I am a owner of a integrated health clinic (physio/ osteopathy/ chiropractic) and all I can say is CrossFit has been the best thing that ever happened for my business. Our business was contracted to do a national CrossFit competition and on that day we had 6 dislocated shoulders, 15year old girl injured her sacral nerve and host of other soft tissue injuries.

Because CrossFit is dangerous because you going all out trying to compete for the shortest time limit and once you get fatigued long is bad and you're going to get into it sooner or later you may be lucky enough not to if you young as you get older as you more prevalent to get is it and if you're not on drugs like most of them are you going to get injured because if you're not doing Peds you're not going to recover therefore you going to get in High volume use of PEDs in CrossFit in the serious competition so there's probably a pretty high volume of usage of performance-enhancing drugs most of your local CrossFit gyms

Supersets is a thing, this is why I don't shame CrossFit for going back to back ... What I shame them for is the incentives, they're totally backwards. Focused on rep numbers, disregard of form, the constant pushing mentality past the healthy point are some of the issues I have with it Look at the CrossFit Games and how much of a joke they are...Why not learn with professionals that do this for decades in a healthier way... triathlon or heptathlon In these modalities you a a pre-set number of exercises, that the athletes are aware of and can prepare physically and develop tactics in advance, also you can set a line for the "sport"...do you want to see an endurance fitness competition (like in triathlon where you do the exercises back to back) or find the most complete fitness athlete(like in heptathlon where you find the most complete athlete but let them rest between exercises to judge them in their best condition) I would go for the heptathlon route, since CrossFit isn't just an endurance focused "sport"

Thank you for this interview. A program like the one described in this interview makes me think that someone my age can perform consistent routines, starting with the level of fitness I have, and work up from there. So many programs I read about or listen to start with a level of training that is far beyond my fitness (and mobility) level. This one resonates with me and makes me think I can actually, at 64, achieve my goals for feeling good, moving well, and reducing my risk of injury.

My main issue with CrossFit is their ridiculously low entry requirements for coaches. You can literally just apply for a license and it will be given to you after a couple of DAYS of training, no prior education or experience required. People can get injured doing almost any sport, especially with heavy weights. What makes CrossFit really unique is that you are very likely to get hurt even with a "professional" coach. Many (if not most) of them have no real knowledge of exercise science or any other related topics, and don´t know any progression methods besides just "pushing harder". They often let their students do lifts that they are not ready for in terms of mobility, and they end up destroying their joints as a result. Another cause for all the injuries is that most CrossFit gyms make their classes way too big, making it impossible for the coach to keep an eye on everyone even if he does know what he´s doing.

I agree with you. All of the Olympic lifts are a sport in themselves, they are very technical requiring huge amounts of skill and require months if not years of dedicated practice to become profficient. To perform these highly technical and demanding exercises for time is asking for trouble.
@jakeennen9806
@jakeennen9806 7 ай бұрын
That goes to the respect the gym owner has to the sport. Most training certifications require less than CrossFit. Most are an online test, with no in class training. You would hope the gym owner would want qualified coaches, with also an L1. But most gyms outside CrossFit are horrible with that as well.

This healthy, patient way of listening to your body and combining your needs with your goals is fire. I've really embraced the patience and diligence aspect and crave what I learn from that just as much as I crave the physical work. And that mindset helps me stay consistent on days that I just don't have as much energy or time. Also, Daniel, great questions, man.

There's some things I don't like about crossfit: 1) they disregard sports science. You train strength, technique, speed and separately. You also don't always train at max intensity. 2) they disregard safety (duh). You don't move heavy weights under time pressure when you're gassed out 3) it's a marketing gimmick targeted at maximizing profit 4) all the crossfitters who think they're better

