I just found my first Finnish M39 I’ve seen in person while working a local show. The gun is practically 100% perfect condition. The guy told me it was a arsenal refinish. I was blown away by its beauty and had to have it. My shop was kind enough to pick it up for me so I could put it on layaway. It was priced at $1,300 but the seller let it go for $950 which I thought was fantastic. Now my collection has a Finnish m39 as well as a 91/59.

Thar 1891 Mosin, it is really interesting one. I have used just that one in my army year 1972-73. It was not as a service rifle for me but it was a gun I used in woods when we were not using hard ammo. In target shootings was done with M39. That 1891 was captured from reds in 1918 and it has been used in Russo-Japan war, WW1 and in Finland 1018, It has been in action in both Winter War and Continuation War and in training 1974. I had to check the sefial number in my notebook.

So I had been looking for a Mosin for years and after watching many videos wanted a M44. None of the gun shops around me carry any old riffles really except this one shop that has 8,000 guns for sale in it. They are wicked pricy there but will be the best chance to get what you are hunting for. They had like 15 mosins out on display but no M44’s. I asked the owner and he goes to one of his crates in the back room and pulls out the most best to hell gun ever. It was a 44 and was I horrible shape and he wanted $350 for it. He said the whole crate of them are unfinished in that shape. I decided to pass on it. Next I tried looking for a finish variant of the gun and again no luck. Then one day at my local gun shop (that I work gunshows for) I noticed a little piece of wood poking out from the corner of the shop. I asked what that was and the owner told me it was literally just traded into the shop. He told me it was a M44 Mosin and I was so excited. It was in great shape but when I looked at the year I saw it say 1942. I told the owner it’s not a 44 since it said 42. I told him it must be a M38 since it was a carbine before 43/44 and didn’t have the bayonet lug. He looked up m38’s online and agreed. He then priced the gun for $450 for me since I help work shows for him. It wasn’t until after I got home and had time to really look into the gun that I realized it wasn’t a m38. It was a 91/59 carbine. Neither of us had heard of it beforehand until after I bought it and learned of it. I scored a great deal on a pretty rare Mosin in great shape. Still had never seen a finish one anywhere and then the other day I posted something on FB about me cleaning my Mosin while watching some gun movies and a local FB friend living in the same town that I hadn’t met posted pics of his. He didn’t know anything about it except he thinks it was a Mosin and his grandfather brought it home as a war trophy. There it was a Finnish Mosin dated 1944. It was starting to rust and put a little bit from just being stored and never oiled or taken care of. I told him I would clean it and oil it for him if he ever wants to bring it by. That is such a cool piece of history to be handed down from your grandpa who served in ww2. Hoping he takes me up on my offer to clean it so I can finally see one in person.

That's a lucky score on a 91/59. Sounds to me like you & your new acquaintance with the Finnish rifle should go halves on a crate of ammo, & go to the range. Spend the day shooting both rifles, splitting up the ammo, learning how to clean your guns properly, & swapping stories. What have you got to lose, could be the start of a beautiful friendship. :)

I got a near mint condition 1942 M91/30 at Shots Fired in Covington Georgia for only $150 a few days ago. The bolt is smoother than any Mauser I've handled. I also got a 1944 M44 for Christmas that was Semi-Sporterized so I took the rail off it and now I need to buy an original bolt and see if a gunsmith can patch up the holes in the receiver and add wood back to the stock where bubba cut for his modified bolt handle.
@grantmo821
@grantmo821 4 ай бұрын
Adding wood back on to an altered stock can be tricky & pricey. There are a number of places you can get an original mil-spec replacement stock, as well as handguards, bolts, & any other parts/fittings you may need. If you replace the bolt, be sure to have the gunsmith check that the bolt headspace is correct & safe, very bad things can happen if it is not.

@qz2026
@qz2026 2 жыл бұрын
In 2013 you could get a refurb for $80. They were everywhere. You have to be careful with M-91's...A lot of them are junk. There used to be lots of non refurbished Mosins around and there still are. Many came out of Cugir, Romania and were imported by Century. Other's by the looks of the one you have were Spanish Civil War veterans. And, then every once in a while you will find an original, non refurbished Mosin 91/30 totally matching. These are pretty rare. America has always thought the Finn rifles were the best. M-91's, M91/30's, M-24's, M-27's, M-28's and M28-30's. The newer collectors have no idea the breath and quality of Finn Mosins that were are are still available. You've got a lot to learn about rarity. How rare are 91/59's with actions dating from 1920 through the 1930's? Pretty rare. You neglected the 91/38's as well. How rare is a 1941 Tula 91/30? There are a ton of things that talk to Mosin rarity and desirability. The one inch punch was made famous by Bruce Lee not Kill Bill. 😄 I just saw a Chat like your Finn M-91 that looked exactly like this one on GunBroker today. It even had the swivel on the magazine. Same rifle? BTW, this M-91 (the barrel and perhaps the receiver if it is matched) also was used by the Serbians - the "C" stamp which makes this gun more valuable. I noticed that this 91/59 is not in an original 91/59 stock. This one was put in an M-44 stock.

