Yup, I suspected we fell right into Mephisto's plan. The final cinematic supports it, in my opinion. I remember when playing the ending, I was a bit disappointed that we got no final choice (since the game was leading up to us having one), but the more I considered it, the more clever stripping away our choice is.

I never got into Diablo, so I appreciate how clearly you explained the kind of world and struggles involved. Mephisto is a really cool character, I like how manipulative he is. And of course he chose the perfect form to infiltrate our hearts: pupper

mephisto is honestly my favorite of the 3 Prime Evils. Of all of them, he is easily the most insidious and calculating. Diablo and Baal are certainly just as powerful, but never in the way that Mephisto is. Plans within plans, a purveryor of hatred and corruption. The tool that is hatred for the spawn of hell so fervently used by the faithful is easily what makes them so manipulatable by the Lord of Hatred. Love this channel so much and all the lore breakdowns, makes my day everytime.

As someone who's been playing Diablo since the beginning, this was a SUPERB refresher on Mephisto, from his introduction in Diablo 2 through to the events of Diablo 4. It's easy to forget some of the details that has lead to this game, and you even taught me some new things. You've a great a attention to detail, and I look forward to more from you. Subscribed.

There's a manuscript in the horardric vault in diablo 4 that mentions the prime evils, each being known to take a deformed animal shape. One takes a one eyed owl, another takes a wingless bat, and the other takes a wounded wolf.

I was skeptical about watching this at first, but this was actually really good, and interesting. Mephisto is definitely the big bad of Act 5. Neyrelle is very weak by the last scene and the last that we see of her will probably be a soulstone in the stump of her arm. I think Mephisto intends to resurrect Lucian or possess his body, which means the whole story about him being thought out of existance is wrong or is not the whole truth. There is some indirect in game stuff that points towards this, and the end credits ends with an image of Lucian's skull. I don't think that is by mistake. Also, Lucian's demonic form was based in part on Fenris/Ifrit concepts from other art and lore.

“True evil never dies” reminded me of something a friend told me a long time ago… That good and evil are like energy and obey the same laws. You cannot create or destroy good or evil, just move it from one place to another. Children don’t hate, they learn it from their parents… racism wasn’t spontaneously created, it moved and evolved over time by being passed down and taught. But the same goes for good! You can spread good around and move it by doing good deeds! People remember acts of kindness and empathy will drive them to do the same and continue to spread good around to their environment. It’s a fun thought experiment when I think about all of the good and kind things I learned from my mom, and how with patience and education we can stop acts of hate and evil by spreading good. I know how cheesy and saccharine that sounds but I think it’s true. You’ll never put out a fire by throwing more fire at it… Anyway, I just thought I’d share and feed the algorithm a bit. Amazing video as usual and you’ve definitely gotten me more excited about an IP I knew nothing about! I’m going to play Diablo soon, so thanks! I probably wouldn’t have tried it otherwise!

Great video! And yeah I've heard a lot of criticism of Neyrelle in the community, that she's being easily manipulated by Mephisto, that we, the main character had no reason to give her the final choice and that always seemed weird to me. I completely agree with the reverse psychology hypothesis, Mephisto is way too chill for it not to be his desired outcome at that point. Hell, he chose us because he thinks we can defeat Lilith he says, not because we can trap her so it's weird that he's been arguing for the soulstone since we brought it up. But despite that, I think everyone's actions (including Neyrelle) makes sense and is the right choice. Maybe Neyrelle is being influenced and/or manipulated. But if she is, it's twice as likely that we were too so leaving the decision to us was an even worse idea. Especially since at that point Neyrelle has had almost no contact with Mephisto yet, just a few seconds with him and the fact that she's in his realm (but we are too and she has seemed the whole way to be the one who resisted the realm's influence the best out of our three companions). There also are hints of different solutions. The abyss trapped Lilith for quite some time for example, and could trap Mephisto now that the only place on Sanctuary where he has been defeated doesn't have his essence anymore (as Adria took it from there already) so Neyrelle's quest does make sense. In the end I think D4's ending is both what Mephisto wanted *and* the best ending for humanity. Sure it will probably lead to Mephisto's come back since that's the nature of the game, but I suspect we will learn and possible gain something new from it this time. That Neyrelle will fail, but that she won't fail *completely* and in fact the ultimate defeat of Mephisto in a future expansion might by thanks to what she did even though his return was also due to her choice.

You know, I think the part of the prophecy: "Then came a spear of light, piercing Hatred's heart, And he who was bound in chains was set free." Could have many meanings. The pervailing theory I've seen is that it is literally Lilith using Inarius' spear against him. Seems plausible, but Hatred with a capital H implies Mephisto's heart, not Inarius. Instead, perhaps, the "spear of light" might refer to the blue soulstone, piercing the bloody sack Mephisto is being reformed inside, freeing him from Hell. Edit: I base this on how it is written. Since, at least in my native tongue, the sentence or word/words between two commas is generally used to clarify a sentence but does not change its meaning. Hence "Then came a spear of light and he who was bound in chains was set free." is what we have without the clarifying sentence. 🤔 Either way, this was a great summary!

My Friends an I were talking about the implications when we finished the campaign. And something that isn't explicitly said, but the Evils only ever showed up on Sanctuary through "Avatars" D3 was the closest they got with Diablo becoming "Prime" but with the events of D4, that was the whole essence of Mephisto, is 'core' as it were. and now its been brought through the barrier that was put up eons ago to reduce the power of the Nephilim and demons on Sanctuary. He bypassed the gate essentially.

I'm gonna echo what some others have said - I kinda don't care what you talk about, Chalice; your storytelling and mellow yet not quite whispering voice makes anything you say worth listening to. You could read the phone book and I'd be hooked. I love listening to your videos just before or as I am going to sleep - makes it so easy, though I do have to go through your some videos several times to get the whole story due to falling asleep so quick :) Keep up the good work!

god the lore of diablo is so cool and i think mephisto is one of my favorite characters now. may it be that i find the humans in this game really annoying or may it be the vestiges of my edgy 13 year old self, but i think working together with mephisto to stop lilith and writing it in a way that we are the ones getting manipulated is really cool. it makes me wish that there was an ending where we team up with him intentionally and just claim all the power for ourselves or something of the sorts. anyways, you really nailed it once again. extra credit goes to the make up you did with those markings they look really unsettling. like you managed to do the carved-into-the-flesh-and-then-barely-healing look really convincingly.... they are just drawn onto the skin, right?

Of note as corroboration perhaps; the game still refers to itself as Fenris in crash reports and pop up dialogue boxes.

He’s in a soul stone meant for Lilith, and he knows to escape those already. I feel like he may try and take the player character as a host. Maybe use Neyrelle as bait for when the correct time comes. Right now, he’s where he wants to be, the furthest away from us, the wanderer who defeated Andariel, Duriel and Lilith, till he gains enough power. He hasn’t forgotten us, we are his biggest threat.
