1. Music is the closest we have to a "time machine". Mentally anyway. 2. Music therapy has been proven to help ease the symptoms of depression & loneliness. Like a vitamin B12 shot for energy & improving ones mood. 3. Music was banned in Iran in the late 70's & 80's b/c it "stimulates the brain and influences independent thought" 4. Following a musical trend, genre or specific band creates a tribe or community which helps with socializing.

I love music because it has given me so many great memories. From growing up in the 80s and discovering music from family, the radio and friends. As I always say it would take me three lifetimes to discover and appreciate all this music. There is so always the hunt for that group that you missed out on growing up. I also love live music. My 2024 is packed with concerts.

Music is a wonderful way to connect generations. Growing up with my grandparents, I listened to a lot of really old songs -- 1930s to 1950s music in various genres. Then as a teenager in the '80s and early '90s, I listened to radio stations that played a lot of songs from the 60s and 70s. As I've taught piano for the past 18 years, I talk to my students about what they listen to as well. So through music I'm able to find some common area of interest with everyone from toddlers to the elderly by talking about nursery rhymes, Disney songs, folk, country, pop, etc. Music brings everyone together in a positive way!

I started buying in 1984. For me, 1983-1985 are the peak of music. I got Michael Jackson 'Thriller' & Quiet Riot 'Metal Health' on cassette for Christmas 1983 - then the 'Footloose' Soundtrack, 'Ghostbusters' Soundtrack, Huey Lewis & the News 'Sports" & Cyndi Lauper's 'She's So Unusual' on cassette for my 6th grade graduation & 12th birthday in June 1984. I used some of my graduation money to buy a dual cassette boom box and some to buy Prince''s 'Purple Rain' and Twisted Sister's 'Stay Hungry' on cassette later that summer, a few months year later at the suggestion of my uncle I started buying vinyl & making a cassette copy for the boom box - my first vinyl records were Madonna's first two albums (I also bought Quiet Riot's Q.R. III on cassette that day), Billy Joel 'An Innocent Man', Bruce Springsteen's 'Born in the USA' & Chicago '17', Twisted Sister 'Come Out & Play' (with the iconic pop-up sleeve of Dee coming out of the manhole) & the Springsteen Live 75-85 Box Set & 'Tunnel of Love' but I was still mostly buying cassettes (Metallica, Def Leppard, GNR, Blue Murder, Winger, Living Color, Warrant, etc.)... My first CD's were 'Badlands' first album & LA Guns 'Cocked & Loaded' which I had picked out and got with my first CD player for Christmas in 1989 and my Aunt & Uncle also got me Genesis 'Invisible Touch' & Rolling Stones 'Tattoo You'.... the first CD I bought at a store with my own money was Jimi Hendrix 'Smash Hits' because I heard and loved the cover of 'Purple Haze' on the first Winger album (which I had on cassette).... retroactively I wish I had skipped CD's & cassettes altogether and gotten everything on vinyl instead... June of 1990 I got my first car which had an 8 track player so I used to go to garage sales where they were basically giving away 8 tracks like they give away CDs and DVDs now just to get rid of them.

I definitely agree that music shapes who we are! I used to be a huge fan of pop music, but I listened to a lot of love songs and breakup songs, which made me very depressed. I made the switch to rock music in 2018/2019 and I've been much happier since then. Rock music, in my opinion, represents unity, confidence, and embracing your differences! Also, I was going to mention this in your last video with Anthony, but I forgot. I wanted to say that I love The Black Crowes' 'Lions' album in the background, which is highly underrated in the band's catalog! I freaking love "Lickin,'" "Lay It All On Me," "Come On," "No Use Lying," "Midnight From the Inside Out," "Cypress Tree," and "Greasy Grass River."

I think music should be taught in ALL schools from a very early age, I guarantee the world would be a better place for it. Because of music and because of The Beatles channel on Sirius/XM, a few years ago I decided to pick up a guitar at age 45 and try and teach myself guitar. The Beatles were always a band that I liked, but after hearing more deep cuts and solo stuff, they’ve become my favorite band. Their music is reason I’m still learning how to play the guitar and their music has gotten me into discovering more music that I hadn’t listened to before.

I mean I'm almost in tears when I hear you guys talking about the way it was, the real way to collect and love music. Anthony made a beautiful point when he said that back then, you couldn't wait for the new album by a certain band to come out. I remember so well going to Capers Corner, it was a record store in our neighborhood. It was owned by Ben Asner, (actor Ed Asner's brother). It was fabulous, it was such a joy to go and look for the new albums by bands we loved, look for new stuff. I often brought music just by looking at the cover. The first Roxy Music album is a prime example. The point is it was a time of constant discovery. Now, as Brendon pointed out, it's stream 30 seconds then move on to the next one, never mind listening to an entire album, God forbid! Anyway, keep up the good fight. I love these videos; you guys are a joy.

I just stopped in at sound exchange yesterday Friday after being in the area to pick up an awesome JVC boombox from 1978. I spent about two hours in the store so much to look for but everything well organized. I ended up getting six new compact disc. Five used. Got two free with the deal of buy three used CDs get two free. Got some hard to find new CDs. I always buy physical media. CDs cassettes Records. Never much for streaming music except for checking out a band that I don’t know much about and Then I usually end up buying the CD if I like the band

I need to add, we should NOT crap on younger people for not listening to music the way we do. It's not their fault, OUR generation created the technology (cell phones, computers, internet, spotify, tik tok, etc) OUR generation gave our kids these tech devices & websites. We are at fault. It would be like blaming black people for slavery.

