🌹 Annette O'Toole gives the much deserved flowers to Christopher Reaves for his portrayal of Superman on and off set, along with other roles he’s portrayed throughout his career.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Annette O'Toole (Smallville, Virgin River) joins us this week to share iconic stories from her decades of work alongside Hollywood legends and all the while how her naivety prevented her from being taken advantage of throughout her early career. Annette goes on to tell a crazy story of her travels back and forth across the country during 9/11 and how it inevitably led to her winning an Academy Award. We also talk about her relationship with Michael McKean, enjoying acting now more than ever, and the special impact Smallville has had on people’s lives.

The scene where he is waiting for lois and without saying a word removes his glasses , adjusts his posture and he becomes superman wearing clarks clothes. Then Lois comes out, he shrinks back into clark and they go on there date.... Convincingly shows both identities without saying a word, HE was far and away better than every succesor.

I spent the day with Margot Kidder at comic con years ago after her signing we went to lunch then dinner with several of my friends. We talked maybe 5 hours to 6 hours. She told us that she was doing a lot of coke back then and was not very nice. She said she didn’t remember days or weeks at a time or just bits and pieces. She was taking downers to even out. So honest and lots of regrets. She said all her self worth and confidence was tied to her looks and once they were gone she took a long time to know who she was and a longer time to love herself. She was staying with a friend in San Diego so just got on the bus to come to comic con. Yes we drove her home.

Yes, it was an impactful movie, but I found it a bit disturbing. The ending felt like a deus ex machina ending -- a trite way of reversing the sheer tragedy of the story. (BTW, the woman Elise was based upon was actually a lesbian, lol.) More interesting is that the movie uses Rachmaninoff's music very effectively, and one of the women in the movie was Teresa Wright of the classic movie Best Years of Our Lives.

Margot Kidder was punished by the producers the Salkinds for siding with Richard Donner, the original director of 'Superman', who was working to complete 'Superman II' before he was unceremoniously fired by the producers & replaced with Lester. That is the sole reason why the Lois Lane character was essentially side-lined for Lana Lang. Gene Hackman also sided with Donner & refused to appear in 'Superman III', which is why Robert Vaughn was the main antagonist instead, in the same way that Marlon Brando was replaced with Susannah York for the Krypton flashback scenes in 'Superman II', as Brando sided with Donner as well & refused to appear in the sequel. Lester re-shot about 75% of the scenes filmed for 'Superman II' & brought a camp comedy element into the mix that didn't really suit the series. Richard Pryor was an ill-fit for 'Superman III' & unfortunately his presence determined the film's tone. But it does feature the Superman Vs. Superman battle which might be Christopher Reeve's greatest moment in the role. And the horrific cyborg transformation of Annie Ross in the climax was hands down the scariest moment in any Superman movie! It's still better than 'Superman IV' & 'Superman Returns'. Was a nice homage when they brought Annette O'Toole into the 'Smallville' TV series as Martha Kent, and more recently Helen Slater in the 'Supergirl' series as Eliza Danvers.

To be fair to Richard Lester, the Salkinds were the ones that wanted the camp comedy. The Salkinds wanted Superman to be a campy movie series similar to the Adam West Batman show. Richard Donner envisioned a grand epic fantasy tale similar to Greek stories and having a grand Heroes Journey. Reeves always liked working with both Lester and Donner. I always got the impression that Lester was merely just doing a job by the Salkinds and often got unfair blame for the short comings.

It's such a shame Donner did not continue. His take was exactly right at the right time. Superman is a metaphor for America, and after the dark cynical period of the late 60s/early 70s, it was films like Rocky, Star Wars, Grease, and Superman: The Movie that celebrated American traditions, wholesomeness, virtue and individual heroism. IMO, that trend peaked in the mid-80s with Top Gun, before slowly devolving into woke cynicism again.

