Karate generally stems from wing chun and white crane boxing and jujitsu is snake mix the two together Cobra Kai but most don't look at jujitsu in this fashion but think about it in a fight what animal with speed lightening fast speed are you imitating ? Then after striking you are literally wrapping around it crushing it cutting off the blood air supply you're doing kung fu bro in the movie you got Pat Morita standing ona post imitating a crane raising the arms distracting attacker hopping up and kicking moving gracefully everyone in karate kid was showing the different contrast of karate self defense va aggressive vs sport or tournament in next karatekid they went to monastry to pay respect tribute to the Zen Buddhist monks Myagi say his ancestors bring Karate from China to Okinawa

Even though I've been nto traditional TKD (ITF) and spent 8 years on amateur competitive kickboxing and muay thai, I only recently got into Karate. I tried Shotokan which was, meh , then joined my local Kyokushin-kan dojo that also trains for Shinken Shobu tournaments (i.e. punches to the face) and never looked back. I'm still a 10th kyu but I love it. Btw, I respectfully disagree with Jesse on Aikido and Wing Chun. BJJ or (Judo as Seth said), is a much more humbling experience for the budding karateka. You think your bunkai (and fitness) is good until you start grappling with those mofos.
@MrAchillesM

@@douglasmacneil4474 That's cheesy. Are you sure you actually rolled with these guys? They roll >5 hours per week. Grappling a grappler is something you simply can't deal with when you come from a striking background. Karate is cool, but let's not get carried away.

@@douglasmacneil4474 I don't know man, I'm happy that your karate works for your and mr Darrell. Not sure how Karate's footwork prepares you for the buttefly guard but if it works for you, go for it. For each his own. Yep, actually kids with background in karate, tae kwon do, wrestling, gymnastics, ie sports with lots of mobility, jumping, eye hand coordination, etc tend to become better athletes in general.

@@douglasmacneil4474 We used to say the same in my old TKD dojo, that TKD is misanderstood, it has grappling techniques in tuls (kata), hosinsul (self-defence) and free sparring, bla bla bla. But I beg to differ. Basic sweeps, throws and clinching are transferable skills, but what I've found the most ineffective mindset is that some don't know what they don't know. I mean fundamental stuff is good for da streetz but you learn more about grappling in 6months of rolling or wrestling, than in 20 years of Karate or TKD.
@MrAchillesM
@MrAchillesM 4 жыл бұрын
@@douglasmacneil4474 It depends on what you're looking for. If you want a "complete" style chances are you're not really going for any traditional art anyways. Wrestling/bjj and kick boxing is all you need. TKD ITF's competition is virtually like wako full contact, it doesn't resemble shotokan. Most dojos in my country used to fight in both organisations (ITF and WAKO). It's a bastardised version of karate, Hwarang do, taekkyon and the various Korean kwans but that's another story. Tuls are similar to eg pinan, (with a bit more kicking and acrobatics), so you'll find your throws there; thus also in Hosinsul (TKD's bunkai). I just don't think any karateka can stand his ground against a grappler in a grappling match. This shouldn't be controversial, there's nothing you can say to convince me otherwise. But I do agree that takedown defence (and clinch) is important.

I did Goshin-Ryu as my first martial art as a kid until a teenager and I still train a lot of what I learned from it. I can’t speak for any other schools of that style but our Sensei used to tell us the history and logic for everything we did and he said it was a blend of several styles and was supposed to be very practical. We sparred very lightly very early on and towards the end of my time at the school we did some pretty heavy sparring with all the striking and grappling we learned. I learned a lot and I think it made my BJJ and MMA training easier and helped me mix it up better than if I went straight to mma.

this is such a great convo. in my school we learn our "style" but then as black belts you learn shotokan kata, goju kata, and several other "styles" as well. there is also have a very wholistic approach to karate and it's so good to see that same mindset getting out from you two guys and karate culture too.

@@douglasmacneil4474 I like your brain, Paul! My one complaint about Capo is it's usually 'swinging to miss' and I was hoping I could find someone who I could test some bull rushes and spinning grabs and such on. This town is pretty chill and I was hoping to find some people who I could be a bit more outside the box with. It's been 20 odd years since the last time I was into martial arts and I've learned a lot about biomechanics in the interim, so I'm trying a different starting point and trying to make my foundation natural brachiation movements and "oh crap" reflexes we apes have and THEN start adding the human stuff. :) It's been really rewarding so far, but my sensei is basically David Attenborough (Seth has been helping though!).

@@ThatFreeWilliam where do you live? Capoeira can be good for that moving around. There are also useful takedowns and sweeps that can applied as well. And also, capoeira tries to teach wider stance which makes some of those moves difficult, but most fighters nowadays usually keep more narrow/linear stances which would favor a capoeiraista. Not to mention some basic moves will carry over, like the basic kicks.

Awesome interview, thanks a lot to both of you for taking time to do this and share the knowledge. I heard you said you teach take downs in your dojo that's great, but check this bunkai of gedan barai. Gedan barai doesn't mean 'block' it means low sweep, it doesn't say uke. So here's the bunkai. The hand (right) that goes up to your ear you use that brush opponent's arms out the way as you step in(basic way is to push opponent's lead left wrist against opponent's shoulder or bicep ) You scoop up opponent's left leg with your left hand. Now you pull with your left and push/strike with your right. Use the low stance as well to give balance. Hope you try it out.

If my memory serves me correctly, one of the founding fathers of MMA, Ken Shamrock took a similar route (albeit much higher level). Both styles fill in the gaps that the other doesn't have.

