Hello everyone!
In this video I'm trying to diagnose some running issues on a 2000 BMW F650GS. As the video was getting a bit long, I've decided to split it in 2 parts. So if you want to see the fix, please look out for part 2. It aim to post it in a few days.
I hope this was helpful and thanks for watching!

btw starting procedure ,for thumpers , press and hold down the start button for 2-3 seconds after the bike starts , so the ecu has a chance to reset , there is one sensor on flywheel and of course a thumper changes rotation speed on the power stroke , I believe it takes 2-3 rotations for the ecu to rest , and these bikes are set to run lean from the ecu , Its easy to forget the starting procedure and then a few starts later it all gets a bit dodgie, the other rest is the key toured to the on position but don't crank the motor, then slowly twist the accelerator open and close slowly 3 times , that should clear out the ecu , or un plug the ecu for about 3o minutes , sorry if this sounds a bit weird , I love your episodes , Ive got a 09 gs650gs and I've had these issues and the starting procedure seems to be important

@@garage_tales Please give me some advice, I have a G650xcountry, only 10000km, hot staling issue. New battery, new spark plugs, I wait for the self check when I turn it on and then I just press the starter button. It runs until it heats up and then shuts down. When I drive it I have to constantly add throttle. Should I grind it with an angle grinder or is there any hope? :) The official service does not solve it.
@garage_tales
@garage_tales 2 жыл бұрын
@@johnsmith-sj7xk Hey John. Thanks for reaching out. I’m sorry you’re having trouble. My first thought would be a faulty sensor, unit or maybe just a contact somewhere that once hot, if fails to work anymore. I don’t know what testing equipment you have available, but I assume once it’s stalled it won’t start anymore until it cools down? Maybe you need to get it hot and see what you’re missing. Spark? Fuel? Or maybe both. First thing I would try is to get a reading on your crank sensor and see if the signal fails once hot. I have a video on a Triumph Adventurer with that issue so maybe worth checking that out to get an idea on how it was failing. If you have any other questions ask away! Hope you van get it sorted :)

@@garage_tales Hi, thanks for the quick reply. This problem of mine is quite common with this model and many owners have this problem. At the BMW factory level it is not solvable. Even the older g650 as in your video has this problem and all the parts are exactly the same as on my engine. I start it easily when it's cold as I described, when it reaches operating temperature it shuts off, in fact the revs drop and shut down. I start it again very easily but I have to add a little throttle when starting. And so on at every traffic light :). It has been going on for 10 years and I drive it very little for that reason. I'll check the crank sensor. Maybe when the rubber base of the throtle body is heated, "fake air" is taken through a crack, a little brake cleaner, whether it will raise the revs in that case. I have already cleaned the throtle valve with brake cleaner. Spark plugs and battery are new. I'll test the way you made the throtle sensor potentiometer and air temperature sensor. What do you think if no solution is found, to add a temperature variable resistor - NTC resistor serial to ATS and mount on front of bike , the ECU would get data that the air temperature is 10-15 degrees lower, that the mixture would be richer and the ECU would spoof. Does the ECU learn, will the ECU learn this new state of sensor resistance ,would that take me back to the beginning?

Hi, just FYI, this afternoon a friend and I reviewed the Camshaft Position Sensor. It is very clean, there are no metal particles on it or inside the case. The resistance was about 240 ohms and did not change after heating with a hair dryer.