I have a background in sports science through college, and been doing crossfit for 9 years. Here are my thoughts on this: First off, a lot of the problems that are attributed to crossfit can happen in any globo-gym, or in any runners club, yoga class, etc. It just depends on how good the coaches, programming, and culture are. To your points: 1) We don't always train at max intensity. A good crossfit box, just like a good globo-gym, has programming that has proper meso, macro, and microcycles. We also do focus on each modality separately, but group them together intentionally at times. Life isn't always going to just present you a situation where you only need speed, or where you only need strength, etc. You need to train them in tandem. Also I'd say if you look at the repetition patterns for a typical crossfit workout, they really aren't doing anything crazy from a work/load perspective. It's basically just HIIT training. 2) A big part of crossfit is knowing your own limits, as well as knowing proper bailing methods. There's nothing wrong with going for a lift as long as you have a plan to safely get out from under the weight if you aren't going to finish the lift, tired or not. Safety is huge in crossfit, and there is a scaling option for any technical movement, and any weight. I have seen very few injuries in my gym in the last 9 years, and most were not from highly technical movements either (my only one was an ankle fracture I got while running and I just stepped wrong). 3) I agree with you on this point, crossfit as a brand is all about upselling and the cost to get a membership to a typical box is usually pretty darn outrageous. If I were trying to join one in California for example, you'd probably be paying $200+ per month for a membership. 4) Speaking for myself I don't think I am better than everyone because I do crossfit. I absolutely know there are people getting fit from other means that can blow me out of the water easily. However, I do think crossfit prepares you better for everyday athletic pursuits than most other fitness regimens. I'd say on average a dedicated crossfitter can perform at or slightly above the average skill level for most sports. You do train all aspects of fitness, after all. The flipside to that is most crossfit athletes are not going to be a master in any specific arenas because the focus is always on different things; you don't take the time to dedicate your training to, say powerlifting, or running a marathon. Haters love to hate on crossfit, and it is by no means a perfect sport, but at the end of the day if it makes people feel fulfilled, and helps them stay active and achieve their own goals, that is all that really matters. I can't stand globo-gyms, so if I didn't have crossfit I'd be severely overweight right now lol.

@@willwei3027 Exactly, I do not understand the hate to each other. Do what you enjoy an train at a good facility with proper coaches and know your limits. At every sport you see stupid people doing stupid things and end up getting hurt. If I was not training at a gym I would train much like crossfit because it is the way I enjoy training. Combining, skill, with power and endurance.

I'm 59 so I'm adjusting workouts as I learn what will keep me independent for life. Finally focusing on long neglected shoulders and whatever is weak. I find that as I get older, it is better to do the whole body to get blood going with bodyweight functional moves. Push, pull, squats, hip hings, and carries seems a good break out of the basics. I notice when do deadlifts with active shoulders it covers both hip hinge and carries to some degree.

The gym I was going to just shut but there was a woman who trained there who competed in the CrossFit games. So she promoted CrossFit while training at a regular gym, using conventional strength training to get in shape to compete. There seems to be a bit of that while the CrossFit high intensity / low consistency model gets sold as superior to normie approaches.

i respect marcus and subscribe to his channel. but, i've never been a fan of crossfit. i was a powerlifter decades ago, and I know it's not hard to get injured doing max lifts. i've also dabbled with a tiny amount of olympic lifting, lifted in gyms where people trained those lifts and those lifts require far more technique to get good at without getting injured. and, those kip pullups are such a form abomination that they shouldn't have the word pullup even attached to them. marcus is a very good athlete, and a good trainer, but many crossfitters are not, and would be better served by doing something else. i'm a senior citizen now, but i can do calisthenics daily fairly safely and injury free. you don't need a gym to train, either.

Crossfit is for me just marketing. They want to sell this to us. Then they change names to exercises like pullups in "Crossfit pullups" and do this swing-a-ling thing. Everybody i know who did Crossfit just did it for max.3 years. Because after this they were badly injured, most of them have had serious back problems.

I’ve been doing CrossFit for over three years and I’ve not seen anything you described above. I’ve never seen at my gym “CrossFit pull-ups” in a workout. “Kipping” is a gymnastics term. CrossFit does employ gymnastic training. I’m going to assume you are talking about “kipping pull-ups” which is an actual movement. There are so many members at the gym I go to who have been there 7+ years so, again, your comment doesn’t really make sense to me. When I travel I stop in at other boxes and have made friends all over the US. Recently, I was in Orlando, FL. Many at the box I stopped in had been there for years and years. Again, I’m not sure what you’re talking about. I’d love to hear more about it though. I find this fascinating.
