Great video Rich! :) Learning all the time.. and in this field... the learning will never stop :) Great to see what others are using and what's working for them :) I currently use the Benro - Aero 7 Tripod legs.. they have good weight.. can drop right down to the ground if i remove the center column, can also detach one leg for a mono-pod if desired and has a hook on the bottom of the tripod if really heavy weight is needed. I'm using it with the Manfrotto VH502AH Fluid head... as it comes in handy if any video production is needed! I find its a great combo that has worked well for me in Real Estate the last few years.. and well, most every situation thus far. Keep the videos coming! :)

Hey Rich I just launched my Real Estate photography business last week to supplement my income while being a new agent and I absolutely love it, and I have taken so much from your videos the ones I have seen so far, especially the tripod set up. I scored a used Bogen 3046 and a New Manfrotto 410 recently I have my A6000 with Rokinon 12mm mounted on it, it is a heavy setup but I can tell a big difference in my work and it feel professional which for me is huge just the confidence boost. Thanks and I am trying get through as many of your videos to absorb your knowledge and probally comment on them as I do, thanks!

On your advice, I found a 3046 (w/ a nice 3063 pan head) for $150. It's in near mint condition (just some dust and sticker glue residue). Also, picked up the 405 from Adorama (w/ your link). Oh my these are just what I needed. I also have a "nice" travel tripod with a ball head. But fiddling around to get precise positioning was very annoying. Now, with this combo I get perfect leveling and targeting in 5-10 seconds! ZERO fiddling. A great time saver!! THANK YOU, RICH! If you were in the north east I'd buy you a cup of coffee :-)

Another great video Rich. Thanks. I'm interested in upgrading to a geared head. The expense is holding me back for now but I might try searching Craig's List as it sounds like it worked out well for you. And never underestimate the value of a good tripod. I've always kept in mind the investment I have in the camera and lenses they support. Using a cheap tripod is kind of like putting cheap tires on an expensive, fast car.

After too many years with ball heads for RE photography I just bought a pair of Arca D4's to upgrade my kit. They are amazing and worth the price of admission. I thought I would pass along that neither of the 2 I received had the clamp screw 'glued' in as some have experienced. I had both clamps swapped over to RRS lever clamps (my long time favorite) in less than 5 mins myself without sending them off to be done. Well worth the investment!

Hello Rich After watching your video I really wanted a Bogen Tripod. I live in Switzerland, we have a website that does the same as Ebay but only for Switzerland. To my great surprise I found a Bogen Tripod on the website with the original Tripodhead and original manual, where also the price from back then is written on it (125$). I paid 90$ for the tripod. In the last few days I was able to test the tripod with my Eos 5DSR. It is exactly as you said: The Tripod stands absolutely still and I am now also fan of the Tripodhead. Thanks for the tip!

I stand by my tripods day in and day out and that one is the one for me always has been since the mid-1980s so tremendous value as well and it’s amazing how you can still find so many of them, because back in the day, that was probably the most popular tripod in the world, and they made so many, and they just hold up and stand up and last forever I’m really happy I could help you with this.

Thanks for the helpful video. How does the D4 compare to the RRS BH55? I'm hoping to use the D4 with my 500mm lens for precise framing but my main concern has to be about stability. I will deal with the frustrations of composing with a ballhead if that ensures sharp images. Hopefully I can get the best of both worlds in the D4

Hi Rich I have been using the Manfrotto 055CB Black Pro Tripod with the 029mk2 3 way pan & tilt head for 24 odd years mainly for weddings but in the last few years for real estate photography. Would like to get a geared head and like yourself would steer away from the Manfrotto 410 due to the "freeplay" exhibited by a lot of users on You Tube.i think Manfrotto made some better stuff years ago that is why I am looking down the track on picking up a Manfrotto ART 400 Geared Head although even on E Bay , used ones still command high prices, probably because of their quality.
@andyvan5692

very interesting, but as far as levelling the camera, most manufacturers say to use the "virtual horizon" on their backs (phase One, MF cameras), or on the rear LCD (35 mm dslr's/ mirror-less), as a lever, the most motion is at the top, like a flag pole, so the best idea is to level at/on the camera ( why the LF cameras have bubble levels at the top of their standards! ), I say that, because you can put purpose made levels on the cameras' hot shoe, if no horizon feature exists on the camera.
@RichBaum
@RichBaum 3 жыл бұрын
I have a trigger in my hot shoe so that’s not possible. I also don’t like using the in camera level for several reasons. The RRS lever clamp with the bubble level is the perfect solution. Fast easy and 99% right on every time.

Great video! Do you think that D4 spirit levels are accurate? I´m considering buying one, but I don´t know where I could get the clamp changed in Finland. So at first I would probably need to manage without a level on the clamp for some time. I have had lots of problems since I bought a Sony A7R4, as it´s level gauge is extremely inaccurate. So now I´m cosidering to switch back to Canon. I have also used a hot shoe bubble level but neither that is very accurate.

I bought arca swiss d4. All you said is true about D4 head. It’s truly beautiful head. But I have only one gripe. I think the rated payload is overrated. The D4 slips off on my heaviest camera setup (canon 1dx + 400mm f2.8 II). My setup is around 12 lbs, still far beyond 75 lbs rated payload. I tightened all the controls with all my might. Then I tilted the camera, beyond 45 degrees, the head starts sliding and goes down all the way. Do I miss something here?
@RichBaum

I would think your conclusion was a valid one.. I have never tested the pay load but your most likely correct that it's over rated. But I still love the D4

yes, @ 16:49, it is called , as I recall the P 0 hybrid; said "p_ZERO", not 'O'- as in 'o-shit'; also it has the rapidity of a ball head with the c1 cubes axis gearing on the top, so precise when you need it to be, and fast when you want, as a side note- this is also capable of holding not only small 35 mm format cameras, but mf cameras, like the phase One xf, which alone {no lens on}, weighs in at 1.1 KG, or there about!! ( and you can also put a 1.1 kg lens on too, like their Shnieder K. 150, or 240 mm blue ring lenses (~95/135 mm 35 format equivalents), so this just shows how well Arca-Swiss designed the thing!!- stable enough to shoot a 150 MP back! PS: this is with the opinion/ experience of a Phase One dealer, C.R.Kennedy, in Melbourne Australia, one of their reps, Michael Griffiths, and what he told he regularly uses/recommended to me!

I have been using the 405 for a few years now, it’s my most used head. Really liked your video! First question: why do you stick to your ball head for landscape? I’ve never had a good one like the RRS… except a smaller Gitzo when I first started. Next, I’ve been trying to find the cause of instability shooting a 600mm tele on a monorail, starting to think the 405 isn’t rigid enough. So I’m debating getting something old and strong for that occasional use, or upgrading the 405 to something larger. I’m a bit reluctant to lose the 405 because it works so nicely with the Fuji GX680 on down (only 12lb). I’ll see if it’s improved by a heavy monster set of Gitzo sticks.

Hi Rich, Thank you for making this video and I happen to come across your video and yes it really helps me with buying decisions. I am thinking to buy FGP28A (Aluminium), I have a query regarding its centre column. My concern is, is it sturdy enough to hold Nikon Z6ii + 24-70 f4 S lens in horizontal setup (flat lay?. For the horizontal setup, I observe that the weight of the camera/lens will not be in the centre of the tripod, so I am assuming that the weight of the camera might damage the centre column holder and break sometimes, and worst case it may fall off not sure how sturdy it is (is it made up of plastic or metal). Any kind of information if you share is really helpful to decide. Thanks Shashi

I understand your quandry, I guarantee you can find a 3046 if you search E Bay and though I found mine for under $100 depending on when you search it might be more so I think any 3046 under $200 is a great deal and the good part is they usually come in great condition. Other than that I’d suggest Benro but it’s going to run you about $500 for a good tripod. And as far as what grade to get, the Benro is a great option for “Entry” level geared head but found the Arca Swiss D4 to be the best and though it might appear to me a lot of $$ it is a wonderful piece of kit and will last so I say it’s a good investment.