I got a 91/30 not to long ago as my first rifle thats not a muzzle loader. It was sporterized but not super intrusively, and I "desporterized" it. I'm thinking about sporterizing it again because all the mods aren't permanent and I can easily reverse the mods with no damage. I'm happy the previous owner didn't do anything crazy.

I bought a few back about 15 years ago. At the time, they were all cheep and at the shop I went to, they had stacks of boxes. So I did not open or want a open box. I wanted that thrill of the unknown. I do not regret it. I wanted fate to tell me a storie. Fate put the rifles in my hand. There were probably cleaner or nicer ones if I looked, but they all had issues and history, so nothing really lost. If you love history, then this is a fun way to do it.

at 48:43 I own a Vetterli-Carcano. They are able to be shot if you reload the ammo. In order to shoot them safely it takes a long bit. Basically you get PPU brass, then you get the primers and all that standard stuff. Buy cast bullets, they will be better for the gun. Make sure the bullet is .264 diameter, if it is the .268 Diameter bullets it will destroy your Vetterli-Carcano as the actual rifling is soldered in using a method called the Solerno Method. Next make sure you only have 18-20 grains of powder, basically half loading it. The Vetterli Action is meant for black powder. Some people replace the Smokeless with black powder. Expecting accuracy? No, you won't have it. Fun to shoot? Yes. I don't really take it shooting much, like maybe 15-20 rounds a year because these steps are kind of a pain and I have other rifles that are more capable, however it is a fun gun IF YOU DO THESE STEPS. IF YOU SHOOT FACTORY AMMO YOU WILL DESTROY IT. Not really for beginners. I would argue it is a great piece of World War 1 history as it shows the desperation of the Italians.

URSS was primarily used by the soviets themselves. It was a french abbreviation of the USSR acronym… which to their logic was the ‘international standard language’, in lieu of using English of course. French even was the language used in soviet passport as the international one, russian being the primary one

I'm still glad that I picked up 2 very nice 1940 ,and 1943 91-30's for 129$ each and also picked up 2 880 round crates of milsurp corrosive ammo thinking that will feed my rifles for life. At the time 440 rounds was 90$. All the soft point ppu ammo for hunting legally at a similar weight bullet isn't nearly as accurate as the milsurp stuff though. I get exceptional accuracy with both rifles, but the 1940 is definitely better made, and is my full time hunting rifle. With iron sights at 125 yards I can set up 20, 4 inch orange clay pigions at my range, and not miss one with 20 shots, so both rifles are definitely well under 4moa with milsurp canned ammo. I just kick myself for selling my Russian Ak47 a ton of magazines, my norinco Chinese sks, and a ruger 10 22 with 10 mags, and 1400 rounds of 7.62x39 ammo. I sold it all for 1,000$ all for iminant legal fees. Now worth nearbor over 5,000$. My Work friend I sold it all too said I could always buy them back anytime, so it made selling them easier for me ,but when I tried to buy one back, he wouldn't even answer my calls anymore. I sold them the month after Obamas Russian ,and Chinese embargo that made all these rifles 5x in value by now ,so I knew I was selling way way under value even then the AK alone was 1300$ , but thought he was serious about me buying them back. Now i just wish I had bought 20+ mosins when I had bought the 2. I like them alot ,and they are 5x in value now. I Like them even more though now because I hunt with mine and it's legal here. No semi autos. I have got 4 very big buck with that 1940 rifle so far. So I will forever keep it. I had a Winchester 30 30 that I started hunting with, and my 300 win mag that likes to scope bite , and nothing in between. I thought ok I will buy a .308 or 30.06 ,but when I realized I could buy 2 mosin rifles with enough ammo for life for less than just a single .308 rifle. Not to mention the 20 times more expensive ammo with near identical performance. I was sold, I got into mosins ,and now only wish I had a m44 ,or some type of carbine to also hunt with. Maybe one day.

@47:14 because URSS is spanish for Unión de Repúblicas Socialistas Soviéticas in english it would be like Union of Republic Socialist Soviet so you see why it doesnt make sense and because of the language in english its different and it would be rearanged to USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics)its the same thing but one its in spanish and the other in english,. So this leaves us with a couple of options. 1)Maybe the importer in certain cases probably being spanish or hispanic themselves, thats how they were used to spelling USSR so thats how they stamped it, meanwhile other importers being english speaking or knowing better went with the USSR version. 2) I dont know where they were supposed to stamp the rifles in accordance with the law but it could be the ones stamped URSS were probably stamped in spain and the ones stamped USSR were done upon arrival to US maybe? 3) If they were allowed to be stamped in Spain and not upon entry to US maybe some were stamped as URSS before realizing thats not how its written in US so they then changed it to USSR. 4) If they were allowed to be stamped in Spain and not upon entry to US maybe some importers knew better and some didn't so some stamped the right way and others the wrong way. 5) a combination of 3 and 4 6)If they were supposed to be stamped in US maybe someone didnt get the memo and stamped theirs URSS in spain to save $ and rather than making it hard on the importer it was allowed to come into the country. 5)If they were supposed to be stamped in US and due to some loophole in the rules where it didnt say the stamp had to be in accordance to the english language and any combination of 2,3,4 some importers might have again saved some $ and get it stamped in Spain and were allowed to pass. If u ask me I think the ones marked URSS were marked in Spain or at least by spanish speaking people somewhere.

bro you gotta watch kill bill, also thank you for all your content. i bought a mosin off a police officer- stock was refurbished and there was a tally on the stock.... i'm not sure i believe it but it is cool to have.... the phrase Донна is scratched onto the stock. maybe it was a russian guy trolling, or maybe it saw some shit. either way, it shoots great for a rifle made in 1942. i'll keep an eye out for mosins at local gun shows when they come around.

