The TV license is a wonderful thing. Australia used to have this too, but stopped it a while back. Since then, the ABC has deteriorated. So, the whole point of the TV license is to allow the BBC to be completely commercial free and free of government influence. (If it were paid for by tax, the government could control it and if it were paid for by commercials or subscription, it would only care about what sells which is not always what is best). Anyway, as you can see, I'm quite fond of it. You get a huge amount for the TV license as it is not just the TV channels. It's also the iPlayer, all those radio stations (and when you take into account all the local ones there are a lot), the huge website, BBC Sounds and the news organisation (which is the world's largest and as unbiased as is possible) plus all the educational stuff, the lack of ads, the cooking study, it really is an amazing amount - it also fosters a huge amount of talent which is why the UK punches so far above its weight for quality TV. Lots of other countries still have TV licenses, especially in Europe, but you don't get anywhere near as much as here for the money
@warrensmith8606
@warrensmith8606 4 жыл бұрын
Wow, are you living 40 years ago? BBC is extremely biased now. Also the government do have powers with the bbc, it is not free of government influence. In addition, the whole Jimmy Saville scandal, Panodrama and tv licence agents bullying people. To have to pay the bbc money to watch other channels is scandalous. Thank god Boris is gonna sort it out and we can be finally rid of this unfair system
@joc6516

Warren Smith no, I’m just not extreme left or extreme right and as someone who actually works in the television industry with a good elevated view of how each news organization reacts, I am totally confident in disagreeing with you 100%. Independent reports have shown that not only is the BBC one of the least biased news organizations in the world (not just the UK) but that people who say otherwise are of equal proportions from the left and right! If both the extreme left and extreme right are equally claiming it is biased, then it must be doing something right. I know I will never be able to convince any person who believes otherwise and I don’t really care, but considering the industry information I have access to, over random anonymous people on the Internet who say otherwise, I think I’ll go for the industry sources. This is not to say they are perfect and don’t make mistakes. No organization or human is. But I’d pit it against any news organization you supply with a claim of less bias any day
@warrensmith8606
@warrensmith8606 4 жыл бұрын
@@joc6516 It's plain as day to see that the BBC has a huge left wing bias. I don't care what your biased "industry sources" say. Someone who begins their post with "The tv licence is a wonderful thing". Get out of here man, i think you'll find the vast majority of the people disagree with you. Mass opinion tends to be a good indication with regards to these things really. The population aren't as dumb as you think they are. Lets see some nice evidence from ordinary folk who struggle to make ends meet and have to put up with their bull shall we: uk.trustpilot.com/review/www.bbc.co.uk. And as a classical liberal/centrist it isn't because im on the far right that i think the bbc is teetering on the edge of far left. I dont pit the bbc against other news organisations. They're all terrible and biased but the bbc is meant not to be and yet is and this is one of the major problems with it. Fair enough man, you have your opinion, but you're so far out of touch with Joe Bloggs it's unreal. And i'm just "uneducated" right.... yeah yeah, heard it all before. 52% of the British public are uneducated racist scum apparently. Like i say..........so out of touch..........

I'm so glad you mentioned 'Red Dwarf'. That would've been my first recommendation. My second personal favourite is 'Spaced', starring and co-written by Simon Pegg, and directed by Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz). I can't agree that Buffy jumped the shark. That show was great till the end, and is by far my favourite American show of all time. I was 22 when it first over here in England. And still watch it every few years. Along with Red Dwarf.

I must have missed the part where you talk about the great British Drama series... Downton Abby, Poldark or Game of Thrones one of the biggest TV shows in history and stands up against American Crime Dramas like the Wire, Sons of Anarchy or Breaking Bad. British theatre tradition is our great gift to the world and our state sponsored TV industry has enabled innovation and creativity that might never have got off the ground in a strictly profit driven market. The BBC can 'commission' a program or series and underwrite the costs.

Hi Yvette, I don’t know if you mean modern show recommendations but in terms of UK Comedy I would recommend Blackadder, Bottom, Coupling, Spaced and The Royle Family. Panel shows as they are now owe alot to Never Mind the Buzzcocks (especially the Mark Lamarr years as host) and for Drama/Crime/Occasional Dark Comedy I think you would really like Jonathan Creek which stars Alan Davies from QI. I’m from Scotland and Still Game is massive here but I don’t know how well it would travel to an International audience. I also really like Your Face or Mine with Jimmy Carr and Katherine Parkinson but its on Comedy Central so doesn’t seem to get the same level of attention as other shows. We seem to have really similar taste when it comes to TV so hopefully theres something here that you’ll enjoy.

If you like panel shows, and you like silliness, check out "Shooting Stars"; a madcap quiz hosted by comedians Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer - very silly, very funny. Each week they would have a couple of celebrities on (who'd often look very out of their comfort zone), and the rounds would usually be interspersed by bizarre and abstract sketches.

I watch the circle Update: Oh my goodness you’re saying what I’ve been saying for years! Us show last too long, they always start good but very often end badly because the show went on for too long and all the writers and creators lose the plot or leave and get replaced. So then the plot changes anyways. The UK get it all done with 6 episodes in 3 or four series’ and always leave the viewers wanting more, therefore stapling that show to the classic board making people love it forever. That happens often in the UK 🇬🇧.

Coupling is another comedy well worth watching. It ran from 2000 to 2004 for 4 series and it's essentially a look at men vs women, playing on how they think and act differently. you should check out Spaced with Simon Pegg - out just before Peep Show but I think you'll enjoy the humour. It was on Channel 4. There are one or two really good American comedies too, Always Sunny in Philidelphia on Netflix, and Seinfeld used to be one of my favourites too. Also if you liked the inbetweeners you'd really like Fresh Meat on Channel 4 and Man Down on the same channel.

Task master is brilliant, a group of comedians doing different tasks but on their own and then watch how hey all did. Very funny, celebrity juice is a funny easy to watch naughty panel show and for drama The Tunnel is one of the best Iv seen recently 🙌🏼

If you like Peep Show try and find Spaced.. it features Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.. it effectively launched their careers. The director of Spaced then worked with them again in their "Cornetto" film triology.. Saun of the Dead (where a lot of the Spaced fan base acted as zombies), Hot Fuzz and finally Worlds End. They are known as the Cornetto trilogy .. er.. well.. despite facing apocalyptic scenarios .. they always had time to eat an ice cream. I think Olivia Coleman was in Hot Fuzz... Rosamund Pike was in Saun of the Dead.. Pearce Brosnan in Worlds End.. all playing dead pan comedy roles. The fight scene in the pub (Sean of the Dead) was played out in rhythm to Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now"

A bunch of other two thousands comedy’s to go with IT Crowd that I really liked were black books, farther Ted, Coupling, Two Pints of Lager And A Packet Of Crisps, Green Wing. Also to go with Red Dwarf if you haven’t seen Blackadder yet you absolutely need to! And a current one in a similar vain is Upstart Crow

To repeat a couple of people from down below. *Detectorists*. Gentle, warm, but sharp and often hilarious observations about friendships and relationships in a countryside setting in East England. Brilliantly written (and directed ?) by McKenzie Crook (aka Gavin from The Office) and also starring him (and Emma Thompson's sister, Diana Rigg and her daughter - Rachel Stirling) and Toby Jones. The characterizisation from the supporting cast is also superb. (Two stand out bits for me are the post-Roman burial/seeing how the land changes flashback with the Unthanks soundtrack, and the brilliantly crafted homage to the Amish barn-raising scene in 'Witness', in the final episode - complete with jarring 80s Harold Faltermeyer style synth music - and lemonade!)
