When I got my first car, I decided to try to prank my dad, saying I changed my oil, he was proud that I'd done it myself. He asked where I got the oil, I stated the local grocery store. He asked what oil I used, I said vegetable. He panicked so much until I told him I was joking. He now knows I know too much about cars to make stupid mistakes like that 😂

This reminds me when my dad tried to tell me an early to mid 60's Impala was an mid 60's Malibu. How I knew without the badges? The sheer size difference. An Impala is just an elongated Malibu. At least at that time with the size.

When I was attending college, a person at the dorms painted his own car black and white with a paint brush claiming that it will scare people into thinking he was driving a police car. It looked like a little kid did the paint job. Nobody was fooled but many laughed.

Not a mechanic, but I have seen someone fill their passenger side seat with a bunch of fast food wrappers, bags, empty cups, etc to the point you couldn’t even sit down in there because the place you put your legs there was fully covered. Like, how hard is it to take out the trash?

This is the seat I ride in. My ride never cleans their car. They used to drive this orange toaster of a car with a plastic bag of trash on the shift stick. It fell off one day, got stuck under her pedal then she swerved into a field. We were on the way to a lake, she was fine but when we got to the lake the bag was back where it was.

Sadly I'm also guilty of doing something like story 1. The first car I drove had the oil light turn on so I figured it just needed some more oil (or something like that I'm not exactly sure what I was thinking now that I know better) so I bought a bottle of oil and put it in. I looked inside the hole I put the oil into and I couldn't see any oil, so I kept on putting more and more in until one day the engine started to lose power. This was terrible as I was driving on a two lane unlit road. I managed to pull over and opened the hood and could see something in the engine compartment GLOWING RED HOT. Still having no idea what it was, I slowly limped the car home and then had it towed to a mechanic the next day. Boy, the amount of shame that came over me when the mechanic told me that's the most oil he's ever seen in an engine. It was so bad that almost the entire dipstick was covered in oil...

I mean, an old diesel engine can run on diesel mixed with vegetable oil or canola oil... But modern ones with all kinds of sensors and sensitive tech will be damaged. A couple of local school busses ran on it successfully and by the smell of their exhaust they actually used frying oil that had already been used to fry food.

That was a great story about someone putting in the smallest Ranger engine choice into an F-150. I’ve driven a mid-1990s Ford Ranger with a 2.3 and it was slow, so I can’t imagine it in an F-150 which is a bigger truck. That was probably why none of the Ranger engine options were available in an F-150 of that time period, it’s not a suitable power plant for a truck of that size, and would even be slower with any kind of a load…

From the other side of the equation, I was in the market for a second-hand car a couple of years ago. Took a basic sedan for a test drive and everything seemed to be fine except for the fact that the brakes screamed like a banshee caught in a bear trap. Obviously, the brakes were worn down to the metal. I told the dealer that I liked the car but it would need to have the brake pads replaced to make it road-worthy before I signed anything. He insisted that I would need to replace the brake pads as that was "consumer repair". I shook my head and told my wife that we were leaving. That dealership had collapsed in less than a year.

I didn't see it, but someone asked my brother to ruin his truck. He was a friend of my brother, and his grandfather agreed to help him buy a car if his truck was busted beyond repair. What does my brother do? He takes the thing to an empty lot, gets it going as fast as possible and down shifts into reverse at max speed from the highest gear. The kicker is that my brother than said "Well, now you get to explain to your grandpa how the truck got destroyed. Same group of friends went to a junkyard and found a tire balancing machine. They mucked with it so it would spin the tire as fast as it could go. After awhile they decided to light it on fire and spin it. Tire snapped off and ran over one of the guys.

Oh here's a two for... First off I just finally retired my 40 year old Chevy wagon with well over 300,000 miles on it. It is amazing how long these things will last with just the basic care and upkeep. Secondly many years back my brother used to help an older guy down the block from us. One day the old dude said "you always seem walk here don't you have a car?" My brother told him "no I don't." Long story short the old guy gave my brother an older car telling him "the transmission is shot." We did a filter and fluid change and drove the beast for like 8 years.

I work in a bike shop, not even in repairs but I have also seen a very long list. Including some things you only see once in your lifetime. Someone broke(!) their strong aluminum seat post they bought cause they had the wrong size and tried it anyway. You could kill someone with that thing. Some other customer drove with the stem so far out only a half inch was inserted. Some regular things: Stem mounted on backwards Totally wrong mounted handlebar or seat Packaging left on bikes not even new ones. Tire pressure to high or to low. At least once a month a tire goes boom when some costumer tries to pump air in it at our store.

Reading these stories makes me grateful the UK has the mandatory annual MOT (Ministry of Transport) test for vehicles in which cars etc are tested to within an inch of their lives for safety & road worthiness. Practically every vehicle described here would fail the test & the owner would have to pay to have the necessary work done to make the car safe to drive before they could drive it again

The video for taken down for the swearing, but I once saw a KZfaq short by a mechanic talking about how much he hates “jeep people” and showing why. He had the hood open. The jeep owner came in because something he installed didn’t work. Because he’d hooked it directly into the battery with speaker wire. All the battery cable was replaced with speaker wire.

I was working on a farm a couple a years ago and I had to take out some solid manure from a barn to put clean straw in to the sows. The loader was a 4 wheel drive and the drive on the back wheels stopped working and I told my boss about it. The though that it was that I had a high gear in. I told him several times that he was wrong. Before this the breaks was not working. I told him and this loader was new so it should be like that. So it was in for something on the shop and I told them about the breaks and it had no oil in the break system. When the 4 wheel drive was not working I told him that he was like when the breaks did not work. When he understood that I was correct he was a bit ashamed that he behaved like that and said that I had a lot of manure in the bucket. It was so obvious that he was a bit ashamed about how he behaved... I know a lot of basics so many of these things in this vid is just "What the fuck...?! How dumb are people?!"

I, very stupidly, sped up my car and tried to push it into neutral. It was an automatic, I'd never driven a manual, and it slammed into reverse. So... yeah, I really shouldn't be allowed to drive or own vehicles.

At my last job we had a boss that put DEF In the fuel tank of one of our trucks. No one knew what he did until Then I explained when I turned on the refrigeration unit truck had and about 10 minutes later it died. The truck nor the refrigerator unit ran quite right even after they fixed everything on it
