In this episode of Technically Speaking we take a closer look at what is arguably Nissan's finest engine series - the mighty RB.
Their popularity has been on a continual upward spiral since the mid 1990s but the RBs are not without their flaws. That's why we've invited a special guest to our studio to cover the DOs and DON'Ts of an RB build.
Tell us what engine you would like us to do next!

Thank you for mentioning the Australia Touring Car Series, most other videos I've watched on KZfaq don't mention the ATCC when talking about the R32 "Godzilla" GTR. More than the Japanese series it was in the Australian series and it's domination against the best from Australia and Europe where the GTR really made it's mark internationally, and eventually lead to the demise of Group A Touring Cars. And of course, it received it's name "Godzilla" from Down Under as well.

People do forget when they are building RB's, to put a integrated main-cap brace into it to avoid the block cracking, and they just crank up more power and end up dumbfounded when it inevitably cracks from load.

500kw on stock bottom end.......lol, my block was worn out with 380kw in no time, circuit work will do that. The crank flexes and wears bearing and ultimately the block. RB engine harmonics are also a serious issue, this is why oil pumps break and crank noses break, it isn't just RB's, all inline 6's suffer from poor secondary vibration issues. This point is hardly ever mentioned with inline 6's and is one of its biggest problems and understand this is important and how it can wreak havoc if not mitigated and checked. My RB 28 broke after a few years of racing time attack too, the crank nose broke, this was on a full HKS built engine with nearly everything done to it for reliability, the secondary imbalances catch up with you in the end. Saying that drag cars will crack the block before a track car is laughable, the loads on a circuit are continuous for up to 20 minutes at a time and are experiencing harmonic imbalances for long periods of time. For me the RB is not really an engine I like that much anymore, they are very heavy, too long for packaging in a lot of cars, and In fact inline 6's are not really a good engine for circuit work or making a circuit car fast all together. The RB was a good engine overall, it achieved great things, but race cars have evolved significantly since the Bathurst. Drag racing is one thing, but the balance of a circuit car is a whole different ball game. One of the biggest issues when approaching 400kw and over is the use of twin turbos. I ran 500kwatw with GTX2863's, they were fantastic for response, annihilated any single turbo, even the EFR Borg series, but it came at a high cost, engine heat. It isn't from radiant heat issues as much as it is form having small rear housings so the exhaust can't get out as well, and the increase boost levels to compensate for reduced LPM flow rates of twin turbos. I was running 33psi and the reason why you can use a single turbo at 22-24 psi and achieve the same power level is because the turbo has a higher capacity (LPM), and when the inlet valve opens, it does not have such a drastic pressure drop as the piston draws downward (It hurts even more when using higher overlap cams), sadly overcompensating for lower flow rates, means increasing turbo pressure and thus inducing a lot of extra heat from increased pressures, this is by far the most important reason for changing to a single turbo over anything else. If doing circuit work I can't stress enough for the use of an engine oil coolers and competition radiators and the best inter-cooler you can find, at-least for twin turbos RB's, but the selection of a good single turbo like an EFR8374 or 9180 would be one of the first things to consider if looking at keeping it nice and cool for a circuit car. A steel crank, or crank girdle is a must upgrade for pushing a track car to these levels for long term reliability. The blocks crack because of weak cranks first, then harmonics second, crank girdles are great keeping stock cranks straight, but realistically a billet crank is the answer (maybe a girdle as well if you want bullet proof). Secondary harmonics ? Well that is a very hard thing to chase and cure and unless you have access to lots of vibrational analysis gear, it is a little bit of calculated guess work. Fluid viscous dampers can def help over vulcanized rubber variants and looking at lightened flywheels and clutch assemblies also helps a lot too, that is about all we can do.

So you are saying it would be well worth the $2500 to install an Integrated Main Cap Brace like the one presented near the end of this video? Most of the issues you mentioned would be eliminated with a brace, since it eliminates the twisting that cause most of the failures you mentioned, or am I wrong in my thinking?

@@JJ_ExMachina no you are definitely right about the brace from my experience, but if you had the billet crank and brace it would be very strong indeed for many years. IMO, crank brace girdles are very underrated, they are integral at keeping long engines very rigid and do improve engine rigidity quite well from what I have seen.

Question, in terms of engine heat using water injection or water meth injection , would it not help the heat situation by cooling intake temps drastically ?

Just to get an RB here in the States, it has to be imported from Japan, and it's pretty pricey. That bottom end brace is very much the future of high performance engine block building. Love the series and history.

R32 actually had around 300+ hp out the factory. They just couldn't reveal actual hp because of the gentleman's agreement in Japan amongst car manufacturers.

The Holden VL calis turbo was such an amazing car. It looked good & was fast. It was so damn good , the Australian engineers had to lower the engine below the radiator to ensure it would over heat & warp the alloy head to ensure it needed repairs to continue Holden's reputation of making junk as part of there company policy , in which to this day was responsible for customers leaving the brand to find better products.

Any one put RB26 head on RB25det block? I prefer the smaller stroke to bore ratio. A custom Billet RB32-34det that has same stroke/bore ratio of RB25, or even RB20 would be NUTS! Ever heard an RB25det with top shelf dump pipe and top spec, professionally configured full exhaust system? Beats the shit outta 99% of RB26’s I say we start a company that manufactures the turbo barra engine and exports them to foreign markets for reasonable price. Be hard to meet demand.... Imagine aftermarket sector for that engine if USA got their hands on it. They would be in EVERYTHING from skylines to 4WD’s to drift cars to boats even. Conversion kits and parts would be cheap as dirt. Who’s in? Lol

Problem with the oil pump gears is the stupid drive nissan used because it is cheap to machine. It makes the gear thin in 2 spots and when a crack forms there say bye bye to your engine. 2JZ has a proper spline on the oil pump drive..You don't know how many people want to punch that person responsible for this stupid decision. Same thing on the CA18 and SR20 oil pump..
