They were instantly in an impossible situation. Nonetheless, I find it odd, to put it mildly, that none of them acted at least awkward and confused when the speaker said "fought against the Russians in WWII".

Did you not notice the pause, double take and brief moment of incomprehension then realisation as ahis brain realised what he ws saying in the middle of the speech? Sadly for Rota, he was committed and could do nothing except plough on and pray nobody would notice. It's safe to assume at least some of the other people in the chamber also twigged and we have to ask why they still joined in. They weren't committed and they could have stayed in their seats and not applauded. The Chief of the Canadian Defence Staff for one. Surely he has sufficient grasp of military history to understand what "fought the Russians in WW2" means.

Good that now there is some talk that there should be an apology to Canadian veterans! Trudeau and all the MPs should have in the first place apologised to them, they had to fight harder and additional numbers of them died the western front. Germans created these foreign SS legion divisions to fight Red Army on the eastern front so that they could have more better equipped and trained original German troops fighting on the western front and were able to inflict additional casualties on allied soldiers including many Canadians. CBC should look deeper into this aspect.

This wasn’t someone who was just sitting in the gallery of parliament..he was singled out by the Speaker as a WW2 veteran and Canadian hero. Someone should have vetted his history. Parliament didn’t have to do a Google search of everyone that was invited..how many others were singled out and applauded? Just one google search would have sufficed in this instance. I suspect more than just Rota was organizing this. Who were they and why did Rota take the blame for the whole debacle? Was it a staffer? Who else? The way Rota stumbled when he was reading about the man’s history and what he’d done leads me to believe he (Rota) didn’t know much about the man.

Why do you suspect more than Rota invited him? Like on what basis do you suspect that the Speaker of the House had to ask anyone else? It's HIS HOUSE, he's the top dog in the house, the PM isn't allowed to tell him anything. And yeah, clearly he had only a very surface understanding of who his guest was, thats why he's so irresponsible and had to resign over this F-UP. Why do people want so bad to blame everything on the PM as if he's the emperor of the country?

No part of the narrative forming around this story even makes sense. What was stated on the day was that parliament had before them a WWII veteran who "fought against the Russians". If the argument is that not one member of parliament knows what nations composed the Allied forces in WWII, or even just the three big ones, they all have to go.

The solution is simple Trudeau must resign and hopefully someone more in touch with what Canadians are facing, and someone who truly has Canada as its most important responsibility. There needs to be a Prime Minister who respects international relations, but their own citizens come first. Right now at this crucial time, we need a true leader in this country who does not cave into the pleas of other countries that through their own government’s deliberate disregard for their own citizens, economy, corruption will continue regardless of Canada’s involvement. We need a leader who stands up for Canadians first even if this sounds selfish. Canadians should not be living in cars and lining up at food banks. This is not the way of Canadians.

But Boris Johnson, representing NATO went and tore the agreement up and afterward Z. became a USA talking head. One cannot renounce Nazism and yet knowingly fund it at the same time. Mr. Hunka gave Parliament the dilemma that by continuing to support Zelensky, they have to support Nazism. They have to be Nazis themselves. The MPs know this and aren't happy about it. But faced with this grim choice, they still reluctantly support Nazism. As they do, Canadians should not support the federal Parliament.
