Christmas is around the corner! Grab the NordVPN Christmas deal now! Go to nordvpn.com/radicalliving to get a 73% discount on a 2-year plan + 1 FREE month on top!
Find out why Germans are CRAZY about Insurances, which ones are the most common ones, which insurances are mandatory and which not and if they make sense for you or not.
Germans don't stop at the health insurance, they want to get as many as they can afford, from liability insurance over household insurance
to life insurance.

Im an insurance agent in the USA. Insurance companies do not insure “Speculative” risks where you could gain or lose like in the scenario you just said. They only insure “pure” risks where you can only lose. I’m not sure if it’s the same in Germany but I’m guessing it is. Lol

I would say dental insurance is a good thing to have - a case that is not covered by the mandatory insurance will arise for sure sooner or later and the prices in this area are quite high. It may cost ~20 Eur/month but there is trick - most of them are covering cleaning twice a year, that is recommended to do anyway, so if you deduct the price of two cleanings per year from a yearly dental insurance price it will cost only several euros/month at the end.
@sarale3565
@sarale3565 2 жыл бұрын
Thats BS since i had one, did have a cleaning with they didnt pay cause my normal health insurance pays for 100 Euros cleaning a year anyhow and then when i had a 120 (later 60) Euros Bill they said they are not responsible for that since they only cover certain stuff.
@VladimirGarvardt

@flapanep

@@sarale3565 dental insurances are often complicated, probably to create many holes where insurance doesn't have to pay. But there are also some quite ok dental insurances which communicate clearly what kind of stuff will be covered. I got one because I knew I'll need an implant sooner or later and it literally saved me thousands.
@sarale3565
@sarale3565 2 жыл бұрын
@@VladimirGarvardt sure, it would cover it, but only if my normal health inssurance doesnt cover it. So the extra inssurance will cover up to 100 Euros each time. The normal inssurance up to 50 Euros each time. My bill for a professionell cleaning was 120 Euros. So i got a 50 Euros return and not a 100 Euros return since the first 2 cleanings go through my normal health inssurance and only the next 2 ones will go through the dental inssurance. Do you know anyone who does 4 dental cleaning a year? I dont and my dentist wont even do it. Its hard enough to even get an appointment. So i quit on the whole dental inssurance thing.

OK, I don't know what country we're dealing with here... If anything, one could require you to prove you ARE employed, which you would confirm with the contract you got from your employer etc. If you are unemployed, you could probably get some paper from the employment office, unless you're not registered as unemployed and you're just hanging around doing nothing, not receiving any benefits nor being required to actually apply for job sufficient numbers of time in order not to lose it, living in your parents' basement and having them pay for your living... Either way, this kind of place should be able to confirm your status in that respect. In Germany you get insurance (with freedom to choose whichever Gesetzliche Krankenkasse you want) by getting employed to begin with. You can also insure yourself privately but it's hella expensive and reportedly difficult to change afterwards.

I'm pretty critical of life insurance, too - with one possible exception. If you have to provide for a family and buy a home on a mortgage, get a barebone life insurance covering the mortgage in case you die. That can happen (did happen to a friend, aged 45) and then your widow and offspring won't need to worry about foreclosure. If you just take the basic one (no bells & whistles, no savings element) they will cost a few hundred €€ or $$ a year.. you'll just have to stop anyone trying to sell you a hybrid product with a savings element that can cost you ten times that.

From personal experience, I can tell everyone who commutes to work daily with a bicycle, e-bike, e-roller, e-scooter etc., even if it's just a 15-20 minute ride and doesn't even require driving on the streets: GET AN UNFALLVERSICHERUNG. You can be as responsible and careful as it gets, obey the law while riding, wear a helmet etc. but you're VERY VULNERABLE all the time you're out there on your vehicle. And you can never predict all the countless unpredictable and irresponsible behaviours of other cyclists, drivers, pedestrians, their children, their dogs, the thoughtlessness and or lack of reaction to your warnings of the elders or intoxicated party people while you approach them, the holes in the roads, the tram rails, drivers playing with their phones while driving or not using their blinkers when turning right in front of you, the obstacles lying across the road, joggers with music blasting in their earphones blocking the bicycle roads, and countless other threats present on your way, which might seem minor to others, but upon impact while you're driving or cycling, might cause severe physical damage or worse to you.
@notroll1279

If you commute to your work as an employee, the accident insurance paid for by your employee will cover you for that trip. So If the commute is nearly all the cycling you do, no need to buy additional insurance...problem solved.

