I knew a guy in high school who had one...short wheel base, 327, three on the tree, 50's on back, 70's on front. Believe it or not, he could pull the wheels off the ground when he hit second gear.

Some good information there. I've owned my Model A for 50 years and finally got it restored in 1997 with a lot of help. Now it's much harder to find anyone left to help with my Model A problems. Internal bickering has been another big destructive factor for the local Model A clubs.But the car still speaks for itself as something enjoyable to own.

That's a shame about your local club. All I can say is to put the pressure on the officers and make them change. Run for office yourself and try to make a difference, or start your new club. jack

I have learned a lot watching your videos! What type of motor oil do you use and do you add any Zinc to the oil? Also, what about unleaded gas? Do you put a lead additive in the gas ? Or do you have hard valve seats in the head?
@JackBahmlll
@JackBahmlll 7 жыл бұрын
Fred, I don't get hung up on the oil thing. People go round and round on this subject. The A engine is tough and does not care what oil you put in as long as you keep it clean. Detergent or not. Use any 30 wt or 10w30 or 40. One of my cars seems to like the Rotella oil by Shell. a bit pricey, but good stuff. No additives. Any gas that will run it. This is just my opinion, and a lot of people will disagree. Change the oil every 500 mi, or more on a long trip. The main thing is to drive it a lot.

I've tried several times to make a difference in three different Model A Clubs. I've even tried starting my own club for a while. I can't go into all the details here but maybe the main problem is guys who seek power, like to be in charge and will do whatever it takes to remove anyone who questions or opposes them. They call it politics but the local old car clubs are all in decline (to my knowledge at least) because of it.

Skidding of any kind at either end does not "contribute to braking" and no properly engineered automobile is designed with "skid braking". And "Henry" didn't get his hands dirty. Ever. So of course he didn't grease anything.

My buddy just got a 1930 Tudor Sedan and I was wondering if they came with tools, jack, crank/lug wrench...and where they would be stored. I'm guessing under the back seat? The car is sweet and already restored but a few things still need doing. It's going to be a driver not a garage queen.
@JackBahmlll
@JackBahmlll 6 жыл бұрын
The tools are for show and your ego. Add a small toolbox behind the front bumper and put your own tools in it. They all came with tools and crank and jack. Put a good, small scissors jack under your seat.
@yourhandlehere1
@yourhandlehere1 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, hey thanks...I was just curious where the factory stuff would have been stored and the back seat is the only place I could see. I helped him install a rack and a trunk yesterday but the trunk won't be for tools and he's adding some more gauges and lights. (Personally, I would have left it alone, but to each his own.) He's also trying to decide on a windshield wiper, he said some won't let the window open. I said just get a long handled squeegee and put the passenger to work if you get caught in the rain. Sigh...then I guess we'll have to get Fedoras and tommy guns for parades and shows, lol.

My first Model A was purchased 54 years ago before there was much in the way of what to look for - but since I was 14 at the time, I probably wouldn't have found it anyway. I invested $10 in that Model A, and just pulled it in the garage a couple hours ago after driving it this afternoon here in Silicon Valley. So, were there things about the car I didn't know? Oh, yes. But now since more serious money needs to be invested in a Model A, this sort of checklist is very worthwhile, so you have some idea where you stand, even with a "project car".

Jack, this was so helpful. I just got through installing the bronze impregnated discs and springs in my '30 Coupe Deluxe's drag link and tie rods and tightening the pitman arm, it had a little play but once tightened it stiffened up. I'm about to tackle the brakes so this video helps with that too, I will be using Les Andrew's book as a guide. Enjoy each of your videos. Keep 'em coming!

He probably has too much oil in the pan. Make sure the dip stick goes all the way in. If not, people over fill it. There is no seal at the dip stick hole. I assume the sound is the ahooga horn. Get one and adjust it. jack

How much room behind the steering wheel is there? I'm a " big" guy!
@JackBahmlll
@JackBahmlll 7 жыл бұрын
A town sedan would give you room, but not a pick up, coupe, or maybe a roadster. Regular 4 door and tudor would probably have enough room. Get one. A lot out there and they don't cost much. You should be a pretty decent "wrench" to enjoy it.

Can I adjust the brakes in a way that the front brakes will lock first?
@JackBahmlll
@JackBahmlll 6 жыл бұрын
No, the A was designed as a rear wheel skid system. Modern cars are front skid. I don't think you could ever get the front to lock up on pavement. Some guys say that they can get all four wheels to lock, but it must be on gravel. When you do get them to where they stop, leave them alone. Also, while you are adjusting them, don't get fooled by brake fade that will occur if they get hot. Good luck.

James Wil Keep your model a stock. Much more fun. Easy to sell and work on. Two national clubs and a ton of local clubs. It is not a go fast car. If you are in a hurry, don’t get a model a.
@jameswil7687
@jameswil7687 6 жыл бұрын
Jack Bahm there ain't nothing about me that's "fast", hahaha! I was just wondering if doing those things would help the car preform a little better in today's time's. From what I understand, they topped out at 55-65mph. And I'm pretty sure that wouldn't be good on the engine. No I'm not look to go 150mph in it, just wanting to lower the RPM's some while driving at 50-55mph.

Jack Bahm I already have my grandfather's 1962 Ford F-100. It's a base model step side, two owner (his mother and him), and only 78k original miles! I'm going to keep it mostly stock but I'm changing out the 3.70 LSD for a 3.60-3.55 LSD. Adding an overdrive unit. And putting a boxed frame under it. Just things to improve it a little and make it run a little better when being drove at 65mph for four hours straight.
