Yo, one question because I never got into the inner mechanics of this clusterfuck of a code: how would negative-durability items actually behave if you didn't convert them into unbreakables?

I was the original user who created the "Stardust" pickaxe. I made the -22k durability item at a gold farm at a base called "Empire's Edge" in 2017 during the spigot bug. I was a developer so I knew that getting the durability to -32k would flip it to the positive values to make the damage value go to +32k. So I tried and tried, but the bug got patched as I was making it and it only got to -22k. If I had kept going, stardust would have been the first unbreakable item in 2b2t history all the way back in 2017. I don't play the server anymore, but I am very glad to see that a pickaxe that was first created in 2016 and made negative in 2017 is still around today.

Unbreakables are truly missed. They were incredibly useful while they were around. I still remember receiving mine from UFO. It helped us out tremendously during the construction of the spawnmason logo as well. Great video as per usual Vincent. The cinematography is S-Tier. I think if unbreakables came back, we’d see increased productivity as a whole, and travel would be much easier. It’s a huge pain having to repair elytras every 10 minutes or so. Thanks for capturing this part of 2b’s history as eloquently as you did. :)

This is true imo notch was a bad programmer so he didnt know how to arrange the code good(atleast he fucked microsoft as they need to fix it)

As a programmer, I can tell you that non-spaghetti code would've acted similar. What's happening here is integer underflow. The durability is stored as a short, which can only store values between -32768 and 32767. When you attempt to store a value beyond this range, it wraps around: -32769 becomes 32767. By combining two items in a crafting table, their durabilities are added together. -20000 + -20000 = -40000, but that can't fit, so it underflows to a really high value - creating an item that seems unbreakable (but just has a stupidly high durability)

"Will unbreakables ever come back?" Maybe, In one of JackTheRippa streams he said "He have a friend that has player heads" once he heard that illegals are patched he didn't log on with his main account hoping for the plugin to go down" so maybe ppl with unbreakables did the same

no worries there are stashes of stacked unbreakables and 32ks in chunks that havent been loaded since the patch.

I remember getting a -152 neg durability max diamond kinos stacked helmet at the penny dropper by cape army in late 2017. I duped that thing so much but to this day I dont think many people have it. I never thought about combining it, however I wish I did

I accidentally duped all my kits with breakable armor with the chunk dupe, well jokes on me since they are all breakable now anyways

I remember getting my first unbreakables with the golden chestplate from a guy and duping them to use them at spawn. then the diamond chestplate got duped so i got hold of one and i mass duped my full diamond unbreakable kits in 2018. ahhhh memories.

I think I still have some negative durability items at a stash in the millions. I just gotta get there somehow. With no fast travel methods and me not really having lots of time for 2b2t, its incredibly hard to even get to that stash, as i have to walk there

I mean the Unbreakables were an unintended feature and although they were extremely useful the issue was that you had to pay or be part of a group to get them it makes sense to remove them because of that

Elytra patch idea: Close to breaking, lower the Lift-to-drag... Glide ratio from 8/1 to 4/1 or something else more or less human perceptible. And raise the elytra durability to compensate, to become a actual functional buff Elytras breaking midflight are no real and no good. No airplane does that... Combining that idea with faster access to region files on disk by the game would be ideal for big servers that rely on uptime, like any mc anarchy server. And fixing damage impact direction, and fixing light levels on big caves, and...
