Cool videos on your page, I've got X5M E70 I'm planning on replacing the rod bearings as I do with any performance car I buy, I'm also thinking of replacing the main bearings in place while I'm that deep into the job one at a time of course maybe loosening all the caps slightly, question is have you ever replaced main bearings in situe I'm wondering would I be able to slide out the top bearings especially the thrust bearing in theory it could work any ideas and input would be cool

This is awsome. Great video man. Love these discussions. One thing I've always been lost on thoe. For example. M54 n55 s63 ect. What exactly is the number and letter representing about the engine. Same for chasis codes. For example e46. Does that mean example 46? Lol they like it so they produced it much like wd-40 (water displacement 40th test)

Early N55 used in E series had rod bearing issues but from what I've read since 2013 there was a revision where the N55 uses the same rod bearings as the S55 in the M3/M4. Is this true? Also, what are your thoughts on the B58? Apparently its the most reliable engine made by BMW in a while, hence why Toyota use them in the Supra.

Rod cap bolts can be reused as long as none of the threads are damaged. That is a new engine manufacturing practice. It’s more important that the person knows the correct torque procedure and sequence. Most people don’t torque then properly because they don’t quite understand torque and angle or clamping load.

greetings brother! Great job, thanks for sharing your knowledge! I can ask you a question, I have a 2012 BMW X6 M, S63 4.4 twin turbo gasoline engine. The block broke, I'm looking for a block to make the new engine. Several mechanics tell me that the N63 block is the same as the S63, is that true? if you can help me thanks 😎

N55 rod bearing not as common, most of the issue is oil starvation. For example replacing ofhg on N55, you need to prime the oil system, many don’t and then have rod bearing issues. There are n55s with over 200k+ miles and no rod bearing issues. Another reason is poor maintenance, not doing oil changes on time or using poor quality oil will damage rod bearings on the n55. N55 engines can go for 250-300k miles with original turbos.

Currently 130k on my N55 no issues runs perfect burns absolutely no oil whatsoever. At this point with the way I maintain it i know it will easily go over 200k and still run great.

Frequent oil and filter changes at 10k kms/ 7000miles would prevent alot of these issues. It all started with the optional 20k kms and 30k km intervals. Relatively high revving engines and old oil is not a good combo.

Also on a side note... I love how everyone blames the rod bearings on all these newer cars but ignores the elephant in the room. The biggest issue to even N54,N55 is failing leaking injectors. The fuel that leaks and goes past the cylinder walls and into the oil, thinning the viscosity of the oil is what I believe damages many of these newer DI engines. Some people have leaking injectors or old non index 12s and keep running the engines till they’ve done too much damage to go back. How many people do you know with injector problems running cars like that all because they don’t wanna fork out 1200+ on new sets. Unfortunately.... you gotta pay to play with any platform that has high HP even more when modding. Unfortunately.... some people still think these bmws are Hondas 🙄

It’s true, leaking injectors will wash down the cylinder walls and potentially turn new 5w-40 synthetic oil into 0w-20, which the nuclear hot s63 will eat up and burn in less than 300 miles. Get a set of Index 12s before anything.

If that was the case, no one would make it past 100-120k miles without locking up the engine. I don't hear of that many people replacing bearings; some do, sure, but its not 50% or more. @@yophilli You're telling me that nearly 18 years since the release of S85 engines, they're still new? I think you're also living in the past. BMW doesn't even make that engine anymore since production ended in 2010. N63TU3 is less than 2 years old now and 10 years from now they'll be over 12 years old and I'll definitely be on to something else newer. If you like to play with old engine, that's your prerogative. But to say that they're still new where BMW stopped producing them over 10 years ago is ridiculous.

You should be fine. The n63 cars from 2014 and up aren’t accually the n63. It’s the n63tu and it’s way better. Way more reliable. You’ll be fine. But I always recommend maintenance before performance. That means spark plugs injectors coils gaskets and that’s really it. And if you want any more reliably it’s always an option to replace the charge coolers. 🙂

What about someone that wants to buy one and has mechanics around him that, for a price, could help him work on it? I'm learning everything I can about the E60 M5. I get it's not the best engine, but most older cars need a lot of work anyway.

A lot of newer cars with these engines will not have the miles or these problems yet. As awareness of the cost and risk grows, surely their value past 50k miles will tank - they will be unsaleable. If I owned even a lower mileage N63 today I would be thinking about damage limitation - selling. BMW are not the only brand to have problems as legislation has forced them to be more and more complex. All this at a time when EVs are establishing themselves with decent range and much lower running costs.

Hi Nathan, would you mind sharing if these engineering issues with BMW engines are ones that are tuned or raced at a track ? I ask because if a BMW engine is maintained correctly and driven by soccer moms to the grocery store and STILL plagued by these issues then it’s more alarming. Alarming as in how on earth can a company the size of BMW with a long history engineer an engine that fails with normal use. Some of these engine issues are not acceptable. Meaning how were these engines not failing during their extreme testing that takes place in research and development before it goes into production ? It’s like the engineers were asleep. I understand that no matter what every manufacturer isn’t going to be able to build an engine that is always trouble free. Even Toyota has hiccups. However, it seems as if BMW is having many many issues. More so than other manufacturers.

Light Aircraft piston engine aviation requires oil change every 100 engine hours. Engine rebuild after 1000-2000 engine hours depending on engine recommendations. Think yourself when manufacturer sets oil change interval 10K miles. 30-50K miles - dead engine.

Never heard of rod bearing problems on N55, im part of an E70 X5 forum and even doing a search yields nothing. Thats not called a rod bearing problem thats people not using the correct oil or oil/maintenance problems in general from the owner. A REAL rod bearing problem is S65 and S85. N55 does not belong in the same category with those engines, the N55 is a reliable solid engine mine currently has 130k runs like it did when it was new and burns no oil.

@@zacm5834 5k miles seems to be the sweet spot for oil changes, atleast with the inline 6 engines that we have. I use Liqui Moly and the engine is a bit quieter and runs smoother with this oil i highly recommend it if you dont already use it.

I used to absolutely love all BMW’s . My E38 750iL is an absolute bulletproof ROCKET !! However, all the ones built after 2008 are usually 100k time bombs. Way too much plastic and bad engineering. I have a friend that I worked with at Corning Telecommunications (Dirk N. ) in Munich that left Corning during the draw-down of 2014 to go to work for BMW . He even told me to ABSOLUTELY STAY AWAY from any BMW’s from 2008 to 2016 . He described the short-cuts that they were taking to reduce all costs for manufacturing. He specifically told me that these cars are and at the time would be JUNK !!
