I love leather. Since the moment I could afford real leather shoes and not fake leather, it's been leather for me. It is an investment as leather pieces last a very long time. Every fake leather shoe I purchased lasted barely a year.

Crucial point to call out marketing that obfuscates. Plastic - or vinyl - is what we are talking about. Plastic and vinyl shoes are likely to be far less comfortable in terms of fit and breathability, which fact "Vegan leather" would seem to want to hide-

I used to sell rollerskates, and a lot of companies offer vegan leather (plastic) or vegan suede (microfiber) skate boots. They would cost the same or sometimes more than real leather or suede, and last maybe a few months compared to the real stuff's multiple years. That's a lot of wasted money, and a lot more plastic in landfills. If you do choose vegan leather, do it for light use items and ffs never pay full price!

Even as a vegetarian who prefers to not support any animal killing industry, I agree that the vegan leather label is a money making farce. I would, however, like to know more about the leather made from fruit skins (process, environmental impact, durability etc). This video unfortunately only highlighted one vegan leather option.

he actually does mention mushroom and fruit skin leather - but I agree with him - it's not been on the market long enough to know if it will really have the durability to hold up over time like leather and PU/PVC materials.

I remember back in the late 60s, my dad worked for Uniroyal, and they made Naugahyde at the plastics plant in Naugatuck Connecticut. Don't wear it out in the rain. Pay the money for something natural instead of hurting the environment with something that is not going away.

Polyurethane is basically plasitic - does it biosegrade more slowly than real leather? I have doubts.

There’s no “catch.” There’s no “clever marketing.” There’s just the option to avoid participating in the cycle of violence against/exploitation of animals. The word “vegan” is a clear and unambiguous way of indicating to those of us who care about animals that a particular article of clothing does not contain parts of an animal or involve harm to animals. Nobody is claiming that vegan leather is environmentally friendly, but the meat industry is totally unsustainable. If we want to avoid a climate catastrophe, we will have to dramatically reduce animal agriculture, which will dramatically reduce the amount of leather the cattle industry is able to produce. It’s not that deep! If you continue to eat meat and continue to buy animal products, you don’t really care about the environment.
