Personally I'd go for Option C. Repurpose the current stadium for the Academy and Women and build a new stadium next to it. Option A + B would probably be the best of both worlds in terms of redevelopment and expansion, but this creates a logical problem which nobody seems to have mentioned- how feasible would it be to carry on playing at the current OT while redevelopment is done and if not where would we play in the mean time?

I’ve been a civil engineer for 15+ years. It doesn’t matter that those technologies exist to enable the building of the stand above the rail, the issue is with the daylight for the housing behind. I can promise there is no real solution that enables both parties to be fully happy. The only option for Man Utd to fulfil all its ‘wanted’ stadium ideals and criteria is with a new stadium. Don’t forget refurbing old Trafford just means that in 20/30 years you are asking the exact same questions of the design, if you build a brand new platform and infrastructure, new ground with fold away pitch etc you have an infinitely more upgradable stadium in 30 years time. Modern Stadium requirements have simply outgrown current stadium location, it is not suitable any more.

New stadiums are soulless. Old Trafford regeneration will basically be a completely new stadium that retains some of it. Of course it matters that those technologies exist. United can’t afford a 2BN stadium which is why they are trying to scav money from the tax payer

From what Sir Jim has already said he wants to build an entire new stadium that makes it among the best & biggest in the UK & I think further down the line it'll be far more profitable in terms of match day revenue & with entertainment complexes built in so that families can have a good day out aswell as watch football. Also our stadium could then host many events which will bring in revenue aswell. Old Trafford has been neglected for many many years it'll need alot more work than many think. Also building a new stadium plus having hotels on the grounds & all that tackle will help with the local area creates job oppertunities etc. Time will tell

Love the acoustics in that stadium - would love for the new Old Trafford to be that loud.

If Option A is feasible with the platform over the railway line, then 100% that's the option to choose. It'll be cheaper to build an extension over one stand than a full stadium. Also If the south stand mirrors the north stand + quadrants that will easily add 15,000 capacity, which means OT will hit the magic 90,000 capacity, whilst keeping with the heritage and character of the current stadium. It ticks all the boxes.

I think Man Utd need a new stadium.....which can be built to closely resemble OT. Large steep tiers, very close to the pitch. OT has several issues for a supposedly world class stadium 1. Very cramped seating-the legroom is TINY and seats narrow. Now you can just install wider plush seats but the depth of the rows is impossible to alter...And the legroom is a bigger issue than the seat width..This is a biggie. 2. The slopping roof. Looks great from the helicopter but not so great from the stands...It makes the ground very dark and even claustrophobic, esp if youre standing in the north stand uppermost tier... 3. The lack of huge concourses/restaurants, toilets, elevators etc. At least compared to modern grounds OT is lacking big time in those areas 4. The lack of corporate seating-luxury suites and outdooor business/club style seating....Man Utd could sell at least twice as many as it currently does.. 5. The quadrants on the inside look MESSY ....you know what i mean. 6. The exterior- good dont get me wrong but nowadays stadiums of world class clubs tend to look like spaceships-see Allianz, new Bernabeu...

If you want to reclaim the title of biggest football club in the world, you need to build something bigger and better than both the Camp Nou and the Bernabeu. It also needs to look wild. Forget keeping or copying the roof on the current stadium. You either build bigger, better and new or you don't bother. Of these options B is the best because it looks space age but I think the architects should be let off the leash and build something completely crazy. Something that's never been seen before. I know some fans are worried about tradition but remember, today's cutting edge is tomorrow's tradition.

Option C I’ve never been sentimental over bricks. Old Trafford has been rebuilt after WWII. It’s changed under the Martin Edwards/Gill redevelopments…. They’re essentially 100yo plus footings and infrastructure. If ur redeveloping the area then a New Stadium is a must. The design should incorporate the stylings, features and statues/memorial tunnel of the old. And when they reduce the old Trafford for use by the academy and women’s team I’d love It to look just like a mini OT of today… But a less sterile non bedpan 100k seater mega stadium is THE Statement of we’re back!

1:59 according to the tour guide in old Trafford when I was there 25 years ago he said It’s not because of the railway it’s because of the sunlight. The grass needs sunlight and a roof would block the majority of sunlight. So they can’t build on that section the stand. The Aviva (Landsdown road ) Dublin has a train going through the main stand. The Amsterdam Arena has a duel carriage way going under the stadium The opposite side was developed for Euro 96 and without the corners gave an additional capacity of 12,000 supporters. Each corner would give an additional 2500. So the capacity would grow to be 91000 making it “the Wembley of the north”

Let me start by saying I’ve never been to OT. I’m an overseas Red since 97. I’ve planned many times but life and circumstances caused changes (birth of kid, job change, pandemic). If feasible I lean toward option A. The look of OT is iconic and every football fan knows the stadium just by seeing it. Modernize the interior. Upgrade facilities. Increase capacity and build up the South Stand over the railway with a platform that allows easy access. If a new stadium is chosen I think they should keep the look of the roof structure. The white steel is just part of OT. I hate the bed pan and bowl looks.