I had a landlord that tried to charge extra for water once it reached the house, the lawyer found this in the nebenkosten. Also had a landlord that shut off the heating (which also heated the water) after 11pm every night and only put it back on again at 5pm. He didn't get a shit about legionaries disease. Because our insurances actually pay out money to the point that you dont have to pay a single thing as long as you are sick or injured. They also provide some good services on the side (assisting you in healthy living by paying your sportsmemberships in part and stuff like that). They also collectively negotiate prices with big pharma and hospitals and are able to push them to payable amounts. So that keeps costs overall way lower than yours. I can go into a pharmacy and buy stuff like Insulin or Epipens without going bankrupt and with a recipe from a doctor it would be for free.

When I was in the University back in the early nineties, I took two years of German. It was several years after the Berlin Wall fell in 89 and the Soviets pulled out of East Germany starting around 91 or 92. The two Germany's reunited then and it was a HUGE deal here in the USA. The former East German stasi was disbanded and I heard many former East Germans wanted stasi people prosecuted for political persecution. But the West German government decided not to do that, they decided to "let the Cold war go away." But I read after the Cold war ended and the stasi was disbanded one of the industries ex stasi members went into was the insurance industry in Germany. Why? Because insurance is by nature an industry well suited for people good at deceit, gathering information on people (statistics), making simple things complicated by design. Whether that is true I dont know but I read it more than once after East Germany reunited with West Germany.

You forgot all the really pointless insurances. Like on your phone you buy (or any product on amazon), on the package you send via the postal service and so on. I think in France it's similar. Just that you are likely having 2 insurances for healthcare (one mandatory, and one complimentary), also if you think Germans like to sue, then check out the French. So legal insurance might be worth the money there (but afaik you only need one). Ofc car needs to be insured as well, and they will freak out if you have an accident with a German car, because they will think it's not insured as it doesnt have the french insurance sticker at the window.

Is it actually illegal for a tree to go over the property line in Germany? I'm pretty sure in America that unless it's causing damage, the part of the tree that's over the line is just considered the property of the person whose yard it is intruding into.

You are responsible for taking care so it doesn't happen, so cut your trees 😉In general Germans don't like to be bothered by their neighbors, so also better don't make any sounds after 10 pm, don't produce any smeels etc.🙃 Also you are responsible to clear the snow on the sidewalk in front of your house. If someone hurts himself due to your fault (snow/ ice on the sidewalk) you have to pay for the damage, so better have a liability insurance 😉

It's not illegal - but there have been some pretty pointless lawsuits about whether the neighbour is entitled to saw off the overhanging branches or to any fruits growing on them. Neighbourhood quarrels often do end up in court - however, our "insurance specialist" here failed to mention that almost any insurance policy for legal expenses specifically excludes neighbourhood disputes and anything like libel or insult disputes - so most people enjoying their date in court will have to pay for themselves.

If you don’t pay into pension insurance, what do you do for old age? In Amerika it is called social security for old age. (So true pay and pay into insurance and when you want to use it, „sorry you’re sh*t out of luck, have a nice day“

In the US this is worse PLUS you have high deductibles & copays. All w/ paying your high monthly dies. Then if something happens, there is very little longterm support.

Having moved to Germany in late Sept 2021 from the US, mostly because of all of your Berlin videos, lol, I was very surprised at how litigious many locals told me that German society is, and how many insurances were recommended. One insurance you didn't mention that was highly recommended to us as apartment renters is "glass break insurance", which is separate from the apartment goods insurance. Break a glass table in your rented flat? Covered. Accidentally break the window glass in your apartment? It's covered! So bizarre...

I remember watching a German horror sci-fi movie about death insurance (basically if you don’t have the insurance they keep your dead body in a comatose state to harvest body parts or for artificial insemination). Now the movie makes even more sense given the German obsession with insurance

That insurance crazyness is just making me feel very unwelcome in Germany :D I'm really afraid of getting out from the house here (though I'm usually the person who likes to do that). Work remote, don't go from the house, don't speak to anyone and you minimise the risk of getting cases :D Nice video btw!
