What we do to keep our bees growing.

When most people think of beekeeping, they think of honeybees producing honey. But did you know that there are other important roles bees play? In this video, we show how beekeepers work with almond growers to make sure that honeybees are brought in for pollination. During this time they need to be carefully taken care of despite the abundance of natural resources. It's a fascinating process!

Jose, I'm a beekeeper in Magalia, just east of Chico in the foothills. I have 6 hives at my house, 2 in Chico at the moment(usually 6, had 4 die out last fall) and 2 at my sisters house in Chico. I got her husband interested in a hive at their house a couple of years ago. He bought one of his own last year.I think he's got the bug.I really enjoy watching your videos. Thanks for sharing.

Hey there, Christian. unfortunately, we are getting nailed by atmospheric rivers one after another this was just before the first storms rolled in. we are praying that we are able to get to Arby’s sooner than later, because they are explosive the first warm day I know that we may lose some of them into the trees swarming 😕

Jose, you do okay on your videos(ha ha), but that Max is a real treat. I love how involved he gets in your operation and videos and knows exactly what's going on at such a young age. Good luck getting that young man to want anything other than being outdoors with his dad for years to come. Can he be in charge of picking my queens from you guys when they're ready?

One nice thing about putting pollen patties on them during almonds, it balances out their diet some plus the excess food is there if they need it. Seems logical to me Jose, I like how you think.🤔 😁Thank you for another great video.👍

Yes DC, beekeeping doesn't have to be to complicated. Decide what you need from the bees and plan out the game plan. Then execute it

Thanks for these videos. My son and I are trying to make the jump to commercial beekeeping. we have 40+ hives and want to grow significantly this year. our hives are in the almonds this year and all this crazy weather has made us nervous. Thanks for showing that its not all doom and gloom as others want everyone to think.

Jose I’m super happy to find your videos. I’m a beekeeper out of Utah and a group of us send our bees to pollination with Ken Smith. They are all in Williams this year. We watch your videos to get an idea of how things are going there. It’s a rough year and the weather hasn’t helped but we are hopeful that some of our hives look as nice as yours. Well done and thanks for the videos.

Hello David! What a small world😃, Ken and I have known each other for year's! Great guy right there. Happy to hear our videos gives you an insight of what is going on with your bees in that area. Things have shifted fast since that video and we hope that the major systems have came and gone. There was some areas in multiple orchards that experienced floors dng and bees under water. Praying not yours, Ken is great about being proactive so I'm sure if there was any “concerning” areas he would move them onto pallets or higher ground. I will ll be heading down Friday or Saturday to work our bees👍 Video coming soon

It was interesting to hear how you take frames from one colony to another to help a weaker colony that isn't thriving...When you do this is there any issues with them not getting along with the new colony? Cool video, enjoyed seeing your setup and the different gear! 👍

We equalize so that we don't lose any from swarming and also helps the hives that are slightly behind the explosive ones. We do NOT swap frames with bees. We shake off the bees into it's original hive and just transfer the brood or larvae. Thanks for watching Wes

Im new to your channel, great videos man! Im a newbie, so I apologize for my question’s; why are there different size hives stacked? Ive seen the top hive is sometimes smaller than the bottom when I drive by almond orchards (I live in the Central Valley)

To add bees, why not add a box, then checker board between the two boxes into three boxes?

Great question. We take these steps because we shake bulk bees from our colonies. Having 3 supers spreads the bees out and we don't get the poundage we need in the box we pull to shake. We also don't want to come back out to have to pull boxes to make everything square for when the bees get pulled out of the orchard.