I have a 91/30 x sniper that was never engraved by customs and has brass bands not the black bands. What do you think the value is and would it up the value if I put an original pu scope and mount on it?I paid 175 for it about 12 years ago.

Excellent information, I just bought a 1943 Izhevsk Mosin with the bolt , Butt plate and magazine box electro- pensiled to match the roughly/crudely rounded receiver. Price tag $550. From what I read, this is a very undesirable characteristic for a collectable Mosin. Is this true? The rifle is very tight and looks perfectly aligned and from my observation seems very well put together. Thanks!

@BigSamMosinMuseum 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Alex, congrats on the purchase! Having electropenciled numbers doesn't make the gun undesirable at all, it is fairly common to see that with refurbished rifles. As for the crude/rough reciever, this is actually one of the things that gives the rifle charm. Each rifle made during this period is a little bit different, making it that much more unique. It is still a completely functional and reliable gun, even the sniper rifles from 1942 and 1943 can look rough and crude, but they still are very accurate!

I can't believe what you guys are willing to pay for these things. I bought a 1938 Ishevsk five years ago for $170 CDN ($130 US) and thought I paid a bit much, but it was in very good condition. I made it into a tough trunk gun with an ATI synthetic stock and a scout scope, and it will shoot 1.5 MOA with Barnaul ammo. Personally, I wouldn't pay more than $200 for ANY Mosin...they aren't particularly good rifles in any metric other than durability. That counterboring thing? Wouldn't look twice at a rifle butchered like that.

I have 4, 91/30s. All have been zeroed at 100 yards after intense cleaning. With 64 year old eyes and iron sights, each Mosin will hit a clay pigeon stuck about 1/4 of the way down in the sand so it will stand up 7 out of 10 times with "Silver Bear" Russian ammo (it is really great ammo). However, no matter what I have tried so far, I can not get the bore on any of them to shine. I feel they are clean and I can see the good riffling, but they still stay blackish. How do I get that bright shining bore out of my Mosins??
@BigSamMosinMuseum
@BigSamMosinMuseum 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ben, I would shoot at least 10 rounds quickly to heat up the barrel, then I would run a brass brush through the rifle back and forth at least 20 times while it is still warm. Then run some oiled patches down through it. I find the best method of cleaning to be simply repeating this process over and over, and have experienced good results doing this. If you are still unable to get the bore as "shiny" as you would like l, I wouldn't be worried about it. I would much rather have a gun that's hits on target than one with a shiny bore that shoots all over the place!

@@BigSamMosinMuseum Thank you. About a million years ago I was a Marine Rifleman so I am familiar with repeated cleaning! So folks have suggested, "copper wool" wrapped around a worn bore brush which I am going to try as well.

You talk about holes being drilled and other things to stay away but I feel that since my gun has a importer stamped on it it's ruined period so anything done to it shouldn't really matter right?

Originals are are indeed pretty tough to find, about rare enough to belong in museums. Fortunately, very nice quality replicas have been made & sold for reasonable prices as well. In my book, it's much nicer to own a good replica you can put to practical use, without worrying about ruining a rare original.

Mine is a carbine, I always used Norma 180 sp. However, they cut the powder back. I contacted them and was told it was because of so many of the old imports they were cutting back to protect owners of less than top quality rifles. I am considering Sellier and Belliot soft point. I think they are faster and more muzzle energy. I Received mine in 1969 or 1970 and have taken whitetails, a mulie, and an elk. All with one " shot and drop". Love mine, it has several stories stored in its magazine, if you can find one that can hit close within 200-300 yds using iron sights, trust me, it may be destructible, however it will take alot of abuse, this is one of the top 5 "Pickup truck" rifles. Get to know it, try Sellier and Belliot sp or Norma soft point , or reload the brass. I can go on and on about this rifle, and yes right now I am looking for another carbine in my price range, the one mom and dad gave me will probably go to my grandson, it doesn't get used very much, so I need some for granddaughters. OK, My new truck rifle. Enjoy your Moisen Nagant, shoot it a couple of times for me.

Skip the 91/30 rifles. Too big, ungainly, reminds me of civil war photos where the gun was almost as tall as the soldiers. They are good guns, robust, reliable, built like tanks. Stick with the carbine models( m38/m44/m91/59..all are carbines, I have 2. Compact, tough, handy and make a practical truck or camping rifle.
