McDavid was too young to be a captain when they gave it to him. Hes expected to be everything just because of his talent..weve always needed a leader

Exactly, and it's a point that I feel is not talked about nearly enough. Look at Tavares, for example; he's the captain despite Matthews being the better player. And even then, Jason Spezza is giving him a run for his money when it comes to being the leadership figure. Connor McDavid isn't a good leader, and he shouldn't be forced into the role. Let him play, and let someone else lead the team.

I totally agree. Some elite players are also elite leaders (Crosby, McKinnon yes I know he isn't captain but still a born leader, Toews). Some elite players (Kucherov, Kane, Seugin) don't have the psychological makeup for being The Guy in the lockerroom and on the bench. From what i know of the oilers, RNH would have been my pick for the C

The Oilers's problems have been almost completely in net. They have top 6 offense more than covered with Draisaitl, McDavid, RNH, Puljujarvi, and Hyman. They need slightly more depth (Yamamoto, Foegele, and Kassian have all been 3rd line level, but the last few players in the lineup have been completely invisible). Defense is weak, but definitely is on a extremely low point right now and can play much better (Nurse and Bouchard are studs, Ceci and Keith have been passable, but everything else is mediocre so when anyone goes down the entire defense is in shambles). Their best goalie is a rookie who is playing as expected, and their two elder statesmen have been basically throwing games on completely savable shots. This in reality has just been a major blow to their confidence which is preventing them from keeping pace (because on some level they think they're bound to lose) with other teams. Unfortunately the wealth of prospects the Oilers had in years past have either grown up and have already made the league (Skinner, McLeod, Bouchard, Yamamoto, etc...), or just aren't really eligible to play right now (Broberg and Holloway). I would be seriously questioning Holland's choice to trade the pick that could have been their goalie of the future in Wallstedt for Bourgault though...

They got more points in the first 12 games of the season than the following 23. Vegas is a +20 on goal differential, Edmonton is 0. They've needed to make a few trades for half a decade now and they've shown that they either can't make those trades or simply won't. Playoffs are still anyone's game sure but strange things are indeed afoot at the Circle K.

i think after a certain amount of losses, and a pattern of not being consistent, it starts to become a psycological mental thing, if the whole team believes that theres a problem with the team, the next time they get on the ice, their mental isnt in the game, their not thinking about winning, they're thinking about how they will lose this time, and knowing deep down that their chances of losing is alot higher than winning

The Oilers winning so many Stanley Cups with a team of HOF'ers was total lightning in a bottle. Outside of Gretzky, you have to admit it was pretty ridiculous how the rest of the top guys panned out to be HOF caliber on one team. The Edmonton fans are spoiled, they got too much success so early in their NHL infancy that we assume it's the standard where as you have teams slog away for decades to be just competitive enough to be a legitimate NHL Caliber team. I think McDavid is the most skilled player I have ever seen play the game....but if Crosby can make all his linemates amazing (who ever plays with him) and the Oilers can't find a soul besides Leon.....is it just poor management or is it that McDavid is so good that nobody can ever play with him in his prime? Edmonton might just need to come to grips that, they might never win another cup like that lightening in a bottle they got from the 83-84 Greatest NHL Team ever and forward. I mean, look the Rangers won the 94 cup with 7 ex Oiler Stanley Cup champs on the roster.

Sounds like the management staff needs to be blown up. Coach has to play with the players he's given. Connor needs to see something change with the players he gets to captain. I'm sure it's not easy but if the GM and his scouting recommendations for NHL players to trade for or sign are giving this result, that's where the cull needs to happen. If Connor sees that a new group is making a different style of moves, he might give them a year or two grace, or he's gone.

McDavid is getting desperate, that's why he's reacting this strangely and, almost, detached. He's been the best player in the league, talent-wise, since his rookie season pretty much, he's had some unbelievable seasons already by age 25 & the Oilers have won jackshit with him & another top-5-to-7 player in the league in Draisaitl. 1 playoff series, that's it. And the issues with the team are not getting fixed, in fact, they're getting worse by the day. It's simple: if the Oilers had won a couple more playoff series by now, or if they weren't in such a desperate tailspin right now (they've won 3 of their last 15 games), you think McDavid would be acting like this & would be so desperate, as to flippantly dismiss whatever concerns people have about someone like Evander Kane, just because he's a talented hockey player??

This is cring worthy to see a generational talent unable to lead his team through adversity. The word generational is simply a title bestowed upon a player who demonstrates the qualities that not only make other players around him better but inspires his team to follow his lead. Connor is missing out on so many opportunities to push forward. It's frustrating to see the squandering of such talent and the potential to raise his status among the greatest generational talents of our time.

I love the comment of the saying are the 30th place team therefore there is something wrong with losing to them (Ottawa). It's not like they had a crap November because half their roster were Belleville call ups and they did not have Batherson, Norris, Zub or Connor Brown for large parts of that run... Which explains the poor record they have. You know that Drake Batherson you all creamed over an episode ago. The Sens are not a bad team considering they spanked Calgary a couple nights prior. If you actually looked at Ottawa's past 10 game record it's fairly decent. That and during that stretch they beat Tampa and Carolina... So they must have had something wrong with them as well. As for Edmonton they have looked awful for a 10+ game stretch and that has been with McDavid and Draisaitl.

