There is actually so much to learn in this field and because it's the most subjective of the medical specialties it's critical to understand the science and apply these things to patient care, I appreciate you watching and spread the word about the channel

@@ShrinksInSneakers I'm 33 and still years away from medical school. With so much to learn I fear I will never be a great physician, or by the time I get to that level it will be time to retire. The amount of knowledge and experience needed is overwhelming, and I'm the type that wants to be the best I can be.

@@thebeatles9 I started the medical school journey much later as well. To my surprise there were people much older than me starting at the same time. I think if you are motivated and put everything into being a physicians it's possible to make it happen. Here we talk about very high level specialized knowledge in the area of psychiatry this is well beyond the medical school level. Best of luck with the journey it's hard but worth it in the end

I read studies years ago that correlated low blood plasma levels of cholesterol with both general suicide risk and postpartum depression. Is this potentially dietary?

My wife was diagnosed with postpartum depression and Psychosis however 7 years on her diagnosis is now Schizoaffective Disorder. She didn't appear to have any symptoms/a prodrome prior to pregnancy and so I'd love to hear more about links and relationships between postpartum psychiatric disorders and the onset of schizophrenia if there are any, would this be a common time for schizophrenia to present and be mistaken in this manner. Interestingly my wife doesn't experience delusions, her symptoms are focused around hallucinations and cognitive impairment along with psychogenic polydipsia.

In general the age of onset for schizophrenia for female patients is slightly older than males. I usually say 25-35 years of age for females. I would also look for a family history as schizophrenia is highly heritable and often runs in families indicating there might be predisposition. When I think about the postpartum period it's a very stressful time even for the most well adjusted individuals. Sleep depravation, chronic stress, constant round the clock care for the infant can all create a situation when a genetically vulnerable individual could develop a serious mental illness. There are also significant hormonal shifts that occur during this period which may contribute. The greatest correlation is with bipolar disorder but schizophrenia is also possible. Hope this helps, if you haven't subscribed please do and spread the word about the channel

@@ShrinksInSneakers Thank you and we are certainly subscribed, it was your piece on psychogenic polydipsia that lead to my wife's diagnosis of PP via endocrinology. Interestingly there is a lot of silence and denial around mental illness in her family. Her mother developed migraines, abdominal pains and visual disturbances ever since childbirth in her late twenties which fluctuate from weekly to monthly issues, these have been investigated and written off by migraine specialists, endocrinology, neurology as not explainable by there specialisms as they do not fit the standard models and there is no biological evidence for these issues. They encouraged psychiatry however she has been unwilling to go down this route, her doctor has given her sodium valproate in the last month which I think is an interesting choice and I believe has links to bipolar and schizophrenia. Have you done any videos on psychogenic pain etc which might relate, I've not seen them when scrolling? Keep up the great work 👍

@@user-ft8gr7vq5d no problem happy to help, I have not done any talks on psychogenic pain and somatic symptoms but they are common in psychiatry as are things like pseudo seizures.