@garage_tales
@garage_tales 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there. 560 is the fault code? Can’t see it on the bmw code list. What’s the problem you’re having with the bike?
@dmwops
@dmwops 2 жыл бұрын
@@garage_tales Hi my initial problem was the bike would stall and cut out while in slow moving traffic or stopped at junction’s / traffic lights, clutch pulled in but it always started straight back up. I investigated this and changed the spark plug type and performed various other checks but it finally manifested into the bike becoming hard to start which lead me notice the fuel pump was not always being primed when the key and kill switch were operated. Because of this I replaced the original fuel pump and have with an after marked replacement but was still experiencing an unreliable machine so replaced again with a part that also included the connection housing and I’ve also re-terminated the connectors directly connected to the fuel pump housing under the saddle. Seeing your video and because of everything else I have already replaced, throttle body, air box, fuel pumps (Kemso), etc. I’ve also now ordered a replacement air box sensor but this will not solve the issue with the fuel pump. I’ve tested voltage to pin 27 on the ECU and get 12v but at the fuel pump connectors there doesn’t seem to be much voltage when it is working around 0.13 compared with 0.03 when not priming. I will double check the wiring again inside the tank but unless this is some movement while I sit on the machine to start I cannot believe this would be related, fuses also ok as it works and then doesn’t depending if I’ve removed the physical battery connections. Recently I’ve been checking the wiring loom for wear and tear as my GS-911 gives me the 560 fault - Fuel Pump short-circuit to Earth or Open-Circuit or output-stage overloaded., I’ve also proved this by disconnecting the air sensor and got a similar fault description. I’ve been disconnecting the battery a lot while checking the loom and this is where I seem to currently be having an issue with the pump working on one connection and then not working on the next reconnection, so I believe I have a wiring issue somewhere but am not sure what I can do next to identify and resolve this very frustrating issue, so any help and advice would be very greatly received.
@garage_tales
@garage_tales 2 жыл бұрын
@@dmwops It does sound like you have a wiring issue. Probably the insulation is damaged somewhere and shorting out? Hope you find it :)
@dmwops
@dmwops 2 жыл бұрын
@@garage_tales Hi I checked the fuel pump housing again and found a damaged live wire, so I replaced this with another housing, I had a couple of good rides with no issues then the dreaded "560 Fuel Pump, Short-circuit to Earth or Open-circuit or output-stage overloaded" fault is back again leaving me stranded, so feel the fault must be between the ignition and the pump housing somewhere in the loom. Couple you suggest how I would circumvent the loom wiring and still run the pump via the ECU etc, by installing new wiring direct from the battery terminals etc.

Hello! I got some very strange and hard to diagnostic issues, maybe you have some thoughts? The situation is following: BMW F650 GS year 2000. 77k km. When I aggressively picking up speed, the engine suddenly stalled. I stopped, started up, at idle everything is fine, but as soon as I slightly open the throttle, it starts to shut up, stall. More than 1600-1700 rpm is not gaining, barely got home on the first and clutch. I did calibration (or rather shamanism) with the ignition on, twisting the throttle, and turning it off. Switched all connectors. I checked the throttle sensor for resistance, there seem to be no dips in resistance, it slowly increases/decreases when I turn the throttle. Also checked all three wires from TPS connector to main unit - all is good. I changed the spark. The old one had fresh soot, but this is most likely due to a relatively long trip on idle rpm. For maintenance, everything was changed at the beginning of the season, air filters, oil, oil. Today also changed the fuel filter. What else to look?

Hey there. Sorry to hear you’re having trouble. I think the 2 videos I’ve made on the running issue on this bike cover nearly everything that could be wrong. I would start with trying to find out if you have enough fuel pressure and see what your mixture is doing. Hope that helps. Ask if you have any questions.
@HaynesGarage

Hi Alethon, did you manage to get your bike sorted? I had a similar problem but it would happen when accelerating at high speed so it would stall just after overtaking cars and lorries, not ideal! The issue started when I replaced my radiator. I then did a few things to my bike but after changing the fuel regulator, re bleeding the whole coolant system and replacing the gasket ring in the radiator hose the problem seemed to go. May just be coincidence but I hope it’s fixed now :) good luck.

@@HaynesGarage Hi Katy! Yes, it was fixed two days ago. The real reason: shavings, apparently from the flywheel, on the engine speed sensor, not on the working side, but on the back, from the side of the contacts, that's why I didn't see them in the upper look window. Cleaned it up and it works like clockwork now.

@@garage_tales Thank you for your considered response. Silence is of course preferable. At one time in my working life I worked with wood using hand tools. They create their own soundtrack which can be pleasing to the soul. At one show where I was working with wood using hand tools to show how my furniture was made, I experimented with low volume Gregorian chants 👀🧐 A few liked that. A woodworking machine shop I used to visit had the radio blasting out very loud whilst everyone was working. Then they switched it off at lunchtime…!??? Very odd. I have a mate who also used to have the radio on loud all day. The music was the latest garbage. Nothing good. When the news came on it was delivered at a pace that attempted to make it exciting, as if to dumb down propaganda even more. Yes, it’s a thing here in UK too. When I asked my mate what he thought about something said on the news, he hadn’t heard it!! We don’t need noise. 🧐😎😜 Peace
