@@johndee759 "Well almost no one has jumped to the conclusion that Ohtani was the one doing the gambling like so many in the US have. They knew that just didn't sound like him. As for sentiment toward Ippei, it's been a mixture of sheer amazement at his audacity, sympathy for what seems to be a very bad gambling addiction, and some anger at tarnishing Ohtani's good name. Japanese society is generally pretty lenient toward people who indulged in sinful pleasures because there's sort of this understanding and acceptance that humans are weak." ~ Japanese Reddit poster

It is highly unlikely that Shohei Ohtani was unaware of a wire transfer originating from his account to settle a gambling debt, given the standard financial protocols requiring explicit consent for such transactions. While it remains uncertain whether Ohtani personally engaged in gambling, the linkage of his account to a payment made to an illicit bookmaker in California strongly suggests a violation of gambling laws, irrespective of his knowledge or intent. The obligation now lies with Ohtani to transparently address this issue. The assertion that the funds were misappropriated appears highly questionable. Had the debt not been satisfied via wire transfer, one might concede to the possibility of theft. However, the execution of a wire transfer implies a degree of authorization that makes the theft narrative highly implausible, as wire transfers typically require multiple levels of verification and consent. Moreover, the Los Angeles Dodgers' decision to defer a substantial portion of Ohtani's compensation, ostensibly to circumvent California's tax regulations, indicates a level of financial oversight by the team that extends to Ohtani's personal finances. This level of financial oversight by the Dodgers raises questions about their potential knowledge or complicity in the alleged gambling activities.

I have a feeling there's some truth to the original story it's likely Ohtani may have tried to cover the payment for Mizuhara who was a long term friend and I assume Mizuhara tricked Ohtani on the reason for needing the money. However, because sports betting is illegal in California which it's likely Ohtani had no clue about it once the lawyers heard this the story had to change from covered friends' debts to my money was stolen by Mizuhara. Either way Mizuhara really screwing his friend Ohtani over. Mizuhara is definitely going down and after he serves some time and then go through rehab. I really hope Ohtani is protected he is a once in a century talent.

after the recent update, i feel like ippei first tried to protect himself by saying shohei was paying off for him on tuesday’s interview but then after the meeting on the opener (which was the very first time when shohei was aware about this situation and he first realized that his money ($4.5M) was stolen [that’s what the updated article said]), he failed to do that because andrew friedman said “shohei was paying debt off for ippei” in front of everybody, including shohei and now shohei is aware of it so i’m assuming ippei just gave up to protect himself and ended up betraying basically everyone

That’s the thing. He would have known the consequences. So, if Ohtani was gambling, he wouldn’t do it in a way that’s just out there like this with bank wires. He doesn’t need to get on credit. Dude could have bet in cash on hand. If you were committing a crime, you always do it carefully. This all just seems so bizarre that it’s more probable that ippei is the gambler and with ippei being Ohtani’s personal assistant, he had access to the money.