I remember sparring a capoeira guy and a bujinkan practitioner. I got to do it several times. The main one I encounter is TKD, and their so many kicks. The weirdest thing was the capoeira, I remember catching the leg every now and then but would be put off balance even as I grounded my stance. I considered somehow sweeping which ever leg he was standing on. Or just closing it if I could jamming up his ability to move. It was really hard to time it. For the bujinkan guy, he did so many grabs and pressure holds, I could only encounter or get out of some of them. At kicking range, I could keep him away, as he didn't really learn or do kicks but once he got close, it was a grab and joint lock and pressure. That speed and efficiency at doing them was something to get used to. TKD of course was anyone with long legs and quick and strong pushing kicks. I remember one TKD guy esp, he was super dang tall with long ass legs. I think I preferred trying to be quicker and close the distance so I could better strike with punches or kicks evens. Getting kicked by him wasn't fun, but he was careful to control it. With the other black belts it was game on though between them. Now these matches were a sight to see. Black Belt Karate vs Black Belt TKD. There was another TKD practitioner who was shorter than me even, so for them, I had to just time my strikes and kicks as I knew I could reach but I still had to be careful.

But now after teaching for 35 years, I still want to teach as I learned because I know it worked for me and everyone else that trained. But, everyone’s saying you must “disguise repetition”. What’s your feelings on this. I’ve tried class plans and sometimes they work but other times, not so much.

Which Karate style is the best? Look, there are basically just two lineages - Shuri Te(Shorin Ryu, Shotokan), Naha Te(Goju Ryu, Uechi Ryu), and the styles that combine both(Shito Ryu, Kyokushin). It's best to study both linages to have a well rounded understanding of Karate. You don't want to just learn Naihanchi without also learning Sanchin.

gotta love (or not) the way karatecas know so much about their art and how it is very complete and "OG MMA" and all styles are somehow similar to it instead of doing actual research on other martial arts that were "OG MMA" long before karate or the little important details that make each style unique. But heck its a karate collab between two karate channels wtf im doing here bye

At my club, we had a visitor from another Kyokushinkai dojo. He had recently started doing karate, but had several years of TKD behind him. In the first kumite training, he landed a tornado kick in the face of his partner, a 40 year old guy, built like a refrigerator. He had been going very lightly on his much younger sparring partner, but after the reckless tornado, that changed. He started to go in with really heavy low kicks to the inside of the thighs on the TKD guy, which he had no idea how to defend against, and follow them up with hammering punches to the chest - the thing us Kyokushinkai guys do so good, fighting really close to the opponent. The TKD kid went out of the dojo walking very bow-legged and probably thought once or twice before trying that fancy stuff in kumite again.

I don’t know if people consider Daido juku Kudo a karate style but I think is probably the best even the one I like most is kyokushin and American full contact karate benny urquidez and Don Wilson and all that guys. They had a great fighting style so smooth but brutal at the same time. Stephen Thompson has a similar way of fighting so beautiful striking style.

Why isn't Tai Chi mentioned?? The style I learn is over 150 years old. It's so informative. Push hands - fixed and moving - applications. Stances. We taught Bruce Lee the one inch punch. Breathing, everything. Recently we're getting Karate and other martial arts guys coming and they're amazed at the level of training and depth and of course the history.

What's the most fluid out of the karate styles because while I do like the simplicity of karate over kung fu I'm not a huge fan of how a lot of karate masters look like they're taking a s*** every time they throw a punch. It just kind of astounds me how much of a lack of relaxation that almost repels me from karate

Personally, I think the greatest takeaway when it comes to acquiring any martial arts skills is the importance of dedication, discipline, drive, determination, willpower, brother- and sisterhood, and living truthfully. Good character is truly vital in being a good martial artist as well as an overall good person.

What i have gathered from karate is that its for taking the oponent down and ending the fight with a single blow (after watching many videos atleast). Hence the practice of breaking bricks in karate, take down break open. But muay thai and kickboxing seems to be endurance, i see it all the time in style vs style fights, if a karate guy is fighting a muay thai guy one of them always ends up mimicing the other. It seems the guy thats doing worse in the match tends to revert back to the bruce lee style lol crazy but true

I'm gonna get lit up for this, but do Karate styles even vary that greatly in movement and what they focus on? At my Kung Fu school, we joke about other Kung Fu styles sometimes, but there are some wildly different things going on in the different styles. Our style tends to focus more on kicking and it requires a lot more flexibility than other styles. Which isn't to say you won't see lots of crossover still. Like you guys said, the body only moves in so many ways. I'm not shitting on it, but it seems like Karate is less diverse. If one is effective, they would likely all be similarly effective.That could also just be what it looks like from the outside. And obviously it all boils down to the person.

Karate styles are massively different. I switched from WKF Shotokan to IOGKF Goju Ryu and it's an entirely different school of thought and a very different way of looking at range and body dynamics. It took me 2 years until my Karate started being actually more Goju Ryu. I also did Kyokushin for a while and this one, again, is vastly different from the other two, while you could tell that much of it is rooted in Goju Ryu. Where it becomes same-y is within the WKF, which is a global sport karate organization focused on point fighting and kata performance tournaments and becoming an olympic sport. This is the most widespread "brand" of Karate and probably what most people out there have seen or were presented as Karate. On paper, they include Shotokan, Goju Ryu, Wado Ryu and Shito Ryu, but in practice it's become more and more a single, standarized, competition oriented style, which is understandable, because rules and judging will dictate what gets trained and how things are done, effectively forcing everyone into line. This has done away with most traditional elements of the respective styles as well as their own intricacies and concepts, which is why it all ends up looking and functioning kinda the same.
