear sway bar on it and out for some track time very soon!

Definitely a classic 80’s styling for me every time I see them. It’s those wheels 😂. I just ordered a thunder dragon as it’s my favorite funky one of that lineup. 2nd to the terra scorcher which to me looks like it belongs in a different series all together. It’s a far superior model as others have mentioned.

I think until you get them in your hands they look odd and are harder to appreciate. Once you build and drive them I think most people fall for them. I enjoy the odd looks of them and they fall into that love it or hate it category. I feel they fall into the Striker and the Sonic Fighter line of odd. I get it, they are some of the more unique bodies of the Tamiya lineup and are usually a love it or hate type of thing. Once you build one and drive it you will see why I fell in love with them! They drive really well and look much better in person. The great thing is the bodies are easily swapped around if you decide you are still not a fan of what you got you can just find a body shell to swap out and try another look!

That's a good little history lesson there, very interesting, especially the development from the old Hotshot onto these, that's good knowledge! These bodies don't really appeal to me, but then again, I never seen them in real life, so that might change it. I did watch some Manga videos sometime back in the 90'ies, good fun! One thing I am actually completely crazy about on these is the wheels! I really need to get me a set of these wheels, I am certain they will look awesome on my Top Force or something!
@AddamsPlayground

Thank you, you are very welcome! I was not sure about them either until I got one and then I wanted them all!! They really do drive great and all are a quick build since the bodies are pre-painted which normally I don't care for but masking off those canopies would be a pain in the rear!! I do like the wheels but not many tires fit on them so you are kind of stuck with the spike tires. For general bashing about thy work fine but for my track I struggle with them hooking up.

The Thunder shot is a great looking car. I remember seeing it in the magazines back in the day and being drawn to it for the kind of jet fighter style of it and the aggressive 4wd look of it!! I think the fire dragon is usually most folks top pick, that or the thunder dragon. It was a comic series in the Coro Coro magazines, I think it was called Astro Boy but I am not 100% sure. All of the Dragon have the Coro Coro logo on them and the little cartoon dragon. The wing is another one of those love it or hate it things I think. I don't ever remember it being on any of them I saw back in the day so it seems odd to me. Great ThunderShot family collection you have there and thanks for sharing! Like you, I chose not to put on that optional rear wing on my TS. Also, didn’t think much of the manga inspired shells back in the day but they have certainly grown on me. Tamiya was trying to tap on a younger fanbase when they created these as well as the now crazily popular mini4wd. They realized that they were loosing touch with younger kids cos their products were in danger of becoming too serious and grown up.
@AddamsPlayground
@AddamsPlayground Жыл бұрын
Thanks! I can see where they would be targeting the younger crowd with the dragons for sure. I have watched videos of the little mini 4wds and they look like they can be fun but I think I would get bored of them quickly and just be buying them to collect all of them which would b awful as it seems there are tons of them!!! They are not very popular in the US yet mostly I think because they are hard to find, not very many places carry them or the parts.
@Toystheyrenot
@Toystheyrenot Жыл бұрын
@@AddamsPlayground yes. I think the mini 4wd is kinda boring too. Think the fun is just being obsessive about nodding them for high speed. I enjoy slot cars as theres still some form of control over the cars but not the mini 4wds. Interestingly, Tamiya also made slot cars back in the day.
@AddamsPlayground
@AddamsPlayground Жыл бұрын
@@Toystheyrenot it is probably way cheaper and more profitable to make them this way than as slot cars. That and they seem easy enough for all ages to get it on the action. I love the Thunder Dragon! The Saint Dragon is just weird enough to be ugly but not weird enough to be awesome. It is like an incomplete design. I am on the fence with the Fire Dragon. The same goes for the Thunder Shot and the Terra Scorcher. From some angles they look really cool...from other angles, not so much. The wrap around wing on the TS is pretty awesome though!
@AddamsPlayground
@AddamsPlayground Жыл бұрын
I totally get it, all of the designs are pretty far out there! I think of the dragon car the TD and FD are usually neck in neck for favorites and the SD is always in the rear. I think for two reason, like you said it seem oddly incomplete, there is too much blank white space on it and the other is this was not released prior so there is no history or connection to it from yesteryear. I love them all and and have myself full embracing the quirkier side of the Tamiya line up. Things like the Striker and the Sonic Fighter and all the other experimental body designs they have done I used to not like I now find oddly interesting and want. The only one I do not like is the new TD4, I despise that car for both it looks and the crappy way they designed it and released it with all the issues. but that is a whole other rant!!!

