So for starters bearings are rated in a scale known as ABEC, which is acronym for Annular Bearing Engineering Committee. To be honest you dont need anything higher than Abec 1 when using it for skating, the ratings are used to show how close the bearings are to their stated size. Unless you are using the bearing for high speed machinery under a lot pressure you dont need anything above ABEC 1. The price also tends to jump a lot more as you move up through the levels which are ABEC 1,3,5,7, and 9. The thing you need to look out for when buying new bearings is is the shielding (get rubber shielding its easier to clean), quality of materials (the harder the material the better) and the lube which makes a huge difference on your wheel spin (I suggest re lubing it with Bone Swiss Speed Cream ). The current ball bearing used in skates was created in the 18th century which is a 608 bearing and we still use it today lol. The 6 stands for ball bearings and the 08 stands for the size which almost every skate uses. If someone tells you they are faster because of a higher ABEC rating, its probably because they comparing it to their old ones that were worn, new bearings are always better! So in closing, cheaper bearings work just was well as the super expensive ones. Save your money and dont spend hundreds of dollars on bearings that work the same as the cheap ones. If you have anymore questions on bearings, wheels and ect dont be afraid to ask 🤙

@@jordanwilson9481 Hi Jordan! I’m a new skater. I bought Sure Grip skates, and the wheels that came of the skates are hybrid. It’s extremely hard to move and the skates and it feels like I’m jerking while I’m skating. What are your suggestions? Thanks,
@jordanwilson9481
@jordanwilson9481 3 жыл бұрын
@@HAPPYCHICMERRIAMCHAS the hybrid wheels that come with some of the sure grips are known to be more grippy/gummy wheels, then other stock wheels that come on different skates. I’m assuming it came with the sugar wheels? If so they have the classic shape of an indoor wheel but the are way softer which causes them to have more traction for our door riding. Depending on how you skate you might want slightly harder outdoor wheels that way your wheels aren’t grabbing to surface as much and it will be easier for you to do more flow style moves. Also soft wheels with tight plates can cause you to jerk around more try loosening them a little to see if that makes a difference and if that doesn’t work I suggest getting different wheels and save those for back ups. As for outdoor wheel recommendations really depends on your preference if you want stability or agility? Moxi gummies are a solid in between in my opinion Radar energy 62mm are good for agility and outdoors they are also a 1cm more narrow then the moxi gummies which gives you more lateral motion but because they are more narrow also make you a tad more unstable but good for dancing 💃 Atom pulses are also a really good choice because they have rounded edges which gives you more maneuverability so you can spins and other moves easier but they are pretty soft and can grip up here and there depending on the surface. Sonar zens are good too but they are 85a I think? which is a little bit harder if a wheel then some of the others I mentioned. Harder wheels give you better speed and maneuverability but you have to be more careful because you have less traction I personally prefer harder wheels but that’s because I do aggressive and urban in-line (rollerblading) in addition to quads jam skating. I hope this helped! 🤙🏽

i'm glad you talked about not going straight to hard wheels if you're a newbie! i've been in skateparks for a few months now but am still learning on my 78as because they're what i'm used to using everywhere else. i am sacrificing a bit of speed (tbh nothing noticeable compared to my friends who use hybrids) but going down ramps and pumping in bowls is not a problem because i'm still getting the basics and don't want heaps of speed yet. learning new skills on the wheels you're most comfortable with is definitely the way to go until you feel ready to grab a more appropriate durometer.

This is such a good comment! I'm a beginner and I mainly skate outdoors since there's not a lot of skateparks (and tbh it's scary af when you're just beginning) or space inside I could skate on and I've been skating with 85a hybrid wheels but I keep catching on small pebbles and falling, and the ride is not very smooth (the foot massage she talked about is real lmao). I ordered 78a's last week and a lot of people are discouraging this for beginners because they'll learn better on harder wheels? but tbh I'm so excited to get them and have a better time outdoors, I really don't care about less speed, and in my eyes less speed for me is better cause I'm not totally comfortable yet!

I just got my first pair of skates and had so much fun shaking in a parking garage at midnight with my music. Did not know the harder the wheels the more you feel the rocks and everything so I bet tomorrow when I go buy some hybrid wheels it’ll feel and be even better. I ice skated a lot being Canadian so once I realize I just transfer the skills I had from hockey and figure skating for balance and transferring of balance and how to turn is all about the same the only thing I can’t do good for my very first time is stopping that’s the only time I fell bc I kept hitting the skates together trying to do the plow stop and just have always had issues with a t stop even in skating. I can’t wait to watch more and feel even more informed

I was so lost in wheels topic! This helped me a lot. I bought roller skates for Roller Derby, because my goal was getting into a team and learn. Issue: I had to practice ourside, thin and hard wheels were dragging me out of trying to skate. I felt I was so dumb and that I lost all my groove. Then I went to a local Skateshop and the guy there guided me so much. And now I check your video. Thanks for explaining this! Some people just sell you the stuff and wash their hands.

I realize this is an older video but I’m going to try my luck at a response anyway. When I was a teen I went skating every weekend. I bought my own skates but my friend told me the wheels were crap so he gave me a set he wasn’t using. They were on the smaller side and white. I used them and never had any issues. Fast forward 30 years and I am now taking my kids skating and getting back into it. I’m going to get myself a set of skates as I don’t have the ones I had as a teen. After some research I believe the white wheels I had as a teen were sure-grip all American plus. I remember my friend making a big deal about them being made of vanathane. I’m currently looking at some rollerbones nitro 97a. If I was on the all Americans as a teen would these nitro’s feel too soft to me? The rental skates I have been using seem too soft and make me work too hard. It seems that the all Americans rate around 101a is there that much difference between a 97a and a 101a? Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Hey! I've only been skating for about 2 weeks but my current wheels are super soft and big. I learned in empty parking lots before going to the skatepark and the soft wheels turned out to be lovely because I could get enough grip to stop and speed up quickly.mine are very wide though so you might want to get thinner softer wheels depending on your preference c:
