@@robertmailhos8159 Pure facts my friend, I'm still using my Poulan Pro 3 and 1 self propelled with the 6.75hp quantum engine from 2001. I maintain all of my equipment and only run non ethanol in all of it. My rider is a 1991 Dynamark it still runs and cuts like new. All my 2 strokes I only use Red Armor. Bills 100% correct about maintenance, do the proper repairs and your equipment will last as long as you need it too.

You are right about the maintenance. I bought a garage sale mower with a Brigg's engine 35 years ago and it still fires up and does a great job. Most don't know how to maintain but with KZfaq anyone can give it a try. Not sure what I will do when it craps out on me. Very good video. Thanks. Stevo

My wife and I were married and bought our first house in 1996. Needed to by a lawnmower. Go to Home Depot and look at mowers. I've always been a big fan of Honda mowers. Bought one. Happened to be Father's Day. Still use it but light usage. We retired and moved to the country. Had to buy a Airenes Zero Turn because we have three acres to mow. But we still use the Honda in places a 52" deck can't reach. But agree, maintenance is key.

If more people were like us, it would be hard to sell a new mower. When I sell them, I always say, "Take care of it, and it will last longer than you want it too"

Higher end mowers have their advantages for sure, but as you say, mostly we're buying a sticker. If a proven brand-name engine comes with a mower and it starts, runs smooth, has enough power, and lasts years, then most will do the trick. I know some swear by self-propelled and different catchment systems for clippings but that's a choice not a necessity. As for fuel stabilizer, you're right, it's great and will ward off many gas issues. What I like to do is dose the gas heavily with stabilizer when the tank is nearing empty and then run the engine dry until it stops, The heavy dose of stabilizer will penetrate the jets on that last run and help keep them clear while in storage. All the best, Bill. You're doing a really good job on your channel! (and you are looking fantastic for a much older man of your advanced years!).

I tell everybody that 90% of a mower is the motor, so you want to get a good motor and worry a lot less about the name someone stuck on it.. Self-propelled is big here, but yards usually start at 1/4 acre and can get pretty big. Mine is a bit under 1/2 acre, and I use a rider so I can get out of the heat faster in the summer. Apparently, I am older than I thought, so I can't take any chances, I don't want to get heat stroke 🤣

Glad you cleared up the JD myth! My L110 has been the best mower I've had that Kohler Command has been indestructible and it still performs well over 1000 hrs! Give me them 11" wheels any day. My 2 Husqvarna 22" self propelled with blade clutch are life saver in my business 👏🏾

There will be people that swear otherwise. I talked to a LOT of people along the way. Even one unnamed JD dealership(local to me here in Texas) said MTD makes JD mowers for Lowes and HD (yeesh... they don't). I will be kind and not mention names since I go there for parts LOL What motor does your Husqvarna have? if it's got the big wheels it's a safe bet it's also got a higher end motor on it

@@GuysPlayingWithTools When I blew out had a Craftsman 42 given to me because I thought my standby was going to die. It didn't but I had to give it to a buddy that does yards. Wasn't much wrong with it and it had an 18 horse Briggs single. He'd run a Deere for years but said when he got the Craftsman going he hasn't sat on the Deere since. Talked to him yeaterday.

@@lewiemcneely9143 I had a 2000 MTD 18hp that cut like a charm but was showing it's age. I switched to JD after that but I can't say it's better than the old MTD was when it was in good shape. I an pondering my next rider now and I am probably going over the top this time, I am favoring a Toro Titan so far but I won't know what I get until I get it LOL

Toro had Tecumseh engines as a rule for years. Tecumseh sold a lot of mower engines on Craftsman and Toro. I miss Tecumseh.

Yeah they did. I am pretty neutral on Tecumseh motors, they are good motors but the torque curve and governor style works better for go karts than mowers.

It's a shame 190cc engines don't come stock anymore on bottom of the barel mowers. I've seen a 140cc briggs on a self propell mower before. The extra 50cc's help a lot.

I couldn't agree more. They were never on the cheapest mowers but you could get them on a mid range mower and never think about the grass being too tall or too wet, you just went out and plowed through it.

My favorite mowers are the ones that are FREE and Fixable EXCEPT the battery jobs. Sure they're WAY over priced BUT you get what you pay for. I let our local atomic power plant fuel all ours, from trimmers right on up and my carbon footprint from burning diesel for over 50 years wil cover me and Toots totally! So remain cool, Pal. We got 1/2 inch of drops last night according to plan! Happy weekend! CHEERS!

Given the channel title, you are assuming a lot. Most folks do not enjoy playing with tools, for them, it's work. Professionals learn to care for their tools or they fail because they can't compete. The amateurs groundskeepers who care about tools see a relationship between tool care and results. Tool collectors are entirely different. If you are trying to produce good work with minimum total expense, I agree 100% about maintenance being more important than the "quality " of the machine - but knowledge of how the tool works and how to use it most effectively is actually the most important. That knowledge guides the tool you choose and the care you take of it. imo It's more important to match the tool to the user than to match it to the work. I don't expect people to understand or care about machines as a tech or engineer would, because most folks expect that a tool made for them can be turned on and run, turned off when they are done, and other than obvious cleaning, can be ignored the rest of the time. I recognize that people apply effort by priority of something to their welfare. Lawns aren't a necessity, so tools for lawns are low priority unless the user enjoys the associated work. For others a mediocre tool that is highly reliable is better than an excellent one that requires more from the user. The stale gas and mixed deposits issue is why, for light use home grounds keeping equipment, I prefer and recommend electric to gas when the geography allows. Dealing with an extension cord or batteries is a chore, but both are obvious necessities for the equipment to run, making them impossible to forget. For maintenance it's easier to convince a non-tech user to bring a plug in battery inside, and relatively clean electrical equipment into a heated home each winter (at which time they are more likely to do additional cleaning), than to train them to clean and maintain fuel systems of something they store for 5 months in a unheated garage or shed. This wouldn't be as much of an issue if consumer gas machines were designed for cleaner, simple, tool free draining and cleaning of the fuel systems. It wouldn't be expensive for makers to add drains to the tiny fuel tanks. Simple passive fuel level indicators would make it easier for a casual user to schedule running a 2 cycle engine "dry". Flushing such a system could be done with less effort, mess, waste and pollution. Adding these two missing features would increase the perceived value and lifespan of the machines. The only reason for NOT doing so isn't cost. It's because mechanics design machines for mechanics.

I give you that, it's fun to make fun of some brands but when you get down to it, they all use the same moving parts from the same places and I firmly believe that everything on the deck should be steel! I am not a Powersmart fan, given a choice I prefer Briggs, then Honda motors.