I personally think a massive regeneration of the whole area is what will happen and i think it will take several years to get to that point. new stadium, hotels coffee shops apartments and retail units.. To become more commercially profitable you need attractions not just once a fortnight on matchday.

At present The Old Trafford Stadium is still incomplete & needs is an upgrade of the SBC stand & East & West quadrant to be completed first before you can sort out the roof. This Stadium has a lot of potential & can be one of the best stadium in Europe if not the world with the original design cos it has authentic & character with the potential capacity of at least 90K, all it needs is an refurbished & some TLC. Take Note: The Stadium Expansion Must Not Exceed the rail way track! Man Utd 's Old Trafford 'The Super Bowl of Stadiums known as 'The Theatre of Dreams' is unique & a Colossal of a stadium.

Sam, all of these options will lead to a significant ticket price hike. With a refurbishment, there's still going to be stuff that breaks because it's old. I think they will build a new one next to the current ground. That way, the cost is spread out and the team is in the ground earlier making the club money.

I love the idea of keeping the pitch and building a new stadium around that, but extending the south stand and replacing the roof isn’t enough if we are to be best in class. We need to sort out that drop off the pitch has since it was raised for undersoil heating - it’s a death trap. Hospitality and executive boxes need to be better (only for generating the income we need to pay for the work). We need better/decent tv screens and the seating needs to be better spaced as it’s too cramped in some sections. I love Old Trafford and still think it looks great - went in December and it’s had a fresh lick of paint, seats are being upgraded and still better than 80% of the stadiums in the PL, but we need to think of the next 50-100 years and match the standard of the tier 1 stadiums elsewhere in the world.

The extension on the North Stand gave 11,500 additional seats. Each quadrant added 4000 seats each, 8000 in total. Thats 19,500. If you replicate the same for the South Stand and quadrants you get a Capacity of 93,810. Todays official capacity is 74310. If you lifted the roof and add the same height as the South Stand all around the stadium you will end up with a capacity easily over 100 000. Only a new stadium makes sense. Expanding south stand to match east & west would only add a maximum of 10k seats. Adding those extra seats, whacking a new roof on, and a new facade, and tarting up the concourses would cost about £1b. There would be about 8 years of disruption where parts of the ground are shut down, or maybe the whole ground shut down. When finished increased revenues would cover financing with a bit to spare. A new state of the art 100k stadium would an extra 20k standard tickets plus 5k exec/premium. Cost £2b. Increased revenues would be 3 or 4 times any financing costs. The space where the old ground is, and around the new stadium (the "stadium district" part of the Trafford Wharfside project), could then be redeveloped into a fan park, bars, eating places, community stuff etc. A new mini stadium for the ladies & youth team can be built somewhere on the plot. None of this wider project can be done with the old stadium where it is. There's only one reason for just redeveloping the old stadium rather than a new stadium, and that's our emotional attachment to the place. The question is, is that emotional attachment to the old ground more important than all the advantages that a new stadium would bring to the club, the supporters, and the wider community? I'm glad I'm not making the decision.

This stadium becomes Man United's home stadium for a few years then the current Old Trafford gets knocked down except for the old tunnel. And a brand new 100,000+ seater stadium is built on the same site with the pitch in the exact same location. And as you said with a white steel roof. Mate that's an extra 24k seats making the stadium 98k, wow! There was also a plan to increase the N Stand to 34k by adding another stand in 2019 agreed with Trafford Council. That would take Old Trafford to a mammoth capacity of 106k. You won't be building a new stadium anywhere near that size, not chance.. Stand capacities are: West = 14,263 East = 13,307 North = 21,404 South = 9,433 NE quad = 5,603 NW quad = 5,501 SE quad = 2,050 SW quad = 2,288 Total = 73,846 The rest of the 75k+ capacity is exec boxes and hospitality suites. There is no way we would copy north stand over to south. The north stand is an abomination. South would be done to match east and west. That would add about 7k plus the quads, say another 7k. But you aren't going to copy over the poor legroom. There will be more hospitality spaces. Increased media spaces. More disabled spaces. At best you're looking at adding about 10k, taking capacity to about 85k.

@@creepingbrain That's just not correct is it? You look anywhere & the new quadrants alone added an extra 8k? You haven't got a clue how they can expand the South Stand neither, your just trying to knock the Idea because you want a rebuild.. & as for the N Stand, I sat in it for 15yrs & it was more than fine? Not a restricted view in the stand & the capacity is 25.5k everywhere I look?

My heart says A+B but the time frame, reduction in revenue and lack of suitable ground to play in while the works done makes it unlikely

From these options, I like the A option, just because I don’t like the design of B and A+B. As much as hate the idea of losing Old Trafford, which is bound to the history of this club, with the memories of every single moment of its history, I think SJR will more likely build a new stadium. That’s my feeling

First one is amazing. Keeps the character of the current stadium.

Retain SBC South as an historic connection. Listed status. Poss' retain pitch for a smaller stadium, so current OT would be partly retained. New OT 105k, best in world. Raised pedestrian walkway to Manc city centre to get 1,000's in/out. Call it the Red Walk.

Doing the south stand and increasing the capacity is the best short term solution, increase revenue and save money for modernisation later. Borrowing money with interest is going to cost more in the long-term.
