Glad you touched base on this subject I have owned my 96 850 non turbo for a few months now and my 1st oil change i just got standard type oil but last oil change I did Amsoil and it really seemed to wake the engine up as far as performance I was suspecting sludge I have put 5000 miles on it and I'm going to do the Amsoil again tomorrow... The car was sluggish before the Amsoil

Thanks for the info. Well, what I did was drained the sludge oil from the engine, but I didn't flush the engine nor clean the pan. I changed the oil filter and put 5 qts of oil back into the engine, let the engine ran for one hour in idle., and let the car sit overnight. The following day, I started it up again and allowed it to run in idle for one more hour. Shut it off, let it cool down for an hour, and took it out on a run for about 4 miles (6.44 km) or so. Before I did any of that, the car was sputtering, running hot and had very little pressure. All that's gone now, the car seems to run just fine.

Good for you. I think it's best to drive the car for at least 30 minutes to heat the oil up faster and get pressure up higher.

I ones had a friend, he's past away years ago, but he enharated a 444, station wagon from his grandfather, at that time it had run for 86000 Swedish miles, which is 860000 km, the only thing they ever did on that engine, was the recommended oil and filter change, besides change of normal wear parts, they changed oil and filter every 10000 km, and always the recommended oil from Volvo. My friend had the car several years after that, and drove ove 150000 km in it, made the same changes of oil, filter etc. and at the end, he changed car, got a new 164 and the 444 at a Volvo museum. So, you are absolutely right, never flush engine with anything, keep the service intervals is the best thing for a Volvo.

From my experience, just use high quality engine oil (Liqui Moly, Motul, Amsoil) and high quality oil filter (Mann, Bosch, OE). Do not use any engine flush. Sludge will be gone in 3 to 4 oil changes. You can also shorten change interval if you see that oil turns black.

I am new to your channel. I found it very informative. I have a question in regard to Sludge. I have a 2020 Nissan Murano. I recently experienced white smoke coming out of my exhaust. I had no engine lights or oil alerts. I took it in to the Dealership they said I had sludge and needed a new Engine. I admit I had not been committed to the Proper Maintenance. Is it too late to save the Engine?

Thank you for this video! I have been experiencing oil issues for about 3 months now in my 2017 Hyundai sonata. I scheduled an appt with my Hyundai dealership immediately after noticing that the oil needed to be replaced before my next service. I have had my car since 2019 and always did my servicing on time, so it was a shock to see that ALL of the oil was gone within 3 weeks of my last service (about 1000 miles. the dealership couldn’t get me in for 3 months, so in that time I checked my oil levels every day and topped off when needed. Once the dealership looked at my car and did an oil consumption test, they validated that my engine is consuming the oil at a high rate. Unfortunately, Hyundai will not replace my engine because it is out of warranty. My spark plugs were replaced, but everything else is in good shape (for now). I was told that my best bet is to purchase a new engine or trade it in, because if I continue to drive the car I will start to experience other issues. Any tips on what I can do to save my car? Or am I going to have to do what was recommended?
@RobertDIY
@RobertDIY Жыл бұрын
Ouch! Glad you realized that it's consuming oil. The question is, where is the oil going? If it's going pass the rings, it is also going through the Catalytic converter. Eventually it will start to clog the Cat and toss a CEL (Check Engine Light) causing you to fail emissions testing. A clogged Cat can also cause performance issues where the vehicle will run slower and slower. An important question is what is wrong withing the engine that is causing it to consume oil at that rate? It that a common issue with those engines? Would it be cheaper to have the engine rebuilt or replaced? You are doing the best and correct thing by checking the level weekly and keeping it topped up. You can try to reduce consumption by going up one level in oil viscosity: example, using 10W-30 instead of 5W-30, of 5W-30 instead of 5W-20. See if that helps (also see if the owner's manual allows for a thicker viscosity oil with a hotter climate). Ultimately you may want to sell the vehicle or trade it in on a vehicle that doesn't have those issues, if this is a common issue with those cars. :(

I'm having the same problem with my 2017 sonata as well. It seems to be a problem with these style of engines. I've also done the same thing as you where the dealership did an oil consumption test and they pretty much told me the same thing. I'm wondering if you found a solution or found a way to help the car other than an engine swap. Thank you!

I failed a smog test because of their "snap" test. They let the car sit for a few minutes then rev the engine to 3k rpms. If smoke comes out then its a fail. Mine had smoke and after reading forums and watching videos I think its either head gasket or seals. My car does not smoke unless it idles for a while. It does not smoke while driving. Any idea to determine if it is seals or head gasket?
@TheAdrianoos
@TheAdrianoos 3 жыл бұрын
It sounds like valve stem seals. I have great experience using Liqui Moly Oil Leak Stop, but you should be careful, because it changes oil viscosity. I recommend using it only in hot climates (above 0 degree Celsius).

Plenty of things to do before emissions testing on older cars. Change the spark plugs, clean your mass air flow sensor with a good maf cleaner like CRC, have someone run a diagnostic tool on your car to check if your O2 and afr sensors are good, fresh oil and coolant, change the gas, air and oil filters. If your distributor is old; it might be a good idea to replace it. If you're still have smoke after all that; your valve seals are likely shot. If your coolant level rises after turning the car off and/or if you see bubbles on your oil dipstick; it's the head gasket. Edit: Use premium gas and install ONLY oem parts.

Not sure what kind of car you have but if it's one of the white block Volvo's, it's likely valve stem seals. Volvo even has a message in the owner's manual not to let these cars sit idle because by design (they are built broke), they can smoke when sitting idle. Chances are it's the seals and/or the PCV system needs to be serviced. When I use to do pre smog is change oil to thicker oil just before smog, then drain and fill with proper oil after smog.

Great advice. I have a question if you don't mind. I have a 2009 Pontiac Vibe 2.4L that seems to be burning a lot of oil in between oil changes. So, I do have to add a bit more oil in between oil change intervals. (It definitely is not leaking oil). My question is: What is causing the oil to burn?
@RobertDIY
@RobertDIY 3 жыл бұрын
Worn rings, bad valve stem seals, cracked block, etc. I would do a compression test. If the numbers are low, it is likely engine wear blow by in the pistons.
@tomasnokechtesledger1786
@tomasnokechtesledger1786 3 жыл бұрын
You could look for excess blowby taking the oil cap out while engine idles.

That’s because you do regular oil changes. In your case it’s probably not doing anything but also isn’t harming anything. The issue is when people use engine flushes when the sludge has already built up and it flushes it around the system.

That's not a good procedure. You strip out all the antwear layer already built in, from the parts. New oil will have to build up a New layer again. It take a while. So you can be wearing your engine faster by lack of an antiwear layer until it builds itsef up.