I think it's important to note that Ethan Bear AND Adam Larsson wanted to move on from Edmonton for personal reasons. Of course you'd prefer them over Tyson Barrie and Cody Ceci but you can't force players to stay if they want to leave. I hope I'm proven wrong about this but re-signing Mike Smith and trading for Duncan Keith at full price might be what sets them back. The Oilers would still have close to $8M in cap space without them on the team. I have a hard time believing with that much money saved up, no other available goalie wouldn't at least consider Edmonton and want to be the guy that helps McDavid and Draisaitl compete for a Cup. Even if you have to play an unproven prospect or two on defense, a good enough goalie will mask that issue. As for secondary scoring, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins should be the 3C when he comes back from his injury. Dave Tippett never entertains this for a consistent amount of games, but it would solve some of their bottom six issues.

Lol you guys think McDavid is going somewhere because he is frustrated? Everyone gets frustrated at times. He's not going anywhere boys. Ovechkin didn't win his cup for 16 years. Remember that!

There's a big difference between McDavid and Ovechkin; the Capitals were almost always in contention even without Ovechkin, whereas the Oilers are barely better than the Arizona Coyotes without McDavid. The Capitals constantly losing in the playoffs was partially a lot of bad luck. The Oilers constantly losing in the playoffs is because they have less depth than a kiddie pool.
@Quole1234
@Quole1234 2 жыл бұрын
Lol 'frustrated at times'. McDavid has made the playoffs only twice and the second time they got swept in the first round. At least Ovechkin made the playoffs nearly every year and he made it past the first round plenty of times. The oilers have been easily one of the worst teams these last 15 or so years. Like Buffalo they are just hopeless. The Leafs are hopeless too.
@TheEDFLegacy
@TheEDFLegacy 2 жыл бұрын
@@Quole1234 Although I'm firmly holding off on the Leafs until they win the first round, I _will_ say this; the Leafs _aren't_ hopeless. Unlike Edmonton, they have a solid farm system (the Marlies), and have a number of solid prospects and depth (for example, where the heck did Campbell come from?! Then when he was off, where did the Brick Woll come from?!). Edmonton has none of these. They have maybe a third of a full NHL team, and a bunch of average AHLers filling up the rest. At this point they literally have to give up McDavid and Drai for picks and above average _NHL_ players if they even want to contend at this point. The fact that they're getting in the playoffs on occasion is only because McDavid has enough moments to make it count. But he can't handle the playoffs because other teams can simply score using secondary and tertiary lines when McDavid is off the ice.

If you want a good argument on the AHL, the Tampa affiliate had a LOT of their core members wrecking other teams at the AHL before moving up. Oilers have had bad AHL teams and have underfunded them for years.

The oilers problem is their overall identity. They try to play like a high skill, run n gun team, when they've only got 2 forwards that land in the high skill category. They need to focus on team defense and stopping the other team with all 5 guys on the ice, not just the guy in net. McDavid is the best (offensive) player in the league, but he is booty cheeks defensively. Go watch the leafs game in edmonton back in December, and watch the defense that McDavid provided on a rush to the net by Rielly. That's a pathetic display for even a 4th liner or a rookie, let alone your captain, highest paid player in the league, and supposed "best player in the league". If you look at all around play, there are a handful of centres in the league that come in above McDavid. Draisaitl being one of them, but even his defensive game has fallen off as of late. Until those 2 guys buy in and lead the team, they're going to suffer this terrible hockey.

I thought of that play as Reilly's revenge for McDavid going around him like a pylon last year. Morgan has a memory.
@SuperheroRockstar
@SuperheroRockstar 2 жыл бұрын
He was chasing Nylander on that rush by lightly tapping him on the shoulder and arm with his stickblade. He made zero effort to stop him with his body and Willy just flew threw the zone, then turned behind the net, and then threw backhand pass that went through 4 Oilers and to Rielly at the point to make that shot. It's like McDavid can only skate 1 direction.

Why would they be so shocked? They have had Connor,& Drasaitil for years,& been underachievers for years... except 1 season they made the 2nd round. You guys just over rate them,& fall for it every season,as Adam so deftly pointed out. I didn't have them missing the playoffs,but I don't fall for it...know they aren't remotely good enough to be a legit contender.

Short answer.... McDavid is the ultimate complainer....he doesn't act like a captain at all. He may be the most talented...but I question his "leadership". His CONSTANT bad body language can't possibly help the morale in the room. Sometimes it's not always JUST the coaching and management
@TheEDFLegacy
@TheEDFLegacy 2 жыл бұрын
McDavid isn't a leader. But that's not McDavid fault. That's the GM's fault for trying to make McDavid a leader when he isn't one, instead of finding a leader to lead the team. Matthews on the Leafs, for example, isn't the captain despite being the best player on the team.

Longest non-intelligent conversation from these guys ever. No serious commentary, just goofing off the whole time. They talk about Edmonton 3-4x a year and this is what we get for commentary? Go back to the Leafs and just stick with them. Btw this is not criticism for saying negative stuff, it's criticism for saying nearly nothing and adding so little value to the discourse. Boring.... I was excited to see the Oilers mentioned and really was hoping to hear more valuable discourse other than what's their AHL affiliate coach's name.

Good teams are built with at least one elite d-man, a solid top 4 defense, and strong goaltending. The forward group comes second. The oilers have been flawed since the years they drafted hall and RNH. And it's been status quo ever since, even with McJesus. It's depressing.