@@AddamsPlayground The funny thing is I really like the TD4. I like it because it is so different. I would love one but I cannot justify the nearly $500CDN. I almost want to get a Saint Dragon so I can try to make it look good.
@AddamsPlayground
@AddamsPlayground Жыл бұрын
@@canuckchuck8836 I honestly think it just needs a few more decals on it and it would look much better, there its too much empty white space on it! I was just turned off on the TD4 but the bubbly body, I am not a fan of the tiny fenders and I really hated the fact there seemed to be so many issues with it. You pretty much have to buy there upgraded diff nuts, the front axle issues, the slipper clutch as an expensive upgrade, the very odd (I say stupid) choice to design the car around a dated battery design and have to remove parts of the car to change the battery. If they had designed it around a shorty lipo pack and stuck it crossways in the chassis it would have been a much better design and I would rather buy a battery than take apart the car every time. the forced upgrades also annoys me especially for the inflated prices they charge for their option parts (complete rip off and I avoid buying them at all costs). Ok, annoyed rant over. I appreciate their attempt but view it as a fail one. The TD2 is much better in my opinion and may get one in the future but it still has some of the inherent flaws. Once an after market company makes the parts to fix them I will get one and buy their parts. LOL

Hey interesting roundup Addam. I haven't got any of these but I have got a Terra Scorcher to build. I sort of knew that these Dragon cars were unusual because they were from Japanese comics but I can't find any images from the comic with the cars in. Have you seen any?

I think the Terra Scorcher is the best of them as it comes with the most features. I am not sure why I have been dragging my feet in getting one!?! The Coro Coro magazine featured comics in them staring Radicon or more commonly referred to as RC Boy an in them he drove some of the cars. I have never read any of them as they are only printed in Japanese but have seen images. If you search for "Manga Radicon Boy vol.16" you will see the Saint Dragon drawn on the cover with him and then the full lineup of the cars one the bottom of the cover.

I like the look of the cars because they are unique. I was glad to learn the source of the design. I wondered if it came from a comic book background. The fact that the motor sits in front of the rear wheels makes them more like the newer designed buggies. I have always wondered about the prop shaft. It's much thinner than in some of the other Tamiya kits. Will that system hold up if you put in a hotter motor?
@AddamsPlayground
@AddamsPlayground Жыл бұрын
I think most folks that run a more powerful motor than the sport tuned will opt to do the driveshaft upgrade. You can upgrade the drive shaft but it takes a few parts. You need the Hot Shot prop shaft drive cups and a TT02 aluminum driveshaft and once that is done you don't have to worry about the wire one going out. The wire one can handle the power usually but it will bow under hard loads and at speed will cause a lot of vibrations and could potentially bend it. Most it makes a lot of noise and vibrations from what I have heard. But the upgrade is not terribly expensive given you can find the prop shaft cups!

Well that stinks but you are not alone, many folks have made that same mistake! Thankfully I never have done that but I have come close! They are fun runners and after some scuffs and scratches you can peel it and all new again!

These have never really been on my radar. They don't really do it for me.. Probably a good thing or my build pile would be much bigger 🤣

I get it, they are totally a take it or leave it body design. You should get at least one of them to experience the build and drive! I really enjoy the way they drive!! Not trying to increase the build pile but if you find it a little thin then may be check one of them out!

Not sure how I feel about monoshocks
@AddamsPlayground
@AddamsPlayground Жыл бұрын
They look like they would not do well at all but work just as well as the dual shocks do! It is a little different than the normal but there have been a few models that came with the mono shock up front. I dig it as it gives them a really sleek look from the sides. I agree that all of them are very unique and certainly not going to appeal to everyone but once i got my hands on one and drove it I just fell in love the way the drive and the quirky looks as well!