You made a valid point about the second play through. I believe the same way. Now there are clear signs it’s not for you and it’s understandable. I had a few that I couldn’t understand why I liked and now love. Anything new we’re going to be on the fence about. A lot pf people just don’t put the time into it. It’s the time too, even if you set a side time for music go explore a little.

When I was younger I didn’t even care what the songs were about. I still don’t care what the song is about. If it’s good and it hits my ear, I’ll enjoy the heck out of it. People who only look for meaning in songs, in my opinion are not really music fans. Where’s the fun in that? Looking for meaning is the only reason why you listen to music? Don’t be one of those. Do I want to know the meaning behind songs? Only if I can get something out of it. Sorry ranting. But what I love about music is “The Way It Makes Me Feel!” And yes i can do music by myself but having a community like this one where I can put stuff out in the comments here is great fun. I love music because it's always there for me. It helps me understand the world around me, through the stories being told. It brings back memories good and bad. But, what I love most about music is that it connects ppl... Like you guys mentioned, in various ways. I've met so many ppl over the last couple of decades because of Pearl Jam and following them on tour. That instant connection in the GA line or at the actual concert, or if you're sporting some merch... It's a rather unique experience. Keep up the great work, you two. Lots of great points: 1. Totally agree that streaming has really made it easier for people to be into a large variety of genres and bands - we're not as 'locked in' financially with our investments on albums, clothing, etc, regarding how we show our sub-culture to the world, we can easily be massive of fans of Taylor Swift, Husker Du, and Miles Davis all at the same time. Regarding how we can simply to be invested when we stream, I'm totally the same - looking at my RYM list, there's so many releases I figure I can write a review for or have an opinion on after a handful of listens, even an album I might give a 3.5 or a 4 could be one I might never hear again, simply because it was in a list that doesn't stay anywhere and there's no 'memento' no keep me at it. 2. Don't be a dick! Forever and always! 3. On the discussion of music that's there for me and tells me what I need to hear, Less Than Jake has been that band for me, specifically stuff from Borders and Boundaries, Anthem, and the Call to Arms EP 4. I Also LOVE how we can listen to the same thing, but hear something different- that makes life interesting and makes us the people we are!

I love complaining about the younger generation as much as the next guy but then I remember when I was a teenager the old farts were saying the exact same things about my generation back in the 90s. A common refrain was “Kids today are all disrespectful young punks with their long hair and grunge music, they don’t know what good music is” As soon as you start complaining about the younger generation then you have officially become an old fart.

I myself try to see the glass half-full instead of half-empty. I saw the Record Store videos where you said (via captions) "Ted (Nugent) before politics = good Ted." Imo, that should apply to ANY music artist, regardless of their political affiliation. I lost complete interest in Nugent, Springsteen, Mellencamp, Fogerty, U2, Fleetwood Mac, Green Day, etc. after they got overly political. And I just plain stay clear of ANY music that is Tom Morrello-involved (I cannot stand the guy.) I get that a lot of people dislike Donald Trump, but comparing him to Hitler is 100% absurd, especially when the facts are misrepresented without real proof. As POTUS 45, the man tried his damnedest to put an end to human/child trafficking. I cannot see that being a bad thing. And that's why I have NO interest in buying music from ANY music artist that gets hardcore political. Survivor guitarist Frankie Sullivan said it best when he said "music and politics do not and shall not go hand in hand." Even the late great Edward Van Halen referred to politics as "poison" to music. AC/DC apparently doesn't like politics in music, either. Those are the types of music artists whose music I'll buy without hesitation.
@BrendonSnyder
@BrendonSnyder 6 ай бұрын
You say you don’t like politics in music but then you just tried to give me a run down on Trump. That’s what I dislike about any of this. If you like Trump that’s fine, but don’t try to explain it to me. And I won’t try to explain why I’m not into the guy. Let’s leave politics out of everything. For me I’m ok if the message is obscured and doesn’t hit me over the head. But bands that try and shove it down my throat I don’t get into. I still like Ted’s music, I just can’t listen to the guy in an interview today because politics always creep in. For me music is an escape and I don’t need reality in my music. I get enough from the news. 😂
@davej.meister5421
@davej.meister5421 6 ай бұрын
@@BrendonSnyder To clarify further - that wasn't my initial point. Believe it or not, I am 100% neutral politically. I totally dislike politics in music. I hate politics. Period. I only brought (Trump) up as an example. I don't even care for the guy. Not trying to get personal or political here. And I want you to know this straight up. Ted did this likewise with politicians he didn't like (most notably Obama,) and that was also wrong. Just saying that NO POTUS (regardless of political party) should be compared to that of a murderous monster like Hitler. We ALL live in the greatest country in the world. And these musicians who drag in politics are ruining music for many people, myself included. Therefore, I've no desire to support their music. I'll stick with the nonpolitical artists like the ones I mentioned. And I'll just leave it at that. Nothing more to be said.
