The worst thing about winter in the uk isn’t the cold or the rain, it’s the dark. Once the clocks change things start to get really gloomy and you live for the cold, clear, crisp, sunny days which don’t come around nearly often enough

As an Australian who spent 2 months overall in England this past Summer (mostly in London), I'm already missing many aspects, like the £3 meal deals from Tesco/Sainsbury's, the amazing public transportation, Wetherspoon pubs, and overall it was just a more entertaining place than Sydney (The people and amount of things happening). Maybe I'll return one day when I have a skill that somewhat pays and doesn't suck my soul dry (Not bartending, lol!). Trying to be grateful for what I have, but still....

Yes, I think it's the size and density with the incredible diversity of terrain and local culture that might be quite unique combination in the UK. I love it that still in the 21 century you can still travel 20 miles and the accent, culture and history is different. That's, from my works travels seems fairly unique. In many ways the UK is a perfect size. It's small but that is what has created the variety

Born and brought up in the UK, moved to Melbourne, Australia in 2001 and never regretted it - I think Sydney weather is the worst - simply too hot and humid - Melbourne is popular with Brits due to the cooler and more varied weather - it is much more tolerable. I do agree though that the UK is more varied with cultures and history, all in a smaller area, but I never liked winter there, just seemed to always be grey and gloomy for weeks on end. What pushed me to come here was that I got sick of the 90's rat race trying to outdo and out-earn everyone else. Was just too toxic. Melbourne was so chill and relaxed, saved my sanity :-)

British/Aussie dual citizen here. Although I agree with your list, I will point out the BIGGEST counter for me: in Aus, they have this weird idea that if you work full time you're not poor. That idea has not caught on in the UK at all. London doesn't count, it might as well be its own country (avg. wage for 22-29 yr olds in London is £10k+/yr higher than in Wales). Throughout the rest of the UK, it is perfectly possible to work 40 hours a week and never be able to afford a new car or your own home. Minimum wage is soul destroying.

I think the UK developed a pub culture because it's so cold. So in the winter the only place in the village with warmth would be the pub. So everyone would congregate there to keep warm, play music and chat to friends. That culture has been maintained while now every house is warm. There is still that pub culture with blazing fire, comfy chairs, music and so on.

in terms of holiday, if memory serves statutory minimum holiday for a full time employee in the UK is 4 weeks (20 days) - plus 8 days bank holidays (or time in lieu if working over them). many decent places offer an additional week, but its not guaranteed. some places will trade back unused holiday for pay if you don't take it (rare). some places will cancel all leave if you don't take it (common), some places will allow a predefined limit of holiday that can be carried over (also common). For example, I can take up to 5 days over to the next holiday year.

It's different tho. Here in Florida it will rain almost everday in the summer from about 2pmish to maybe 4 or 5pm, but absolutely tip it down. Thunder, lightning, and an inch or 2 of rain, and you can see it coming. Unless there's some type of tropical storm, it never rains all day and is rarely overcast all day. There's nothing like the weather down here I've seen it rain on one side of the street and be sunny on the other. All that while being 90+f (32+c) 100% humidity 300ish days a year. The UK reminds me more of Seattle in terms of rain then Florida. It either rains all day or threaten to then goes dark and cold.

Yevette, I love your accent! Don’t have a downer on Australia, I loved visiting it, Manly is my favourite beach! Just a quick comment. I know you live in the South East of England, but and it’s a big but, when you are describing the “Country/nation”, many get offended in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland if you describe the others as “England”. My advice would be to say the U.K. if you are describing the country.

I really liked Secret Life of Us. That was great, or at least the first two seasons were, before they scattered the original group of characters. It made Melbourne seem like a very cool place to live (in your twenties). I've no idea how true that is. It also introduced me to the whole Australian pop music environment of the time, which was really interesting, because it was the same but different, with all these trends and genres appearing by parallel evolution. That was before the internet, or at least before me having internet access, so it's easier to notice music from other places now. So I guess I'm saying Australia isn't that much of a pop cultural desert. There's good stuff there, just on a lower investment base because of the smaller population.

Outside of Sydney you have Wollongong, central coast, Newcastle, Coffsharbour, blue mountains, Katoomba, even Canberra. Sydney to Brisbane is a 10hour drive and there are $50 flights on Jetstar. Also Sydney is really a collection of towns. Bankstown (Arab and Asian area) is completely different to Cronulla (white middle class), which is different to the north Shore (white upper class and Asian)

And about the weather, I can't live in extreme heat. I live in Ukraine, in the south coast and it gets about - 15 to - 20 in winter. If you dress well and get used to being cold, I think cold is more tolerable. I like walking in ankle deep snow too. I'm actually from Turkey, we don't have that harsh winters in coast areas, and back then I hater winter without even experiencing winter proper. In Turkey, people say they're dying from the cold in -6 celcius, which is nothing to me. So I think it's all about how much you're used to the cold.

Why the emphasis on RSLs (Returned and Services League)? They are but one of numerous types of similar clubs in Australia, many are based around sports (football, bowling, etc), some are 'workers' clubs, and so on. I've never heard anyone before equate them with pubs (of which there are also many in Australia). Sure, they have a bar, but they usually have good dining at cheap prices, often have live shows or show movies, are usually family oriented and often provide facilities for all sorts of local community clubs and groups to meet and call home. The 'pokies' essentially fund much of their operations. In country towns they may be the main community venue. Membership is usually only about 10 dollars year (golf clubs would be an exception). As an example, a local Catholic Club near me has several eateries, a multi-story accommodation hotel, multi-storey car parks, ballroom dancing, bingo, raffles, shows, a large gym, mini-golf and even a full size ice rink. Plus it provides facilities for lots of smaller informal clubs (Toastmasters, 50 Plus, Fishing, etc.) and even discounted member holiday venues on the coast. Can't think of too many pubs that do that.

Donald Boughton Yup, mine started at 21 days plus 8 bank holidays, and added an extra day each year until you reach 25 days + 8. This year come early October my boss came to me and said “you’ve got 6 days to take off before Christmas”, so I took last Friday, Monday and Tuesday off, next week I’m taking Thursday and Friday off, I’ve got the Friday before Christmas too. Last year I ended up taking off every Monday between Remembrance Day and the week before Christmas. Of course, we also finish on Dec 24th and don’t go back until Jan 2nd... I think in 40 years’ of work, I’ve been in the office for a day between Christmas and New Year about 10 times.

English pubs used to serve just basic food. When my Dad was young you could pretty much only order a ploughmans or chips, stuff like that but then they didn't go out to eat much. In recent decades especially in the countryside they've become more like restaurants because people eat out a lot and also there's not much profit in just serving drinks unless it's a city pub that's very busy all the time. Countryside pubs need to serve decent food to survive

Interesting one this. I always found RSL clubs feel like airport terminal bars. They are huge and have very little character. The inner city pubs in Australian cities can be really nice and have plenty of character, but I still find British pubs to be on a level hard to find anywhere else, with the exception of Ireland. I will correct you on NZ/Aus differences though, completely different flora & fauna, landscape, climate and significantly different culture as well, but yeah, UK offers a huge amount in such a small island. As for rain, it certain rains more in the North. Manchester may only be two hours away by train, but you notice the difference and you can see how the ground is such a deeper green about an hour after starting the journey North from London.
