There's a lot of different ways to play D&D, as everybody has a different taste for adventure. But what's yours? As a DM the more styles you can run the better you are at the game. But do you know the difference between a funhouse dungeon and a regular dungeon crawl? If you wanted to run a railroad but avoid making it boring who do you look at for adventure? Worry not my friends, here are a dozen different styles of adventure, each with a corresponding adventure to help you see what they did right, and what you can steal from them to improve your game.

I find railroads are best for one-shots or side adventures. Have a goal, have an encounter, and have a small setting. Even a short dungeon crawl can serve as a way to set up all of the above.

I got into D&D as a wee lad because my Uncle forgot he was supposed to babysit and took me to a Dragon's Crown session. The group helped me make a character, but being six at the time, I never actually bought food or water. That's why I usually have 2-3 backup character concepts at any given time, should the current one face an untimely end!

I always loved D&D adventures that features a "journey", especially if it took the group over vast territory and diffrent terrains. One duo of adventures that stood out to me was Master of the Desert Nomads and the Temple of Death. I loved the journey just getting to the Master in an unknown land all the while traversing varied terrains which can pose just as much of a hazrad as the creatures that inhabit it. (a marsh, a huge desert, a snowy mountain pass).

Dungeon is my favorite style, personally, but I like a bit of funhouse mixed in by default. I like a series of rooms with an unknown combination of monsters, traps, and treasures and no chance within its walls to Long Rest(TM) and thereby give yourself infinite resources. If you try to rest in a dungeon there MUST be some form of Random Encounter generation to at least threaten otherwise-unnecessary combat as a risk/reward. And if you keep trying to clear out a room in 15 minutes with all your mages' spell charges, go all the way back to town or a safe wilderness camp to replenish, and return, the surviving monsters of the other rooms should get bigger and tougher guys from the lower levels to fill in the empty room and make your life a living hell for daring to do a 15 minute adventuring day. Ammunition management is crucial to making dungeon crawls fun, as are carrying capacity limits for managing the treasure itself. My ideal introductory adventure is one that simply does these things, but with traps that are unlikely to cause a kill completely on their own and monsters unlikely to cause a kill on a fully aware/mobile adventurer. I love introductory adventures, though my overall favorites are ones designed for veteran PLAYERS and characters who are low levels (like 1-3 if not 1-6).

Castle Greyhawk, the original dungeon for Dungeon & Dragons, was built by the crazed wizard Zagig Yragerne. From what I've read about it, it was defintiely as much Funhouse as Dungeon Crawl.

Give me a wilderness hex map sandbox any day. The forest are tree bark dungeons. Using books like into the Wyrd and Wild will make your players want to crawl into holes in the ground. I love using Keep on the Boardlands as a starting point and adding other adventures maybe even stealing Kingmaker from Paizo.

I never understood some players that complain about traveling to get to a dungeon crawl as getting in the way of the fun stuff. These players go through monsters, traps, and encounters in a dungeon and they say it was fun. Put the same encounters in the wilderness and they're all - are we there yet? A hex crawl is a dungeon with a sky above. 🤷‍♂️

Sub-category? What are some of the best pirate themed/related adventures of all time? N4 Treasure Hunt stands out for at least 2 reasons, one being that it is designed for zero level characters, who begin as shipwreck survivors, and two being that there is an NPC who has a real name, and sensible one I'm sure, but every time I read it my brain goes "Cheese-steak" and so can't remember his real name. 😅 a lot of zero level stuff nowadays, like for osr is in the gauntlet style, but this is different, it is intended for the PCs to survive (unless they are REALLLLLLY reckless ofc) so they just have the one, but it does introduce how hirelings work, because there are maybe a half dozen or so other survivors beyond the PCs who can be torch holder etc etc. There are weird things about it, like the amount of treasure seems pretty high, so you would divide that amongst the other survivors (as per the custom in the Korinn Archipelago) but that leaves them likely needing to sell their 10,000 GP galley which they just "liberated" and, that is kinda disappointing cos I feel like a good chunk of 1st level characters with their own small ship essentially are gonna want to do some pirate shit, and who could blame them.

Any campaign where the players and the DM buy into the FLAVOR of the campaign setting. SO tired of kitchen sink, eveyrhting goes, tiefling, dragonborn,warforged asimaar, sorlock sorcerer, Warlock, Wizard, Cleric, campaign settings. Just becuz the book provides the rules for "everything" doesnt mean you hav eto use all of them on every campaign :D

Great video Mr Welch! I’m running siege of Sukiskyn for my party next session. Any tips?
@Mr_Welch
@Mr_Welch 5 күн бұрын
More than I can answer in a short response. I'm going to make a video on it eventually. Keep the action flowing, don't have the party fight all the goblins at once. I would say make it almost episodic fight the goblins trying to steal stuff, then fight the goblins trying to breach the wall then fight the goblins trying to get into the manor house than protect some of the people. It is a massive part of the adventure and it's easy to get lost in the minutia

Personally I prefer to leave things to individual players, such as "Skip the story, Play the Game". Dungeons and Dragons is fun when you hear about the fun stories online or read up on plot points. Its not so much when you find out hat most good D&D stories are surrounded by bad ones. I hope to play Dungeoncrawls where a GM just makes dungeons and doesnt try to force every game to be a chapter in a novel. If they are making a novel then theyll change everything like the game rules to fit how they want to novel to go. Players Versus Dungeons is best to begin with. To Mr Welch, I havent joined a tabletop group in around 4.5 years. Will Dungeoncrawls ever come back, or are videogames the only way to experience that now?