@@danieldickson8591 Cavill, while handsome and a good Actor, is pure nightmare fuel to me in the role. Never once feel that special paternal safety that Reeve just effortlessly imbued. Reeve would descend and gently part clouds bringing soothing Sunshine ~ While Cavill swooped in with aggressively bleak brewing thunderstorms scooped up under his cape. Just nothing but foreboding, impeding doom and chaos. Nothing Super to be seen. I weep(as a Fan) for the Kids who never got to bathe in Christopher's magnetic light during their formative years. @@Cyborganna I know that is the complaint about Cavill, and I believe Cavill himself said he wished he could do a film more reflective of his predecessors. He's a big fan of the originals. It's the script/WB that made his Superman that way which is sad. He definitely could have pulled off a more softer and heartfelt Superman. You can see glimpses of it here and there in his movies but it's so overshadowed by them making him act as a weapon more than a man.

You know what makes Reeve's performance so great? It's because he understands what makes the character work. He understood why people don't recognize Clark Kent as Superman. He played the role as two separate characters. While other characters have a "secret identity", with Superman, Clark Kent IS his secret identity. He plays the part of Kent as a lanky, naive and clumsy geek who looks as threatening as a butter knife, but as soon as he removes the glasses, he straightens up, lowers the voice and becomes a God-like figure. THAT is why Reeve will ALWAYS be the DEFINITIVE Superman!

"Evil Superman" and the junkyard scene is a sheer stroke of genius that was sorely misunderstood by audiences at the time. It was too clever for its own good. The scene was a fight "within" Superman; within his psyche. It's all very Jungian. While the synthetic kryptonite didn't kill Superman it did make him "sick"; it lowered his inhibitions and revealed the suppressed side of Kal-El's personality. Notice that it was Kent, all meek, clean-cut and raised on the farm, that came out to confront the "evil Superman". Two projections of Superman's psyche. This movie was filmed in the midst of a "just say no to drugs" backdrop as well. You could also argue that the junkyard fight was an addicted Superman that was trying to get clean. The clean Clark won. A movie well ahead of its time. It's one of my favourite Superman movies.

I have heard story after story about what a wonderful and kind man he was. We don’t have a lot of actors like that nowadays but they are there. The tabloids don’t cover the kindness of people as well as their darker sides. That’s why hearing these stories from people that actually worked with them are good to hear. It confirms what we hope them to be.

Christopher really went all in on the the character and u can see it in his performance from what I have heard about Superman 3 it had to be totally rewritten cause Christopher had issues with the original script cause of what they wanted Superman to do with supergirl he seemed to understand Superman really well even though decision that were made throughout the whole franchise

Annette O'Toole was a total babe back in her prime so I'm not at all surprised Christopher was extra helpful and courteous towards her, but then again Chris always seemed like he is that type of person who cares about others.

Tom Welling was a great Clark Kent as he never officially donned the monicker of Superman until he defeated Darkseid. Rosenbaum though? My generations definitive Lex Luthor. Will say, love the modern DCEU, but comparing Rosenbaum to Eisenberg is like comparing beautifully polished apples to crack cocaine.

I know this is gonna sound weird, Eisenberg was weird to me. It didn't make sense, it's like there was a piece missing. Then in justice league, they put him in the gene Hackman-esque suit and it all made sense. Aside from Rosenbaum, lex always had a bit of flamboyance in his style (Hackman, spacey, eisenberg) and after seeing him come full circle, I'd love to see him again being full lex.
@mr.b4444
@mr.b4444 Жыл бұрын
I'm in my mid 60's and have seen all the movies and TV series. Rosenbaum is the best Lex by a country mile. None of the other actors came even close but some of that is they also portray Lex as kind of goofy. As for Eisenberg, he sucks. I love the Man of Steel movie and feel it is the best portrayal of superman with the exception of Eisenberg.

Superman III has the best version of Clark Kent, and if you could edit the corniness out of that movie, there's actually a really good movie hidden in there that's based around Clark and Lana. Also, Reeve was at his biggest and most "mountainous" in that movie.