Hello, thank you for the review :) I have an idea to set the Maksutov 127mm telescope on this gear-head. Of course I have a stable tripod. Now - do you think this head would work with Mak 127 with 130x - 150x magnifications in planet/moon/sky and maybe ariplane-spotting? I assume only visual (eye) observing. Could you tell your opinion about this idea?
@RichBaum
@RichBaum 4 жыл бұрын
I like the idea but I think if I were you I would find the weight of your scope and find a geared head that can tolerate that much weight.

@@RichBaum I will go to the photo-shop with my tripod and the telescope tube and check out this setup in action then. The telescope is 3,5kg but in the future I may want to add the bino-viewer+2x eyepiece to it. That would increase the weight to 5kg. Do you think it's to much?

Hi Rich, very interesting video! I've got a really low budget and I want to start profesionally with real estate photography. As I can see I can't afford even a 410 manfrotto gear head. Is there something cheaper you can recomend? Thank you in advance

Have you had any experience with the Leofoto geared heads? The G4 or G2? The Leofoto G4 seems to be very similar to the Arca Swiss D4.

100% Correct, a good tripod will last longer than you will and makes life better and gives you a solid shot and will keep you from having to do it over, even if that is possible.

Thank you for the great review. It appears that the G4 does not allow for a very drastic tilt to allow for shooting more straight upwards at tall buildings, for example when standing nearly beneath them. Am I assuming that correctly? I have the BH-55 currently and love it for my landscape work, but would like a geared head for fine art architecture. Many times I am making compositions that have my camera pointing nearly straight up… the BH-55 allows for that, but with the caveat of not being geared. Perhaps RRS will release a geared version one day. I'd be all over the G4 if it had a better range of motion, and it appears that it lacks in that regard. Thank you for any additional insight you can provide. Cheers!

I assume you’re referring to the D4 not G4? Honestly, the best set up you could get would be a D4 at the tilt shift lens that would be perfect for you. Personally, I’ve never found this head not to tilt enough for my needs, but your needs might be a little bit different.

Was deciding between the Benro and the D4 but then heard about the Arca Swiss P0 hybrid (ball head with gearing to fine tune). Looks like it would work well and a little cheaper, smaller, lighter than the D4. Have you used one or know someone that does?

I've have the PO with the RRS lever clamp and love it. The controls are basic and smooth and it can hold a surprising amount of weight. i.e. 4x5 rail camera; dslr with large telephoto lens. In regards to precision it's akin to the the RRS BH55 he mentions in the video. You can easily pan with the P0 but it doesn't have 3 axis control or finer control the way the D4 or the Benro do. That said, it can lock down tight and you can accomplish a lot of precision work once you've got your tripod setup and level. You can get the P0 w/o a clamp and buy the RRS clamp separately. Call RRS if you want to go this route and they'll help with ordering the clamp and include the required hardware. Add a RRS L -plate or a rail with an Arca-Swiss mount and you'll have a great combo.

If the Arca Swiss works as a ball head, why have a separate ball head set up? I would spend the money on the D4 just to have 2 types of heads. Interior shoots and exterior shoots. Feel like I missed something.

I am a member of REIA and got to biweekly meetings where I do a short 1 minute presentation in front of a group of 60 to 80 people. I have also been going to open houses and speaking to agents there also I have went directly to agencies and spoke with the vice president of the office and here is the kicker I am offering free service for first time clients. Could you please point me in the right direction to help me out. Thank you so much for all of the great videos and cheers
